Mendelian Inheritance In Wheat Hybrids, J. Leo Mortensen May 1923

Mendelian Inheritance In Wheat Hybrids, J. Leo Mortensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Until the beginning of the present centry the general opinion was that Egypt and Mesopotamia were the earliest homes of cultivated plants. Recent translations of the old Chinese records, however, reveal the fact that many of our cultivated plants were grown by the ancient peoples of China prior to the time of the Egyptians.

Dettweiler (11) (1914) writes: "Today it is admitted--except by a few--that the original home of the primitive European population, the Indo-Germans, is not Asia but northern Europe, that they developed their culture there in the late stone age, and that they then dispersed in their wanderings …

Improvement Of Small Grains By Pure Line Selection, Dilworth Walker May 1923

Improvement Of Small Grains By Pure Line Selection, Dilworth Walker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present economic status of grain farming in the United States calls for adjustments in various ways. Legislation, such as price fixing, can do very little. Adjustment of acreage along with improved methods of marketing can do much. But improvement of the grains grown through breeding processes to increase the yields per acre and improve the milling quality, will render a service of permanent value, since all of the results appear in the profit column.

The Expulsion Of Sir John Harvey From Virginia, William Warner Moss Apr 1923

The Expulsion Of Sir John Harvey From Virginia, William Warner Moss

Honors Theses

Whe n King James began to fear the preaching of Sir Edwin Sanys and the meetings of the Virginia Company, believing that the seeds they sowed were too democratic, he felt sure that the dissolution or at least the royal control of the Companyw as a necessity. He therefore attempted to interfere in the election of the treasurer but failed. Enraged, he commanded Captain Nathaniel Butler to write a libel entitled "The Unmasking of Virginia", which held the Virginia Company responsible for all the evils in America.

This served him little better than his interference, so, in April 1623, he …

A Study Of The Flowering And Fruiting Habits Of The Delicious Apple, Emery R. Ranker Apr 1923

A Study Of The Flowering And Fruiting Habits Of The Delicious Apple, Emery R. Ranker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the most disagreeable and at the same time the most unprofitable features of commercial apple production is the tendency of most apple varieties to "take a rest" every other year in order to regain the strength given to the production of a very heavy crop the previous year, and thus be able to repeat the process of heavy production the following year. This process is referred to as "off-year" or alternate bearing. Various causal relationships have been suggested , from time to time, by the different workers in the field but the suggestion now most generally accepted, and …

Boiler Feed Water Purification At The Gorge Power Plant, Akron, Ohio, Bernerd William Adams Jan 1923

Boiler Feed Water Purification At The Gorge Power Plant, Akron, Ohio, Bernerd William Adams

Professional Degree Theses

"The conditions of operation at the Gorge Power Plant were such that raw water was used in all the boilers. The boilers were operated at an average of about one-hundred and seventy-five percent rating and considerable scale formed in the tubes of the boilers. It was evident that this caused a large loss in fuel and increased the expense of maintenance. It was necessary to employ a number of men to remove the scale. An investigation was made to determine as nearly as possible the loss caused by the use of impure water. After the investigation, an attempt was made …

Project For The Construction Of A Standard Gauge Railroad From Guanajay To The Port Of Mariel, P Del R, Royal Sylvester Webster

Professional Degree Theses

"The great industrial development of the Island of Cuba during the period of the World War and the succeeding years, causing the congestion of the existing transportation lines and shipping facilities, has necessitated the opening up of new routes and the providing of additional and better facilities. In the latter part of this period, the decline in the price of sugar, the principal product of the country, has made imperative its more economical production and marketing, which has tended to the opening up of new and cheaper routes to ports of export. The Relative Feeding Value Of Soybean Meal Compared To Linseed Meal As A Protein Supplement For Dairy Cows For Milk And Fat Production, And Their Effect On The Quality Of The Butter Fat, John R. Bollinger Jan 1923

The Relative Feeding Value Of Soybean Meal Compared To Linseed Meal As A Protein Supplement For Dairy Cows For Milk And Fat Production, And Their Effect On The Quality Of The Butter Fat, John R. Bollinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The expansion of the dairy industry to all parts of our country has caused further search for protein feeds suitable for dairy cattle, both from the standpoint of the cow, and as an economical feed. The dairy farmer has been urged to produce roughages high in protein, but these usually do not suffice to make a balanced ration for high producing cows. Oil meal, cottonseed meal, and gluten meal have long been used as supplements in grain mixtures and have given satisfactory results. These concentrates are produced in limited areas, hence must be shipped, which adds to their cost, besides …

The Influence Of The Diet Of The Cow And The Effect Of Heat Upon The Antiscorbutic Potency Of Milk, Lynn Copeland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inroduction: For a long time there has been a belief among scientific investigators and medical men that certain diseases, both of man and animal were the direct result of a faulty diet. In other words, something which was needed by the body for maintenance of growth and health was thought to be frequently lacking in the diet of man and animal. Attention was first called to these accessory substances thru investigations into the cause of the disease beri-beri. In 1884, the Japanese Navy, under the direction of Admiral Takaki, positively demonstrated that beri-beri was the result of a faulty diet, …

The Influence Of The Size And Design Of Nails On Their Efficiency With Respect To Driving And Pulling From Various Species Of Wood, George Emil Heck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis gives the results of a study of the influence of the size and design of nails on their efficiency with respect to driving and pulling from various species of wood. The study was made at the Forest Products Laboratory of the United States Forest Services in cooperation with the American Steel and Wire Company, primarily to compare two types of nails, a common nail with plain head and regular point, and a special nail with a larger checkered head and a longer “diamond” point. The results indicate in a general way that the blunter point is the more …

A Comparative Study Of Methods Of Proportioning Concrete, Lawrence C. Maugh Jan 1923

A Comparative Study Of Methods Of Proportioning Concrete, Lawrence C. Maugh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A continual increase in the use of concrete as a building material has greatly increased the demand for more definite knowledge of the factors that are conductive to strength and economy of construction. It has been found necessary to acquire this knowledge largely through definite and extensive experimental work under conditions that can be carefully controlled and regulated. Although a considerable amount of experimental work upon the properties and proportioning of concrete has been performed in the last decade, the conflicting statements that have been made clearly indicate that this field of research and investigation is by no means complete. …

The General Cytology Of The Aecium Of Dicaeoma Distichlidis, Lynn D. Hutton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the summer of 1921, Professor E.J. Petry noted an unusually severe uredinial infection on a small patch of Spartina cynosuroides (L) Roth, along the Chicage and northwestern right-of-way near Brookings, South Dakota. Along with this occurred an aecidial infection on Steironema ciliatum (L) Raf. Since the Steironema was small and mingled with the Spartina in places, a connection between the telial stage of the latter with the aecidial attack was trongly suspected. The infection occurred only on the lower leaves of the Steironema and this heightened the probabili8ty of infection from the teliospore sporadia of the Spartina which lay …

The Disintegration Of Refractory Brick By Carbon Monoxide, Wilbur J. Darby Jan 1923

The Disintegration Of Refractory Brick By Carbon Monoxide, Wilbur J. Darby

Masters Theses

"In experimental work carried on at East St. Louis, Illinois in 1916 and 1917, with a furnace of commercial size for the electrothermic dry distillation of zinc ores, a difficulty that developed was the destruction of the firebrick lining in certain parts of the large condenser. The condenser was satisfactory in other ways, yielding a large proportion of the zinc as liquid metal, with no blue powder; but in order to obtain a proper length of service from the condenser it became necessary to find and overcome the cause of the disintegration of the lining ... it will be evident …

The Waning Power Of The Press In Politics, Edmund Sinnott Carpenter Jan 1923

The Waning Power Of The Press In Politics, Edmund Sinnott Carpenter

Bachelors’ Theses

The newspaper is here to stay and so is politics! And thus, as they march on down through the ages, each a mighty being, the two cannot but be associated to some extent. Both are undergoing constant changes, a steady evolution. The newspapers are as different now from what they were back in 1800, as is politics; even more so. And that's a great change.

The History Of Banking In Wisconsin, Matthew J. Coveney Jan 1923

The History Of Banking In Wisconsin, Matthew J. Coveney

Bachelors’ Theses

The business of banking is of great antiquity and in its simpler forms no doubt was understood and practiced by the Assyrians, Babylonians and Athenians. As the taking of interest for money lies at the root of all banking and furnishes the chief motive for it, wherever a people were sufficiently advanced to loan money for hire, there would naturally spring up many of the practices and methods of modern banking...

Business Value Of Trade Journalism, Arthur Joseph Hantschel

Bachelors’ Theses

Tightened competition, increased specialistic production and service, demand that a large field be covered thoroughly with specific knowledge and information on marketable goods and service in order to enable producers and manufacturers to increase sales, or to maintain a consistent output of any product; this requires that all possible avenues of distribution be utilized, some of these avenues extending thousands of miles from the center of production or manufacture, into foreign territory, and in competition with many articles of the same kind or related utility.
