The Nature Of The Reactions Occurring In The Distillation Of Zinc From Its Ores And The Effect On The Speed Of These Reactions Due To Certain Variables, Robert Glenn Sickly, Charles Yancey Clayton
The Nature Of The Reactions Occurring In The Distillation Of Zinc From Its Ores And The Effect On The Speed Of These Reactions Due To Certain Variables, Robert Glenn Sickly, Charles Yancey Clayton
Bachelors Theses
"The reactions that occur in the metallurgy of zinc are in general well known as to the end results obtained. The zinc smelter desires a maximum recovery in a minimum time. There are certain factors that govern the fulfillment of this desire. The most important of these are TEMPERATURE, TIME, KIND OF REDUCTION MATERIAL, and THE NATURE OF THE ORE. There is much data available as to the temperatures at which these reactions go on and also there is obtainable some information as to the speed with which these reactions progress, particularly as to the length of time required for …
A Series Of Tests On The Condensation Of Zinc Vapor To Metallic Zinc, Frank W. Cody, John W. Greene
A Series Of Tests On The Condensation Of Zinc Vapor To Metallic Zinc, Frank W. Cody, John W. Greene
Bachelors Theses
"The purpose of this Thesis is to try to show the effect which certain variables, which are always present in practice, have upon the condensation of Zinc Vapors to Metallic Zinc. That these variables can and do play an important part in the Zinc Smelting Industry can be shown from the fact that all of the zinc obtained at the present time is won from ores by reducing the oxide of zinc to metallic zinc by means of carbon. This operation necessarily takes place at a temperature above the boiling point of zinc. This means that the zinc immediately on …
The Effect Of The Presence Of Certain Base Metals On The Ability Of Amalgams To Catch Gold And Silver, Ray Gould Knickerbocker
The Effect Of The Presence Of Certain Base Metals On The Ability Of Amalgams To Catch Gold And Silver, Ray Gould Knickerbocker
Bachelors Theses
"As a general proposition, the conditions that favor successful amalgamation, and the factors that work against the success of the operation are reasonably well known. We know that if mercury contains certain impurities it will not pick up gold and silver efficiently. We know that if the gold and silver are not in proper condition the mercury will not work as it should. We also know what some of these impurities are, and have some idea as to what condition the gold and silver should be in, but the exact data on these conditions and their effects are lacking. The …
The Effect Of Insoluble Sulphates On The Volumetric Determination Of Lead, Mervin Joe Kelly, Ralph Knappenberger
The Effect Of Insoluble Sulphates On The Volumetric Determination Of Lead, Mervin Joe Kelly, Ralph Knappenberger
Bachelors Theses
"It has been pointed out that Alexander's Molybdate Method for lead gives inconsistently varying results when calcium is present in the ore...It was to clear up this apparent contradiction and to find the true effect of the presence of calcium on the titration in the molybdate method, that this investigation was started"--Introduction, page 1.
The Preservation And Interpretation Of Ripple Marks And Sun Cracks, Donald Hewson Radcliffe
The Preservation And Interpretation Of Ripple Marks And Sun Cracks, Donald Hewson Radcliffe
Bachelors Theses
"The Roubideaux sandstone (Cambrian) which is rather extensively found in the vicinity of Rolla, Mo., offers exceptional opportunities for the study of ripple marks and sun cracks in place. Fig. 1 shows the principal localities in which these structures are to be found in this vicinity.
The statement is made by Van Hise and others that ripple marks can be used in determining structures, and that to do this it is necessary to be able to tell whether a ripple mark is right side up or overturned. The rule as laid down by them is: That a normal ripple mark …
Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy
Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy
Bachelors Theses
"The purpose of this article and the data contained is an attempt to show how the percentage of manganese varies with different mounts of zinc salt present. It was also intended to determine the ratio of manganese to oxygen and zinc in the brown percipitate sic obtained upon the titration of manganese sulphate against a permanganate solution in the presence of varying quantities of zinc, but through an oversight the data is insufficient for this purpose"--Introduction, page 2.

The Psychology Of Senescence: An Introductory Study, Charles W. St. John
The Psychology Of Senescence: An Introductory Study, Charles W. St. John
Historical Dissertations & Theses
The following biographical studies have been made with the purpose of showing through concrete cases some aspects of mental decline in senescence. To the objection that each of these cases follows a course in a degree divergent from that of normal mental decline, the reply is that a study of these striking instanced, we believe, afford a more ready insight into the underlying phenomena than would a similar one which deals with average or typical cases. The significance of exceptional cases should not be underestimated. Certain peculiar conditions have been present which have modified the typical phenomena, but after due …

Housing Conditions In Worcester, Harry L. Jackson
Housing Conditions In Worcester, Harry L. Jackson
Historical Dissertations & Theses
The physical basis of the home, the dwelling-place of the family, is inseparably bound up with and affects to a marked degree the standard of the home. If we are at all interested in the present and future welfare of our city it is highly essential that we know what the housing conditions in Worcester are in view of the close relation between home and community.
We must admit that the citizens here as a whole have given the all-important subject of housing very little attention. One must not therefore infer that we have no housing problem. Every American city …

An Abbreviated Scheme For The Detection Of Acid Radicals., Mary Pressley Smith
An Abbreviated Scheme For The Detection Of Acid Radicals., Mary Pressley Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In studying qualitative chemistry, two things impress you. The one being, the systematic, inclusive and generally accepted tables for the detection and identification of the several metals; the other, the lack of any agreement as to the method of the identification of acid radicals. The metal analysis tables are so well arranged and so true that even the inexperienced person finds little or no difficulty in working with them. But with the acid radicals, it is an entirely different proposition. There is no generally accepted grouping of the radicals into divisions, some text books giving as many as seven divisions …
Le Misanthrope., Henry William Lenz
Le Misanthrope., Henry William Lenz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to show that there is found in this "noblest of comic masterpieces" an absorbing study of mankind and a profound knowledge of the human heart. It is In his work that man gives himself to the world; in his literary efforts he gives a vivid portrayal of himself, his real and inner self is splendidly revealed, though the merely material man is kept in the background. Bearing this in mind the writer has endeavored not so much to depict the character of Moliere, but, rather by an analytical process, to designate the elements which …

Analysis Of Water-Insoluble Proteins Of Flesh : An Application Of Van Slyke's Method Of Analysis Of Pure Proteins., H. H. Mcgregor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The fundamental importance of a definite knowledge of the quantity of each amino acid yielded by the several food proteins justifies the expenditure of much effort in studying the analytical methods in order that these may be improved or their limitations definitely ascertained." "From the standpoint of physiological chemistry it is highly desirable that the present very limited knowledge of the protein substances of flesh be increased." The desirability of a knowledge of the amino acid content of food proteins has led to much experimentation looking towards a method that will yield quantitative results without involving excessive time or manipulation …
Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee
Atmospheric Nitrous And Nitric Acids And Their Absorption By Rain And Surface Water., Alexander Y. Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Having been born and brought up in China, an empire, where the people are utterly ignorant of the vital importance of a good system of public water supply, and having decided to take chemistry as my profession, I feel intensely interested in the examination of water for the purpose of convincing our people in the far east to pay proper attention to sanitation on a chemical basis. The average life period there has been roughly estimated to be thirty years, and we have now in the Middle Kingdom a population of 450,000,000. It means in each century we have approximately …

American Mural Painting, Fanny E. Perkins
American Mural Painting, Fanny E. Perkins
Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations
The first two chapters contain an exceedingly condensed statement of the limitations of mural painting and the history of its development in Europe, - a background for the real theme, which commences in the fairs chapter with an outline of the beginnings of mural painting in America. Chapter IV treats the Chicago World's Fair as an epoch-making event in the art, and develops the history from that point to the present day. The existing examples of mural painting in America are then divided into four classes, for convenience of description. Chapter V deals with those paintings having a religious theme, …

Coal Washing, Mark S. Sheffer, Thomas Andrew Stroup
Bachelors Theses
"The rapid growth of the coal washing industry in the United States during the past few years is characteristic of the general tendency toward more economical and efficient utilization of the natural resources, the washing of coal being a process of enrichment of one of the most necessary and widely used raw products. This industry is of great importance to the men engaged in mining of coal as well as to the community at large, and since it makes possible the use of originally poor coals, it conserves one of the natural resources absolutely essential for the progress of the …
The Measurement Of Compressed Air And Its Consumption In Rock Drills, Homer Kent Sherry, William Porri
The Measurement Of Compressed Air And Its Consumption In Rock Drills, Homer Kent Sherry, William Porri
Bachelors Theses
"The object of this thesis is to investigate the measurement of compressed air and to determine its consumption in rock drills. Our intention at first was to run more exhaustive tests on the drills, but due to the large amount of work necessary in rigging up the apparatus and computing results, we found it necessary to curtail our work to representative types of the hammer and the piston machines. We regret being unable to give more complete data in regard to the drills, but hope to point out fields for future work since, with the increased facilities now at hand, …

Roasting Pyrite For Magnetism With Minimum Sulphur Volatilization, Dale Irwin Hayes, Clark Watson Wright
Bachelors Theses
"In Wisconsin and other zinc mining districts the blende is frequently found associated with pyrite and marcasite. In the Wisconsin district, especially, the marcasite content of the mine-run ore is high being frequently equal to and in many cases greater than the sphalerite content. At time the marcasite and sphalerite together constitute as much as 25 or 30% of the min-run ore. The characteristic milling treatment of this ore is; first, hand-picking, and then over grizzlies, tromells, rougher and cleaner jigs. Owing to the fact that marcasite and sphalerite differ but slightly in specific gravity the jig concentrate obtained is …
