Prospecting In Western Mexico, Theodore S. Delay Jan 1901

Prospecting In Western Mexico, Theodore S. Delay

Professional Degree Theses

"This article is dedicated and addressed to any man who contemplates a prospecting expedition in Mexico. I have made no attempt at a display of literary elegance, or scientific erudition. My aim has been to point out and explain such of the conditions of the business as are peculiar to Mexico. If any one, after having perused these pages, should find himself thereby the better able to cope with the difficulties of such an expedition, a rather unprofitable experience of the writer will have been not wholly fruitless"--page 31.

James Barron Hope : Virginia's Poet-Laureate, Cullen S. Pitt Jan 1901

James Barron Hope : Virginia's Poet-Laureate, Cullen S. Pitt

Master's Theses

Previous to the Civil War comparatively little literary work had been done in the south. Of course if we take into consideration all kinds of composition, such as narratives of adventure, diaries, histories, speeches, sermons and the like, we are forced to admit that the total amount was very large. But when we speak of literature in the higher and more restricted sense, we mean that which stimulates the imagination, awakens thought and aims to please as well as to instruct. And, using the word in this narrow and more restricted sense, it is quite evident that there had been …

The substructure consists of seven piers, including a pivot pier, and two abutments. The seven …

The Sympathy And Understanding Of O. Henry, M. Bernard Rheude Jan 1900

The Sympathy And Understanding Of O. Henry, M. Bernard Rheude

Bachelors’ Theses

After all, the true test of a good story is not whether the teacher in English approves of it or not, or whether the critics in the magazines let it pass or not, but whether or not it appeals to the reader, - to the individual reader, and to groups and nations of readers. It seems to me, that now-a-days there is altogether too much unreality, if not dishonesty, in literary criticism. And this dishonesty and unreality have been injected into the minds of boys and girls by responsible professors of English in our high schools particularly. In the classroom, …

Catalogues That Tell How, Elmer L. Hartmann Jan 1900

Catalogues That Tell How, Elmer L. Hartmann

Bachelors’ Theses

The most important factor in the production of a good catalogue is a perfectly clear idea as to exactly what the catalogue is meant to accomplish. It is often tritely said that a catalogue is to "sell goods." In truth, the best thing that a catalogue can do is to procure "an order" for goods but before this can happen some thing must occur after the receipt of the catalogue before any goods are actually sold, and that something generally happens in the mind of the buyer.

The Necessity Of Tradition In Literature, A. F. Jaeger Jan 1900

The Necessity Of Tradition In Literature, A. F. Jaeger

Bachelors’ Theses

"'Art is instinct working upon an unbroken chain of tradition. The difficulty of our period is to reawaken the perception of beauty in people who have no longer the natural eye of tradition to perceive it with. Yolk art is dead now, killed, with the tradition of it by Commerce. It was once alive. The proof of artistic tradition lies in its artistic. The kings, the statesmen, the soldiers of the ages disappear, but the art of ages remains." (From "People and Things"--:Masaingham) Literature, like any other art cannot cut itself off from tradition. The influence of the past critically …

The Systhesis Of Camphor From Pinene, Edwin W. Newbury Jan 1900

The Systhesis Of Camphor From Pinene, Edwin W. Newbury

Bachelors’ Theses

The increasing demand for camphor for use in the manufacture of cellulose plastics has led to a great amount of investigation of the nature of this valuable substance and as to its synthesis from materials which are readily obtainable without the necessity for sending overseas for them. At present most of the camphor used in the manufacture of celluloid and allied compounds is imported from Japan or Borneo, where it is obtained, in a rather crude and wasteful fashion, from a species of laurel. Some scientifically operated camphor plantations have been started in the United States.. In one such plantation …
