The Use And Improvement Of Class Methods For Beginning School Band Instruction, Alfred P. Sessions

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is the (1) study of the band class methods in use, (2) a discussion of their effectiveness, (3) an original attempt to show how many of the problems of band methods can be solved.

It should be noted that a class of instrumental students may be a group of several or all different kinds of band instruments together. This study, however, will be concerned mainly with group instruction which combines all of the band instruments together. The term "method" as used herein designates a book of music material for class instruction in all band instruments. …

A Survey Of Band Practice Incentives And Rehearsal Techniques In California Central Coast Counties High Schools, Earl Marshall Alcorn Jan 1940

A Survey Of Band Practice Incentives And Rehearsal Techniques In California Central Coast Counties High Schools, Earl Marshall Alcorn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the most difficult problems for students of the teaching profession is that of formulating the best classroom procedure to follow under actual teaching conditions. Almost universally, young teachers find that the transition between their graduate period of training and their first position involves such a realignment of ideas in this regard as to be highly discouraging.

In their graduate study these prospective teachers learn many practices which are helpful to the problem, but which many times are based on an ideal situation, or one so nearly so as to be foreign to the immediate picture. In music, for …

A Study Of The Deviations Of Voice Articulation And Rhythm Of The Students Of The Stockton Junior College, Andrew W. Shook

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Th purpose of this study is to discover to interpret the nature and the extent of the deviations of voice, articulation, and rhythm of those students who were enrolled as regular students in the Stockton Junior College during the school year ending in June of 1939. Such deviations presumably reflect the speech needs of these individuals. The interpretation of such discoveries should, in a concrete and graphic manner, show not only the speech needs of those individuals tested, but also the general tendencies of any similar group of students of Junior College level in this location. However, the specific task …

The Vocascope - An Experimental Study In The Visual Measurement Of Pitch And Quality, John C. Crabbe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The project herein described is an experimental attempt to con- struct visual aids for the study of voice. Sunset Over Lincoln, Gordon Clouser Oct 1939

Sunset Over Lincoln, Gordon Clouser

English Language and Literature ETDs

In writing this play, I have tried to avoid the emphasis usually placed upon Billy the Kid. Most of the books and articles on the Lincoln County War have dealt extensively ( and without too great a regard for the truth) with his exploits, and there seemed little to be gained in re-telling the story from the same old angle. It appeared to me that a far more promising field was the one offered by the Spanish-American element in Lincoln and the effect of the war upon them: hence the decision to make Ygenic Salazar my pivotal figure.

Attitude Toward English Culture In Irish Literature, Sister Rita Cascia Smith Oct 1939

Attitude Toward English Culture In Irish Literature, Sister Rita Cascia Smith

English Language and Literature ETDs

A consideration of the attitude toward English culture in Irish literature necessitates an understanding of the conflict of the two cultures: the conflict of the Anglo-Saxon race with an Irish race; the conflict of a Protestant culture with a Catholic culture. A critical appreciation of this conflict covers eight centuries with scarcely a suspension of twenty-four hours, may be gained by taking a dispassionate view of history of both countries; by realizing what both have achieved; and speculating intelligently on their future.

Balthasar Hubmaier, James Hardwood Barnett Iii Oct 1939

Balthasar Hubmaier, James Hardwood Barnett Iii

Honors Theses

Balthasar Hubmaier stands as one of the great unknowns of the Reformation. Only in the Baptist annals is he treated to any extent. Perhaps the reason lies in the fact that the Anabaptists were very much in the minority throughout the Reformation. They never had even a city which might be called Baptist, much less a nation. To be sure a great number of them lived at Waldshut for a while and then at Nikolsburg under the protection of some Moravian lords. But this happy state did not last long. Perchance, it is because of this that C.J.H. Hayes in …

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

In view of the current interest in the elimination of pupils from the public schools, the question arises, can the schools justify themselves in seeking to hold the pupils longer. In a close search for some authoritative statements an overwhelming amount of theory was found, but almost nothing of really concrete import.

A Study Of The Variations In The Growth Of Blue Grama Grass From Seed Produced In Various Sections Of The Great Plains Region, Andrew Riegel Aug 1939

A Study Of The Variations In The Growth Of Blue Grama Grass From Seed Produced In Various Sections Of The Great Plains Region, Andrew Riegel

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

During the past 7 years the Great Plains Region, with its "dust bowl", has been the scene of unparalleled activity in the fields of range management and erosion control. The people of this short grass area are extremely conscious of the need for a sound, practical program of conservation that will revegetate the wasted pasture and cultivated land, which will aid materially in preserving the eroding soil. Many problems have arisen as the program of conserving the soil and the vegetation has progressed.

The Additional Responsibility Of The School And Character Development, Virginia Lorene Stanley Aug 1939

The Additional Responsibility Of The School And Character Development, Virginia Lorene Stanley

All Theses

Character is what we are. This statement often made is essentially true. Character is what we are. But whether we are of good character or had is oftimes beyond our Influence. For a person is a composite result of heredity and environment. No one has been able yet to state the determined ratio between the two. But it Is known that it does exist. Since this is true there is only one thing for man to do if he desires to aid the child in building up good character. He can do nothing to the child's inheritance but he can …

A Proposed Program Of Vocational Guidance In The Schools Of Freestone County, Annie Mae Riles Aug 1939

A Proposed Program Of Vocational Guidance In The Schools Of Freestone County, Annie Mae Riles

All Theses

Vocational guidance is an educational service and as such should be considered an integral part of the educational program carried on by the recognized educational agency of the community. Growth of industry and great expansion of the number of possible callings ling ago rendered the choice of a vocation difficult. No social agency existed through which the individual might receive assistance, hence the school - somewhat tardily - assumed this function. Ways and mean have been devised to accumulate information about the various vocations and to put the individual in possession of a reasonable amount of this information so that …
