Horace's Aid To Augustus In Reorganizing The National Religion, George E. Mistele

Bachelors’ Theses

The change from the democratic form of government of the Romans to the monarchy of the Caesars also brought with it a loosening of the religious bonds which had bound the people to the carrying out of their civic duties. Augustus, on ascending to the supreme power, saw at once the need of returning to the old religion which had been so powerful a factor in bringing about the rise of the republic. He determined to reorganize the Roman religion and selected Horace to aid him by presenting to the people in the pleasant guise of poetry, the virtues and …

Tertullian's Influence As A Man And A Writer On The Church, Mary Dominica Mullen

Bachelors’ Theses

Tertullian was born about the middle of the second century A. D., at Carthage, a great city with a great history* ’’Tyre in Africa,” is one of his favorite phrases for Carthage and her ’’sister cities,” and he quotes Virgil’s description of Dido’s town ’’studiis asperrima belli.”* But his Carthage was not that of Dido and Hannibal. It was the refounded city of Julius Caesar, now itself two hundred years old - a place with a character of its own, familiar to the reader of St. Augustine’s Confessions - a character confirmed by the references of Tertullian to its amusements …

Sporogenesis In Botrichium Virginianum Swartz, Lewis Abel Stocking Jun 1928

Sporogenesis In Botrichium Virginianum Swartz, Lewis Abel Stocking

Bachelors’ Theses

The earliest resultful work done in Pteridophytes, very closely similar to Botrychium Virginianum Swartz, was the work of Goebel (1890) on the Ophioglossales. Bower (1890) followed Goebel in his work on the Ophioglossales. He completed a work in 1896, which according to Burlingame (1907), who also did valuable work on the Ophioglossales, is the most comprehensive and satisfactory that has thus far been done. This work had a stimulating effect upon the early study of Botrychium Virginianum Swartz because of the almost entirely similar histology of the two plants. Burlingame’s (1907) work in the Ophioglossales, was done in 1907. He …

The Anatomy Of The Honeybee, Carol M. Steib

Bachelors’ Theses

The honeybee has lived In a society under such complex laws and has executed such varied and difficult labors that it has attracted the attention of men and women from the very earliest of times. The Care Of Old Age In Wisconsin, Eugenia Leone Schmitz Jun 1928

The Care Of Old Age In Wisconsin, Eugenia Leone Schmitz

Bachelors’ Theses

With the changes and. advances made in the industrial system in the past hundred years caused by the rapid spread of the industrial revolution and the growth of the modern factory system, we find the question and problem of the care of the aged increasingly more difficult to solve than it was before this time. In the days of tribal life the aged were looked upon as men of wisdom; they were honored and were given first consideration for their comfort. In the days of the guild system, the old tradesman and artisan worked as long as he was able …

Mothers’ Pensions, Annette E. Schmidt Jun 1928

Mothers’ Pensions, Annette E. Schmidt

Bachelors’ Theses

Man gradually recedes from his primitive forefathers and in like proportion he recedes from his barbaric days. With this recession as the centuries passed man adopted a kindlier and more humane attitude toward his fellow man; he no longer hanged his neighbor for stealing a kerchief, nor placed him in stocks for public ridicule. Man has come to realize that other men are also human beings with the same tendencies and emotions. The equality of man was definitely expressed in the Declaration of Independence, "That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable …

Interesting Phases In The Development Of Early American Journalism, Audrey Louise Schumaker

Bachelors’ Theses

Journalism is the business of writing. It includes many classes of writing, but more particularly the writing of news and events, the history of each day. The Journalist is primarily a historian, and it is upon his ability to recognize news and record it faithfully that his career depends. For this reason the history of journalism is a history of peoples, and of nations, and of human interests. Journalism in the American colonies, and later in the States of the Union was definitely a part of the government and society of the day, and it is in this light that …

A Study Of The Electric Current Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, Simon Sander Share

Bachelors’ Theses

The property of offering greater electrical resistance to a current when flowing in one direction than when flowing in the opposite direction possessed by some metallic salts in contact under pressure with certain metals is of interest both from a purely scientific viewpoint and from a commercial viewpoint. The phenomenon is of interest to the scientist because it has not yet been properly explained and because a suitable explanation might lead to a better understanding of what actually occurs at the contact surfaces of a metal and a salt and also of the condition of metallic surfaces. The property has …

The Development Of Character Education, Evelyn M. Shaughnessy

Bachelors’ Theses

All down through the Christian years of Civilization the ultimate end of all education has been the production of men and women of character and high ideals. The Turkish Nationalist movement which triumphed at Lausanne in 1922, like other historical events, had its roots extending back into the past. Romanticism In Wordsworth According To The Preface In The Second Edition Of The Lyrical Ballads, Raymond Felix Michalak

Bachelors’ Theses

To offer a thorough exposition of Romanticism in Wordsworth, as the nature of this topic justly demands, would be aspiring to loftier heights then anyone it apt to realize, for the genius of Wordsworth, sheltered in a garb of the pious tranquility of his life, as we shall later see, presents a multitude of equally varied and extensive aspects under which it could be duly considered. An endeavor shall be made, however, to Submit an essay, though not exhaustive in its contents, which still shall give a sufficient idea to fully appreciate the magnitude of his literary abilities as a …

The Histrionic In Dickens, Mary Josephine Markey Jun 1928

The Histrionic In Dickens, Mary Josephine Markey

Bachelors’ Theses

We shall examine the life and works of Charles Dickens to find if he really was histrionically inclined. Of course it will be impossible in a work of this kind to consider all the author’s works but we shall look for passages, scenes and characters which could lend themselves to the stage.

Spelling In The Upper Grades, Anna Helen Tabert Jun 1928

Spelling In The Upper Grades, Anna Helen Tabert

Bachelors’ Theses

The English language because of its peculiar development from many sources, presents unusual spelling difficulties. The early and various contributions of the Angles, Saxons, Danes, Northmen, Normans, French, Celts, and Latins, are further confused by our continual practice of borrowing words from foreign languages. To alleviate these difficulties some attempts have been made at spelling reform.

Plot And Character In The Shavian Drama, Arthur Alan Gilbert Jun 1928

Plot And Character In The Shavian Drama, Arthur Alan Gilbert

Bachelors’ Theses

George Bernard Shaw, as is always the case with people who are unconventional and who broach new doctrines, has become something of a storm-center about which his exponents and opponents rage. Few authors have during their lifetime created the sensation he has done unabatedly since 1890. In his report before the censorship committee which was examining into his plays, he defined what he was doing. "I am not any ordinary playwright in ordinary practice. I am a specialist in immoral and heretical plays."

Some Social Forces In The Drama Of John Galsworthy, Richard Paul Loftus Jun 1928

Some Social Forces In The Drama Of John Galsworthy, Richard Paul Loftus

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the singular custom of that modern playwright to feel most keenly the social problems of the society in which he lives. Truly the drama is a representation of life, but as we have come to know the great models that have survived the criticism of years, we notice that it has dealt most primarily with a representation of character that is a universal and living representation of life rather than with the problems of the political and social scientist. Yet we are aware that the stage of the present day is not that of a Sophocles or a …

Graphical Calculation And Computation, Alice Hudson Vallier Jun 1928

Graphical Calculation And Computation, Alice Hudson Vallier

Bachelors’ Theses

The word ’’graph” has lately become a part of the active vocabulary of the ordinarily educated person of today. We may say lately because even fifty years ago the use of the graph to represent data was limited to the knowledge of a few theorizing mathematicians and the miscellaneous disorganized usage of some practical mechanics, engineers, business men and statisticians. The situation is not that fifty years ago the rudiments of graphing were not identical with the bases of graphing data today, at least by such simple methods as are commonly employed in periodicals and newspapers for the enlightenment of …

Bachelors’ Theses

The fern gametophyte offers a large field for experimental work, not only in the reproductive processes but in the development of prothallia from the germination of the spore. The ordinary fern spore germinates on soil or in water. Prothallia, which have formed branched cells, have been found by a number of workers, and attempts have been made by some to explain the cause of the branching.

Cause: Our Idea Of Cause Has Objective Reality, Edward Kazimierz Latocha Jun 1928

Cause: Our Idea Of Cause Has Objective Reality, Edward Kazimierz Latocha

Bachelors’ Theses

If we are to know things about us, there must be reasons for them. We must be able to answer the question, why is it? Our answer to this question will give us the sufficient reason for the thing. Taking for granted that things about us can be and are known, we arrive at the self evident principle that everything that is, has a sufficient reason for its being. Since reality comprises the possible and the actual beings, there must be reasons for the possibility of the possible and reasons for the existence of the actual. The reason for the …

A Study Of The Temperature Behavior Of Various Liquids When Subjected To Pressures Ranging Between One And One Hundred Pounds Absolute, Jerome John Van De Kamp Jun 1928

A Study Of The Temperature Behavior Of Various Liquids When Subjected To Pressures Ranging Between One And One Hundred Pounds Absolute, Jerome John Van De Kamp

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is submitted as a partial requirement for the degree of bachelor of science. The problem is one which dates back as far as the science which claims its authorship. It is a problem of which very little is known and one is justified in calling this old problem a youthful one, youthful, of course, in the sense that it is immature and as yet undeveloped. The problem by the very fact that it is in its infancy makes it one of Infinite length. It is a problem which has no greater practical application. Its ultimate value extends into …

Gerstaecker's Novels Dealing With America, Dorathy Spangenberg Jun 1928

Gerstaecker's Novels Dealing With America, Dorathy Spangenberg

Bachelors’ Theses

During the first half of the eighteenth century, the new world received scant attention in the German literary field. Germans had been emigrating from time to time, but undoubtedly because of the difficulties involved in traveling, and the great distance between the two countries, there was little or no contact.

Solubility Of Different Waxes In Various Solvents, Sol Leslie Spracker Jun 1928

Solubility Of Different Waxes In Various Solvents, Sol Leslie Spracker

The waxes are esters formed by the union of fatty acids and alcohols not belonging to the glycerol series. Hence waxes are sharply distinguished from fats in that they contain no glycerol; they have howe er, many properties in common with true glycerides (fats); thus they can be saponified with alkalies, the salts of fatty acids and alcohols being obtained.

The Relative Insignificance Of The Child In Roman Literature As Compared With Greek, Francis Joseph Lukes Jun 1928

The Relative Insignificance Of The Child In Roman Literature As Compared With Greek, Francis Joseph Lukes

Bachelors’ Theses

The pity which certain tragic characters inspire in the breasts of the audience has its source not only in the situations in which the poet places them, and in the sentiments which they express; often it results also from their sex and from their age. A woman who is the victim of cruel circumstance or who has fallen prey to some moral frailty will. arouse far more pity on the stage than would a man in a similar condition; and this is true simply because she is a woman. A child which is threatened by some great danger or is …

Bret Harte: Dicken's Influence On Him; His Contribution To The American Short Story, Anne Marie Lucie Jun 1928

Bret Harte: Dicken's Influence On Him; His Contribution To The American Short Story, Anne Marie Lucie

Bachelors’ Theses

Bret Harte is not a lonely figure in our literature, but he is a unique one. His fame is identical with the nation's memory of early California, and it came about as the most natural thing in the world. Everybody's imagination had been fired by the California gold era and the field had been untouched by romancers; his material was timely to the moment. Dickens had just visited America and the fame of him and his work had penetrated very household; then had come the news of his death, and enormous space had been given to him in all the …
