Accounts For The Handling Of Subdivisions, Raymond D. Illig Jan 1924

Accounts For The Handling Of Subdivisions, Raymond D. Illig

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject of, "Accounts for the handling of subdivisions" is still in its infancy, and in the writer's knowledge has never before been treated as a separate subject. Real Estate accounting of which subdivision accounting is a branch, has itself never been developed to any extent, either in this country or abroad, consequently there is very little literature on either subject.

The Physiographic History Of Five River Valleys In Northern Ohio, Milton M. Champion

Honors Papers

The purpose of this paper is to explain as far as possible with the data at hand the origin of the five river systems of the area and the physiographic features of their valleys. First, each of the five river valleys will be taken up in a general way; then particular sections of the valleys will be described in detail after which some of the physiographic features not fully explained in the detailed descriptions of the river valleys will be discussed. Finally summary conclusions will be made.

From Cape Town To Cairo, Leslie L. Jones Jan 1924

From Cape Town To Cairo, Leslie L. Jones

Honors Theses

Cecil Rhodes has been dead twenty-two years. The flesh of the man has long since become dust; his dreams are about to become realities... two slender streaks of shining steel form Cape Town to Cairo. For the red now cleaves the heart of Africa, north and south, from the Inner Sea to The Cape of Good Hope. A great splash of red up and down this vast continent where fifty years ago but little red was to be seen.

And this is the simple task I have set myself in the present paper: accounting for the red, this astonishing growth …

Indication Of The Attitude Of Virginia Colleges Toward The Institution Of Slavery, 1800-1860, Katherine Tyler Jan 1924

Indication Of The Attitude Of Virginia Colleges Toward The Institution Of Slavery, 1800-1860, Katherine Tyler

Honors Theses

It was natural that the Virginia college should concern themselves with the all-important subject of slavery in the sixty years' interval of the widespread discussion which cumulated in one of the most bitter and distressing struggles that the United States has ever experienced. For, had not Virginia always taken the foremost stand in any matter concerning the South's welfare, and was not her heartfelt anxiety representative of all her fellow states?

The Solubilities Of Certain Inorganic Salts In Anhydrous Normal Alcohols, William Orval Keeling Jan 1924

The Solubilities Of Certain Inorganic Salts In Anhydrous Normal Alcohols, William Orval Keeling

Masters Theses

"An examination of the literature shows that extensive studies have been made of the solubilities of inorganic salts in aqueous, normal alcohols, but that little has been done in determining the solubilities in anhydrous alcohols. Northing was found of a systematic study of the solubilities of NaCl, KCl, NaN0₃ and KNO₃ in the lower alcohols over a fairly wide range of temperature. The author has made a study of the solubilities of the above mentioned salts in lower anhydrous normal alcohols at the temperatures 20°C, 25°C, 30°C and 40°C"--Introduction, page 1.

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh Jan 1924

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh

Masters Theses

"The Electrolytic Process is a process capable of almost unlimited mechanicalization. For obvious reasons it is more economic to treat high grade concentrates; yet, the extremely high grade concentrates are not essential. The Electrolytic Process can treat economically concentrates as low as 30.% zinc under certain conditions. It is significant that as the grade of concentrates offered for treatment is lowered, the treatment cost per ton of concentrates decreases for the Electrolytic Process; whereas, it will increase, as previously stated, for the Retort Process. It is seen then that the position of the Electrolytic Process is strengthened where lower grade …

Lactose Fermenting Bacteria In The Water Supplies Of The Rolla Quadrangle, Joe Beaty Butler Jan 1924

Lactose Fermenting Bacteria In The Water Supplies Of The Rolla Quadrangle, Joe Beaty Butler

Masters Theses

"I. Preliminary investigations. This includes the securing of 139 water samples from water sources in the Rolla Quadrangle, and inoculating 1cc samples from these into Dunham's Lactose tubes and thereby getting lactose gas production checks on the field samples. II. Confirmatory tests. This consisted in the isolation of lactose fermenters on Eosin-Methylene Blue Agar and checking of the cultures back through the lactose and then through dulcitel and saccharose so as to complete Jackson's Classification. 106 cultures were classified in this manner. III. Running through a complete set of tests of pure cultures, so as to completely (as possible) identify …

The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer Jan 1924

The Effect Of Endocrines Upon Animal Behavior., J. Hubert Geyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is not the primary purpose of this present work to treat the problem of the evolution of behavior, but rather to give an analysis of animal behavior as observed. These observations may appear as simple tests, but they make possible a new way to measure the capacity and determine the rate of learning by the animal mind. Progress in learning takes place through increased variety and precision of the movements brought about by stimulation and is very clearly observed in Amoeba, where we find the production of varied movements and the resolution of one physiological state into another. Thus …

A Town Hall, Arthur Ernst Koelle Jan 1924

A Town Hall, Arthur Ernst Koelle

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations

The study of a Municipal Building has always appealed to me for many reasons. A building of this sort deals with problems of public planning, public circulation and what we might say municipal architecture as far as the exterior is concerned. Problems that deal with the pacing of public utilities in accessible and practical locations, demand the utmost study and thought and consequently more is learned from this type of study than from that of a private building. Then, too, in the study of the exterior of public buildings the designer is given a chance to build into the architecture …

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers Jan 1924

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers

Masters Theses

"In 1921, an investigation was carried on by Messrs. Howe, Foley and Winlock, under the auspices of the National Research Council, the results of which were published under the title of - "Influence of Temperature, Time and Rate of Cooling on Physical Properties of Carbon Steel," by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, February, 1923. These results showed that all physical properties of a 0.34 C. percent steel are improved by increasing the rate of cooling from temperatures above the critical range up to a certain rapidity beyond which, there is a gain in strength at the expense …

Accident Prevention In Cement Plants, Edward Rees Abbott Jan 1924

Accident Prevention In Cement Plants, Edward Rees Abbott

Bachelors Theses

"The cement industry as a whole took up accident prevention work along with the pioneers. With the organization of the Portland Cement Association, a Bureau of Accident Prevention was formed. This Accident Prevention Bureau, by sending out literature, holding competitions, collecting and tabulating results of accidents collected from every cement manufacturer and affiliating with National Safety Council as the Cement Section, has made rapid strides each year, until today it is doubtful if any other branch of manufacturers can show more improvement in accident records than the cement industry. In spite of their marked improvements each year, there were 47 …

The Analysis Of Stresses And Design Of Multiple-Arch Dam, Guy Robert Scott Jan 1924

The Analysis Of Stresses And Design Of Multiple-Arch Dam, Guy Robert Scott

Bachelors Theses

"The so-termed: "Multiple", or "Scallop-Arched" dam, as its name implies, is one composed of a series of arches, either semi-circular or segmental in plan. These arches were first vertical but were later inclined downstream, when the engineers recognized the value of the weight of water in increasing the resisting moment. The thrust of these arches, due to the water pressure and the weight of the arch itself, is transmitted directly to the buttresses. There are numerous advantages to this type of dam over that of the gravity type"--Introduction, page 1.

Transmission Of Electrical Energy At 220,000 Volts, Robert Wilhelm Ahlquist

Bachelors Theses

"A. E. Silver at the Annual Convention of the A.I.E.E. in 1919 gives some of the reasons why 220,000 Volt transmission is a logical and feasible commercial proposition. He also gives some of the main features of the undertaking...Owing to the great scope of this paper it has been thought necessary to generalize on the discussion of the first two topics and to treat the next two in more detail"--Statement of Scope of this Paper, pages 3-4.

Alternating-Current Resistance And Inductance Of Single Layer Coils, Clarence N. Hickman Dec 1923

Alternating-Current Resistance And Inductance Of Single Layer Coils, Clarence N. Hickman

Historical Dissertations & Theses

An integral equation method is used to develop formulas for the alternating-current resistance and inductance of a system of parallel "go and return" circuits. It is shown how these formulas may be applied to single-layer coils. The formulas are applied to several coils in which the "skin effect" is quite pronounced. These coils are measured at several frequencies and the results compared with the computed values. The methods of measurements are explained and a discussion is given pertaining to the distribution of the effective resistance in a coil. The eddy current losses due to dead ends are measured and discussed. …

Viability Of Bacillus Typhosus In Media Of Various Kinds In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Barrett Elmer Aug 1923

Viability Of Bacillus Typhosus In Media Of Various Kinds In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Barrett Elmer

Biology

A careful study of the literature on the viability of the typhoid organism reveals a startling lack of agreement. Potter, in a series of experiments, comes to the conclusion that if a repressing effect occurs on B. typhosus because of the acidity of milk due to souring, it is so small as to be negligible and as a consequence such acidity cannot be depended upon to eliminate the organism. Baker, after experimenting on milk and butter, isolated the typhoid organism after 45 days from milk and after 151 days from butter. Frankel and Kister find the typhoid organism perishing in …

Silent Reading, Nano Armstrong Aug 1923

Silent Reading, Nano Armstrong

Bachelors’ Theses

There are two distinct types of reading, oral reading and silent reading, and each type calls for a different ability on the part of the child. Therefore, it is very important that we recognize at the outset these two different abilities. Both kinds of reading are now taught, but by far the greater part of our time and attention is devoted to oral reading. When we consider that after leaving school most of our reading, in fact practically all of it , is of the silent reading type, it is easy to understand that there is error in this arrangement.

A Study Of The Tissues Of Leaves Of Certain Angiosperms, Amybelle Halbert Brady Jun 1923

A Study Of The Tissues Of Leaves Of Certain Angiosperms, Amybelle Halbert Brady

Bachelors’ Theses

The leaves used for the study of the tissues were those of the Oleander, Ficus, Ivy, Cyperus and the Aristolochia. Portions of the leaves used were cut into rectangular pieces, about one centimeter long and one half centimeter wide, each piece including a portion of a large vein and its subsidiary veinlets. The material was placed into chrome acetic acid solution. After twenty four hours it was a shed in running water for twelve hours and then dehydrated by means of alcohol, and was then imbedded in paraffin. The sections used for the study were cut from 12 to 15 …
