A Summary Of The Theories Of The Origin Of The Lake Superior Copper Ores, With Evidences Pertaining Thereto, Eva Endurance Hirdler Jan 1911

A Summary Of The Theories Of The Origin Of The Lake Superior Copper Ores, With Evidences Pertaining Thereto, Eva Endurance Hirdler

Bachelors Theses

"In each of the foregoing theories we obtain sound reasoning in connection with many facts. Therefore a correlation of these facts ought to give us enough material to deduct a sound theory. The most plausible supposition seems to be that all metallic ores are derived ultimately from the interior of the earth, from a great metallographic province, when they are delivered by igneous eruptives near or at the surface"--Conclusion With Reasons, page 29.

Evidence Pertaining To The Origin And Deposition Of Ore Deposits, James Edward Mcgoughran Jan 1911

Evidence Pertaining To The Origin And Deposition Of Ore Deposits, James Edward Mcgoughran

Bachelors Theses

"In looking over the evidence grouped in the foregoing tables it is at once evident that by far the greater number of the ore deposits are associated with igneous rocks, and that they have resulted from deposition from not solution. It appears that, relatively, deposition by segregation from an igneous magma is of much less importance than deposition from solution, in the formation of ore bodies. However, segregation is the only explanation possible in accounting for some very important deposits, but they are very few in number. In distinguishing between deposits resulting from hot ascending meteoric solutions and those resulting …

Mine Map And Geology Of Saltpeter Cave, Milan Harrison Detweiler, Frank Edgar Townsend Jan 1911

Mine Map And Geology Of Saltpeter Cave, Milan Harrison Detweiler, Frank Edgar Townsend

Bachelors Theses

"The date of discovery of Saltpeter Cave is not known and there is no way of determining it. Numerous accounts are given of the cave by the oldest settlers in the neighborhood, some of which are both startling and interesting. for instance, it is reported that the soldiers of the Confederate army visited this cave for the purpose of securing guano from which to extract saltpeter for use in the manufacture of gunpowder. This may be the origin of its name"--Geology, Page 1.

The Design Of A Sampling Mill To Treat A South East Missouri Lead Ore, Robert Nathaniel Copeland, Edwin Cook Mcfadden

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of the work that was undertaken in preparing this thesis was to provide plans and specifications for a sampling mill to be erected by the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Co. at their plant near St. Francois, Mo... It was intended at the outset to design the plant completely and to provide full working drawings and specifications for all parts of the mill. On account of the lack of time, however, it has been found necessary to somewhat reduce the amount of work. As a result only general plans and specifications with a few of the more important …

Ratio Of The Thermal And Electrical Conductivities For Gas Carbon, Oscar Alan Randolph Jan 1911

Ratio Of The Thermal And Electrical Conductivities For Gas Carbon, Oscar Alan Randolph

Bachelors Theses

"The method of F. Kohlrausch for the determination of the ratio of the heat conductivity upside down gamma , to the electrical conductivity k of a substance is of practical value as well as of theoretical interest. Of practical value because there may be obtained from it - with much great ease than by direct methods - the heat conductivity which has immediate applications, not only to the design and construction of furnaces, but to various other matters of such import; of theoretical interest to the physicist, because of the Wiedmann-Franz and its consequent relation to the electron theory; to …

Design And Details Of Construction For A 50-Ton Amalgamation, Concentration, And Cyaniding Mill, Hector Julio Boza, Carlos Enrique Elmore Y Guerra

Bachelors Theses

"Our problem is to design and provide for the construction of a mill to cyanide a certain gold ore. Full laboratory experiments have been made on the ore and on the results of these tests together with the consideration of the conditions of locality, transportation facilities, and labor available we have based the design of our mill. Our aim has been to so design the mill that the capacity may be increased without necessitating any change of arrangement in the part already constructed. To increase the capacity up to 100 tons practically the only additional equipment required will be in …

The Determination Of The Electrical Resistance Of The Human Body Under Conditions To Be Met Within Underground Mining, Duncan S. Smith, Paul E. Coaske Jan 1911

The Determination Of The Electrical Resistance Of The Human Body Under Conditions To Be Met Within Underground Mining, Duncan S. Smith, Paul E. Coaske

Bachelors Theses

"The use of electric wires in mines for power purposes is dangerous to human life. Deaths occur every year from electric shocks, and in most cases these accidents could have been prevented if some precaution had been taken by the victims, or if some care had been taken to protect them from coming in contact with live wires. Most workingmen accustomed to working around electric wires become careless and a lack of knowledge of the danger involved gives rise to the many accidents that occur each year...The object of this investigation is to determine just what resistance the human body …

Juvenile Deliquency In Worcester, Massachusetts, Thomas Charles Carrigan Jun 1910

Juvenile Deliquency In Worcester, Massachusetts, Thomas Charles Carrigan

Historical Dissertations & Theses

A study of "Juvenile Delinquency in Worcester" was made by Albert H.N. Baron of Clark University in May 1906. Worcester was then a city of about 130,000 inhabitants and Baron's study covered the period from 1901 to May 1906. The period chosen in the present study is from May 1907 to April 1910 and Worcester at this writing has a population of about 146,000. The present study is intended to supplement Baron's to April 1, 1910, except for the interval between May 1906 and June 1907. During these thirteen months the present juvenile law (Chapter 413 of the acts of …

Energy Loss In Commercial Condensers, Walter Roland Allen May 1910

Energy Loss In Commercial Condensers, Walter Roland Allen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The investigation of the energy loss in condensers is one which electricians and experimenters have long carried on. Their efforts have been restricted chiefly to alternating currents. Many methods have been proposed and used with varying success. The losses in condensers are due to dielectric hysteresis and leakage. That the dielectric of a condenser becomes heated when an alternating current is applied to terminals has long been known. A condenser which has been charged does not lose its entire charge when it is discharged, part of it remaining as a residual charge. Kleiner used the thermo-couple embedded in the dielectric …

Our Rivals : The Molds, Yeasts And Bacteria., H. B. Knighton May 1910

Our Rivals : The Molds, Yeasts And Bacteria., H. B. Knighton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this day when the erstwhile plebian hog has taken to scaling the social ladder and has climbed beyond the ken of many an honest workman, it behooves the housewife to wage, with double zeal the warfare on our rivals, the molds, yeasts and bacteria who come as unbidden guests eating the very food that we must have, raising enormous families at our expense, frequently making themselves obnoxious as long as the food lasts, then quietly withdrawing into themselves and either waiting for a fresh supply of food or allowing the housewife to start them by the dust-brush route to …

Laboratory Methods For Copper-Nickel Ores, Walter Irving Phillips Jan 1910

Laboratory Methods For Copper-Nickel Ores, Walter Irving Phillips

Professional Degree Theses

"The Sudbury nickel field, situated in the Province of Ontario, Canada, near the northern shore of Lake Huron, was practically discovered when building the Canadian Pacific Railway. The method of deposit is unusual in that it is not a vein filling but a true igneous deposition. The magma carried besides rock making constituents three principle sulphides, viz. - those of iron as pyrrhotite; of copper as chalcopyrite; and of nickel as pentlandite. These three sulphides, being heavier than the rock matter, and, favored by the slow rate of cooling of the magma, had sufficient time to settle into the lowest …

An Investigation Into The Causes Of Accidents To Shot Firers In Bituminous Coal Mines, George Edwin Lyman Jan 1910

An Investigation Into The Causes Of Accidents To Shot Firers In Bituminous Coal Mines, George Edwin Lyman

Professional Degree Theses

"In many cases the explosions which kill so many shot firers can be directly attributed to the presence of gas, or coal dust, but often there will be explosions of terrific violence in mines which are so wet as to preclude the possibility of dust being held in suspension in the air current, and where no gas has been detected in the history of the mine. Such an instance came under the writer's observation some time ago in which his opportunities of investigation were excellent, and the results of which may perhaps throw light on other apparently mysterious explosions of …

Reheating Compressed Air By Internal Combustion, Norman L. Ohnsorg Jan 1910

Reheating Compressed Air By Internal Combustion, Norman L. Ohnsorg

Professional Degree Theses

"The perfection of a reheater of high efficiency has been discussed and experimented upon for a period of time nearly as long as the application of compressed air itself. At the present time all the reheaters are by the external combustion of fuel as in the case of stoves or furnaces, where the air pipes are carried through the flames or is surrounded by steam pipes, or by some similar contrivance, all of which the heating efficiency of the fuel upon the compressed air is low, due to the great loss by radiation, and hot escaping gases. Reheating compressed air …

A New Copper District In Southern Arizona, Harry Carleton Chamberlain Jan 1910

A New Copper District In Southern Arizona, Harry Carleton Chamberlain

Professional Degree Theses

"Within the last two or three years, the copper mining industry has been growing at a remarkable rate. Perhaps not so much in the output of refined copper as in the exploitation and development of new fields. The panic of 1907 left its mark only too deep on many of the then producing mines. the inflated price of copper has aroused interest in those who owned or controlled small or undeveloped mines ... One of these districts is the one to be treated of in this report. It is not a new discovery, but rather one of the oldest camps …
