The Determination Of The Critical Sizes In Table Concentration, Julius C. Miller, John N. Webster Jan 1914

The Determination Of The Critical Sizes In Table Concentration, Julius C. Miller, John N. Webster

Bachelors Theses

"It has been observed in table concentration that the ore band consists of the coarest sic particles of ore on the bottom or low side. Further up on this ore band the coarse particles grade into finer particles, until a certain marked degree of fineness is reached by which the mineral can no longer adhere to the table top, but must be carried over by the wash water as slimes. To determine the critical size of ore of practical value which will remain in the concentrates band, under certain variable conditions, is the purport of this thesis"--Object of Experiment, page …

An Investigation Of The Leaching Of Copper Tailings By Means Of Potassium Cyanide, Precipitation Of The Dissolved Copper By Means Of Aluminum, With Consequent Regeneration Of The Cyanide Consumed, Thaddeus Reamy Goldsborough Jan 1914

An Investigation Of The Leaching Of Copper Tailings By Means Of Potassium Cyanide, Precipitation Of The Dissolved Copper By Means Of Aluminum, With Consequent Regeneration Of The Cyanide Consumed, Thaddeus Reamy Goldsborough

Bachelors Theses

"One of the principal disadvantages attending the use of most of the usual solvents for Copper, such as Sulphuric Acid, Ferrous Chloride, etc., in the treatment of tailings products, is that the solvent is not regenerated upon precipitation by iron, and in fact is destroyed by the precipitant. This of course involves a dead loss of a definite portion of acid or other reagent, proportional to the amount of Copper dissolved. A solvent which would be regenerated upon precipitation is eminently desirable. At the same time, a carbonate gangue, or one of such a nature which will react with the …

Flotation Applied To Basic Ores, Orion Dexter Neal Jan 1914

Flotation Applied To Basic Ores, Orion Dexter Neal

Bachelors Theses

"Concentration, by flotation, as used in to-day is limited to the ores containing an acid gangue. Although, it is probable, that in a few instances flotation schemes are being used on certain ores containing basic gangue, the processes are carefully guarded as trade secrets. It was with ores containing basic gangue that the experiments embodied in this thesis were made, in an effort to determine some means of concentration and also to determine the best conditions for some of the varying factors"--page 1.

The Efficiency Of The Kerruish Smoke Consumer And Coal Economizer, Arthur F. Truex, Gilbert F. Metz Jan 1914

The Efficiency Of The Kerruish Smoke Consumer And Coal Economizer, Arthur F. Truex, Gilbert F. Metz

Bachelors Theses

"The Kerruish Smoke consumer is the invention of Mr. H. B. Kerruish and is patented in the United States under the Patent Number 1,046,196. The tests herein shown were made for the purpose of determining the practical value of the device as a smoke consumer, and as a fuel economizer. Many forms of these devices have been put on the market, some using a steam spray, and others using air in a manner similar to the Kerruish apparatus"--Scope of the Thesis, page 2.

A Comparison Of Crushing Machines, Clyde Willis Hall, Walter Henry Wager Jan 1914

A Comparison Of Crushing Machines, Clyde Willis Hall, Walter Henry Wager

Bachelors Theses

"Much has been written on the comparative efficiency of the various sorts of crushing machines used in the art of Ore Dressing, but it must be confessed that the subject has by no means been reduced to one of the exact sciences as yet. This is rather a sad condition of affairs, for as is of course apparent to the most casual observer, the whole fabric of ore dressing rests and depends to a large degree on the efficiency and economy of the crushing machinery. Inefficient crushing means high costs, irrespective of the thoroughness and cheapness with which the ensuing …

Amalgamation And Refining Of High Grade Silver Ores Containing Arsenic And Antimony, Edwin Bryant Thornhill, Robert Emmett Dye Jan 1914

Amalgamation And Refining Of High Grade Silver Ores Containing Arsenic And Antimony, Edwin Bryant Thornhill, Robert Emmett Dye

Professional Degree Theses

"The advantage of shipping refined silver bullion over the shipment of concentrate to a smelter has been apparent to mine operators in this district for years but not ill recently was the project undertaken by the Buffalo Mine Limited, Cobalt, Ont., Canada. Early in 1912 experiments were conducted by H. G. S. Anderson with this end in view. The results of these experiments led to the erection of an amalgamation plant, the design and construction of which was carried out by Mr. Anderson...It is not the hope in this paper to set forth facts that are entirely new as similar …

Methods Of Prospecting And Estimating Ore Bodies Of The Wisconsin Zinc And Lead District, Guy Henry Cox Jan 1914

Methods Of Prospecting And Estimating Ore Bodies Of The Wisconsin Zinc And Lead District, Guy Henry Cox

Professional Degree Theses

"The stratigraphy and structure of the Wisconsin Zinc and Lead District are remarkably simple; so simple in fact that one is liable to under estimate their importance in relation to the ore deposits. But four formations are of interest to one operating in this district, all of which are Ordovician in age and which in ascending order are, - the St. Peter sandstone, the Platteville limestone, the Galena dolomite, and the Maquoketa shale"--Geology - Stratigraphy - General, page 1.

A Test To Determine The Operating Efficiency Of A Steam Driven Electric Power Plant, Walter H. Rosemeyer, Edward Walter Kane Jun 1913

A Test To Determine The Operating Efficiency Of A Steam Driven Electric Power Plant, Walter H. Rosemeyer, Edward Walter Kane

Bachelors’ Theses

In this test it was desired to determine the amount of water evaporated per pound of coal, and the pounds of steam consumed by main engine per kilowatt-hour output. Because of the existing conditions the test was run on only one boiler but on account of the similiarity of construction the results on the other boilers were assumed to be practically the same. The coal used was Hocking Valley Screenings, abituminous coal, which, from tests conducted by the engineer to determine the fuel best suited to the conditions of the plant, was found to give the most economical results. Since …

The purpose of the test was to determine the coat of generating one kilowatt-hour of electrical energy under existing conditions of operation. The plant under test is located at the Marquette University Power House and consists of a Filer Stowell Company simple, horizontal, now-condensing Corliss steam engine, with an Allis Chalmers Company direct current generator belt connected, and one Fairbanks, Morse & Company horizontal return tubular boiler. The coal used during the test was Pocahontas screenings, costing three and twenty-five cents per ton of 2000 pounds, delivered in the boiler-room.

The Religious Element In The Popular Ballads., Elizabeth Phillips Mcconathy Jun 1913

The Religious Element In The Popular Ballads., Elizabeth Phillips Mcconathy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study of the religious element in the popular ballads is based largely on Mr. George L. Kittredge's edition of Mr. Francis J. Child's collection of English and Scottish popular ballads, the completeness of which, up to this time, has not been disputed.* Mr. Kittredge has printed in his volume one or more versions of every ballad which Mr. Child has given as an authentic folk ballad (omitting Nos. 33, 279, 281, 290 and 291), besides including a few of somewhat doubtful origin. It has not been judged necessary for the purposes of this article to discuss more than …

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft May 1913

The Chemical Distribution Of Phosphorus In Potato., Hattie L. Heft

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first effective impulse to a systematic investigation of the chemistry of food was given by Liebig some fifty years ago. The earliest quantitative analyses of food materials which we have found are those of potatoes reported by George Pearson in England, 1795. In 1805, Einhoff made similar analyses of potatoes. He also determined several of the constituents of the ash. Liebig and his associates Playfair, Boeckman and others, in the latter half of the last century, made analyses of foods using methods similar to those now in use. It is interesting to observe how accurate many of their results …

The Preservation And Interpretation Of Ripple Marks And Sun Cracks, Donald Hewson Radcliffe Jan 1913

The Preservation And Interpretation Of Ripple Marks And Sun Cracks, Donald Hewson Radcliffe

Bachelors Theses

"The Roubideaux sandstone (Cambrian) which is rather extensively found in the vicinity of Rolla, Mo., offers exceptional opportunities for the study of ripple marks and sun cracks in place. Fig. 1 shows the principal localities in which these structures are to be found in this vicinity.

The statement is made by Van Hise and others that ripple marks can be used in determining structures, and that to do this it is necessary to be able to tell whether a ripple mark is right side up or overturned. The rule as laid down by them is: That a normal ripple mark …

The Measurement Of Mineral Electrode Potentials, John Charavelle Ingram Jan 1913

The Measurement Of Mineral Electrode Potentials, John Charavelle Ingram

Bachelors Theses

"The present investigation was undertaken with a view to consider the variables which tend to cause inaccuracy in the above mentioned measurements and as preliminary to a further study of the subject by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines. The subject is one which, judging from the work of others and from my own experience, will require much more experimentation before results are obtained which are sufficiently reliable for the use of the economic geologist"--Introduction, page 3-4.

Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy Jan 1913

Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this article and the data contained is an attempt to show how the percentage of manganese varies with different mounts of zinc salt present. It was also intended to determine the ratio of manganese to oxygen and zinc in the brown percipitate sic obtained upon the titration of manganese sulphate against a permanganate solution in the presence of varying quantities of zinc, but through an oversight the data is insufficient for this purpose"--Introduction, page 2.

The Potato, I. S. Oakland Jan 1913

The Potato, I. S. Oakland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I respectfully submit this investigation and thesis to the committee of Master of Science, realizing that a long time is needed for proving any scientific principle no matter how large or small that truth may be. I have labored patiently for the last two years trying to find what part inheritance takes in lowering the yield of tubers in this state. I found that inheritance plays an important part in lowering the yield. I also found that there was a direct relationship of size of seed piece to yield, and that possibly the low yield of today is due to …

The Child's Bible, Leonidas Latimer Loofbourow Jan 1913

The Child's Bible, Leonidas Latimer Loofbourow

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Every lover of scripture takes a Bible for himself within our larger one. He may read the 60 books from a sense of duty or profit, but there are portions that he loves, which he reads time and again. Those are the Bible within the Bible that he has made for himself. Any Bible used long and effectively by one person has this story to tell. Torn edges, pencillngs, thumbmarks plentiful here, and large sections of clean pages there show what the owner may never have dreamed, that he has his personal edition of our common Bible. This is inevitable. …

The Nature Of The Reactions Occurring In The Distillation Of Zinc From Its Ores And The Effect On The Speed Of These Reactions Due To Certain Variables, Robert Glenn Sickly, Charles Yancey Clayton Jan 1913

The Nature Of The Reactions Occurring In The Distillation Of Zinc From Its Ores And The Effect On The Speed Of These Reactions Due To Certain Variables, Robert Glenn Sickly, Charles Yancey Clayton

Bachelors Theses

"The reactions that occur in the metallurgy of zinc are in general well known as to the end results obtained. The zinc smelter desires a maximum recovery in a minimum time. There are certain factors that govern the fulfillment of this desire. The most important of these are TEMPERATURE, TIME, KIND OF REDUCTION MATERIAL, and THE NATURE OF THE ORE. There is much data available as to the temperatures at which these reactions go on and also there is obtainable some information as to the speed with which these reactions progress, particularly as to the length of time required for …
