A Course Study For Two Years Of Woodwork In Class "B" And "C" High Schools Of Kansas, Wayne C. Jacka

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

It is the writer’s purpose to build a course of study that will be of value to the schools offering woodwork. At the present time there are only a few instructors who are using the State Course of Study and about fifty percent who are using no course of study at all. The rest are using courses of study of their own make, and the most of these are unwritten. This course of study will be built around the text books now being used and the equipment available in these schools so as to be of the greatest value to …

Some Applications Of The Principles Of Isomorphism And Variation To The Teaching Of Geometry, Ralph Mock Nov 1938

Some Applications Of The Principles Of Isomorphism And Variation To The Teaching Of Geometry, Ralph Mock

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In summary, it should be stressed that the numerous examples of this paper are important only in so much as they illustrate the use of the devices and concepts emphasized in the study. It is our premise that plane geometry, as usually taught, does not possess the value which it might have. Certain changes in content as well as in presentation would materially improve the course. This study, then, presents suggestions for improving the ordinary course in two directions. First, by presenting logical propositions from the students' experiences which are partially isomorphic to the theorems of plane geometry, it is …

The Administration Of The Finances Of Extra-Curricular Activities In High Schools Of North Central Kansas, Martin H. Isaacson Sep 1938

The Administration Of The Finances Of Extra-Curricular Activities In High Schools Of North Central Kansas, Martin H. Isaacson

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

School administrators and the public in general are realizing the important place that extra-curricular activities have in the modern high school. Witness for example the large number of discussions and the many articles written on various phases of this subject. A steadily growing appreciation of their value as a means of training pupils in the practical arts of citizenship is among the factors which account for this conviction. It is natural for the high school boy or girl to be interested in the organization and management of extra-curricular activities. Under such conditions there is splendid opportunity for developing desirable character …

The Organization Of Content For Agricultural Teaching In Western Kansas High Schools, Leo Virgil Wedel Sep 1938

The Organization Of Content For Agricultural Teaching In Western Kansas High Schools, Leo Virgil Wedel

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The specific problem of this investigation pertains to, “The Organization of Content for Agricultural Teaching in Western Kansas High Schools." The study deals with the course of instruction in all high schools in the western half of the state teaching agriculture, except those teaching vocational agriculture. Schools teaching vocational agriculture are organized under the Smith-Hughes law. A school teaching agriculture organized under this law has a definitely prescribed course of study which does not apply to non-vocational schools. Thus, the necessity for the organization of a course of study for this latter type of school. This is a course that …

The Spinal Nerves And Spinal Cord Of The Frog, Laverne A. Penn Sep 1938

The Spinal Nerves And Spinal Cord Of The Frog, Laverne A. Penn

Bachelors’ Theses

The common grass frog, Rana pipiens as wall as the bull frog, Rana catesbiana have served during many decades as material from which both the student of zoology and the investigator in biological problems have gathered valuable information about the anatomy and physiology of the common systems. Among these systems the central, peripheral, and sympathetic nervous system plays a coordinating role, because of the ramifying nature of its organization. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate the gross and histological structure of these branches known as spinal nerves. When one inspects the literature on the nervous system of …

Rural Life In The Depression, Immanuel Kondos Sep 1938

Rural Life In The Depression, Immanuel Kondos

Bachelors’ Theses

How has the depression affected the non-economic or social phases of rural life? Has the shook to our economic organization produced shifts in the social organization of the country life which will be permanent? If so, what are these changes and what social research may be necessary to obtain a better knowledge of their significance from contemporary sources of information which may not be available later? If it is possible to recognize the significant tendencies in social change and to obtain sufficient knowledge concerning them, it may be possible to bring influence against those trends which are undesirable and to …

Health Conditions In My Community In The Rio Grande Valley, Beatrice E. Allen Aug 1938

Health Conditions In My Community In The Rio Grande Valley, Beatrice E. Allen

All Theses

Healthy living is one of the important factors which seriously attempts to make knowledge a basis for action and to focus the discussion up on such practical conduct of life as will conduce to the maintainance of a maximum of personal vigor and to an alert cooperation in all community movements for the protection of the public health. Health education should be positive not negative in emphasis. It should stress the splendor of health, not the fear of disease, and it should avoid morbid medical details. It should be practical and concrete. It should—all of it—focus on conduct of life, …

A Suggestive Program Of Community Recreation In Ballinger, Texas, Fannie Mae Barnes Aug 1938

A Suggestive Program Of Community Recreation In Ballinger, Texas, Fannie Mae Barnes

All Theses

To serve as a basis for further developing a well-rounded program of community recreation. There has been no definite program of community recreation in Bailinger. The equipment necessary for carrying out a balanced program is inadequate. The leader needs the knowledge of human understanding. Cooley, an authority in sociological thought, makes this a paramount essential. Only as a leader understands, can he hope to serve as a symbol, for then the followers feel that he is in sympathy with them, and they are ready to tender him their trust. The leader should be cheerful, even-tempered, sociable considerate, tactful fair, strict …

The Value Of A Program Of Health Habits In The Rockdale High School Milam County, Rockdale, Texas, Eva L. Ledbetter Aug 1938

The Value Of A Program Of Health Habits In The Rockdale High School Milam County, Rockdale, Texas, Eva L. Ledbetter

All Theses

The concern and interest which school officials show in the health of the child are comparatively new things. It was once thought that schools were for the purpose of giving the child mental training. Health was regarded as a function of the home only.1

Modern trends in school practice are toward the development of the child in all its aspects. This of course includes the health habits of the child as well as his mental, moral and social dealings.

The modern school is similar to a laboratory and everything done in this laboratory is done for the benefit of …

Public School Music In The Negro Public Schools In The Beaumont Area, Mary Lillian Starks Aug 1938

Public School Music In The Negro Public Schools In The Beaumont Area, Mary Lillian Starks

All Theses

"The aim of music in the Public Schools - Public School Music has suffered from misapprehension on the part of the general public, and most teachers, of its aims and possibilities. Music has been looked upon as an accomplishment for the talented, and study has been confined to those who displayed unusual ability, or taste in that direction. This is no more reasonable than to say that because a child does not show evidences of becoming a great mathematician, he should not study mathematics. It is not the aim of Public School Music to turn out musicians but to open …

A Study Of The Viscosity Of Gelatines, Mary Anthony Keller Aug 1938

A Study Of The Viscosity Of Gelatines, Mary Anthony Keller

Bachelors’ Theses

Only a casual perusal of the literature treating of enzymes impresses one with the importance of the subject. How could the process of digestion be carried on without the action of enzymes? The tanning industry is primarily concerned with so-called bates, which are enzymes. Other industrial ope.rations, such as brewing, the manufacture of glue, petroleum refining, the production of rubber and starch, are likewise largely dependent on enzymatic action. Another phase of enzyme activity turns to the prevention of disease and medical diagnosis.

Substrates are of no less importance. The present work is not so much a study of -enzymatic …

The Positivism Of Auguste Comte, Michael J. Czernecki Aug 1938

The Positivism Of Auguste Comte, Michael J. Czernecki

Bachelors’ Theses

A man lives according to the philosophy of life he holds. There have been many philosophers of prominence that have been studied, read and quoted but few were as interesting as Comte. By his great diligence and thinking, Comte was driven to a mental unbalance but he recuperated to finish his work on a social reconstruction of the days after the French Revolution. He had a great idea, if it would only have worked out, but alas, his basic hypothesis was wrong and he had no verification for his opinions.

The title that was selected was done so with the …

The Teaching Of Language In The Primary Department At Hebert School, Beaumont, Texas, Thelma Prater Smith Aug 1938

The Teaching Of Language In The Primary Department At Hebert School, Beaumont, Texas, Thelma Prater Smith

All Theses

All studies contribute to the enrichment and mastery of language, and in turn language study strengthens a child's power in every study. There is no other subject which so thoroughly identifies itself with all studies as language. This is seen in the close connection between thought and language. From early infancy, words and thoughts are so closely combined in a child's mind that he does not descriminate at first between an object and its name. From the very first, words became so intimate with thoughts that through-out life the two are inseparable.

This ever presence of language in all studies …

Education, A Factor In Character Building At Central High School, Galveston, Texas, Olga K. Thomas Lucas Aug 1938

Education, A Factor In Character Building At Central High School, Galveston, Texas, Olga K. Thomas Lucas

All Theses

It requires no more than a superficial acquaintance with the educational situations today to realize that the mastery of a textbook no longer constitutes the chief end of school education. The text is being transformed into a means for realizing more fundamental objectives. Emphasis in school has shifted from knowledge as book learning to information and activities as instruments in the formation of character traits.

Professor Bobbitt1 insists that education is to prepare men and women for the activities of every kind which make up well rounded adult life. Professors Bode and Dewey insist that society is in a …

Vitalizing The Teaching Of History In The Public Schools Of Waco, Ola V. E. Bartlett Aug 1938

Vitalizing The Teaching Of History In The Public Schools Of Waco, Ola V. E. Bartlett

All Theses

In the past, history has been almost solely a treatise on the other worlds of which the students have only vague conceptions, while being in ignorance of their own surroundings. Every student should be familiar with the history of his own country, state and community.

Teachers of history are committed by their own logic to a study of the experiences of other teachers. Believing as they do believe that the past of humanity in general is of value to humanity in general, they are scarcely in a position to deny that the past of history is of service to teachers …

Correlating And Integrating Subject Matter In The Booker T. Washington High School, Dallas, Texas, E. J. Johnson Williams

All Theses

In selecting for this study the Booker T. Washington High School, Dallas, Texas, it is not the writer's intention to compare the work being done in this school with other schools of equal rank. An effort is being made to describe the actual work being done in this school in the matter of subject correlation end integration. A Proposed Program For A Parent-Teacher Association And Its Value To The Rosenwald Number One Elementary School, Huntsville, Texas, Esther H. Bridges

All Theses

For four years, the organization of a Parent- Teacher Association in the Rosenwald number I. Elementary school has been a challenging problem to me. I constantly meet with friends. They tell me how their Parent-Teacher Associations are solving, for school and community, numerous problems which are urgent and vital to the welfare of their pupils.

Each year we attempt to organize a Parent-Teacher Association. But, we are never successful. Still, in the midst of continuous failure, I can see the growing need for Parent-Teacher co-operation in the Rosenwald No. I. Elementary School District. And, I am determined to plan a …

A Study Of The Living Expenditures Of Ten Negro Farm Families In Washington County, Texas, Jewel Mae Lockett Aug 1938

A Study Of The Living Expenditures Of Ten Negro Farm Families In Washington County, Texas, Jewel Mae Lockett

All Theses

Although it is agreed that many of the most difficult and disturbing problems of family living are related to family expenditures, yet there is perhaps less serious careful study given to the distribution of money for living expenditures than almost any other phase of homemaking. If a balanced budget was kept at all times some of the problems of this situation would be eliminated. This situation, however, is not surprising; many homemakers are so completely occupied with the responsibility of clothing, feeding, and otherwise providing for the physical welfare of their families that these matters which can be pushed aside …

A Reading Set-Up For Elementary Reading In Faulkner Colored School, Margaret Mae Ellen Mcfrazier

All Theses

All science, all history, and all literature are for the scholar. To he successful in either, depends largely upon reading, the basic tool of learning. Then, if so great a colossus as learning has for its foundation reading, much consideration should be given to it from early childhood until the adolescent period when an interest and love for good literature should be developed. Reading when stripped of its mechanical defects, lends case and skill In exploiting books, magazines and newspapers. The boy or girl, who understands easily the subject matter read, carries the key to the world's library and finds …
