A Volumetric Method Of Chromium Determination With Mercurous Nitrate, Gerald W. Lawton

Bachelors’ Theses

Boncyk in his research on potentiometric titrations, made the observation that apparently mercurous nitrate could be used to titrate chromic acid solution. He used potassium iodide as an outside indicator and found that a slight excess of mercurous nitrate gave a gray precipitate with potassium iodide solution. The precipitate seemed to indicate the end point, or the neutralization of the chromic acid; a slight excess of the mercurous nitrate causing the immediate formation of a gray precipitate. Not knowing the exact normality and purity of the solutions used, he could not ascertain whether the gray was the true end point, …

Extra-Curriculum Activities In The Junior High School, Clara S. Mueller

Bachelors’ Theses

Extra-Curriculum Activities occupy a place in every junior high school. The widespread interest in extra-curriculum activities has led to the study of various phases of the problem.

The apparent need for something to satisfy pupils with abilities unsuited to the prescribed traditional curriculum, turned my interest especially toward extra-curriculum activities since such a program can at least in a measure make adjustment for the individual differences in our students. The desire for further information as to the values, the place demanded, and the time allotted to extra-curriculum activities in our schools were motives which stimulated me to reading and study …

The Suburban Weekly, Henry V. Straka May 1931

The Suburban Weekly, Henry V. Straka

Bachelors’ Theses

Until recent years, there were only two classes or· types of journalism, metropolitan and community, their products being the city daily and the small town weekly. With changing social and industrial conditions, however, and a consequent growth or' suburban communities, another and distinct type of journalism has grown up. This is the suburban weekly. Just as the community newspaper is radically different from the metropolitan daily, so is the suburban weekly distinct from either. It is not a glorified country paper, neither is it a small-scale city newspaper. While it embodies some of the features of both, it is yet …

A Study Of The Plating Prohibitive Properties Of Various Separators, Bruno J. Pozorski May 1931

A Study Of The Plating Prohibitive Properties Of Various Separators, Bruno J. Pozorski

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of this thesis is to study the plating prohibitive properties of the various materials commonly used in the manufacturing of separators, and to indicate which material would be most serviceable and feasible in a separator. At one time positives and negatives were kept not more than 0.25 inches apart, with the idea of reducing the intervening layers of electrolyte, and, therefore, the internal resistance of the cell, as much as possible. It was, however, found that the output could actually be increased by putting the plates at greater distances, the fact being that the larger bulk of solution …

Diagnostic And Remedial Measures In Reading In The Intermediate Grades, Elsie Dickerhoff Thompson

Bachelors’ Theses

"The development of reading as a branch of study began with the Reformation. Types Of Reading Activities In The Junior High School, Mae Rooney May 1931

Types Of Reading Activities In The Junior High School, Mae Rooney

Bachelors’ Theses

Reading has always had a place of first importance in the elementary school curriculum. However radical changes have taken place in the teaching of reading during the last twenty years. A generation ago, emphasis was placed upon oral reading, but it is recognized today that silent reading needs more teaching emphasis than oral reading because it is recognized that silent reading is used far more in the daily life of the individual. The average person encounters numerous situations daily when he is called upon to get the thought from the printed page and apply it in his life. In comparison …

Walter Pater As A Literary Critic, Paul R. Pichotta May 1931

Walter Pater As A Literary Critic, Paul R. Pichotta

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show the true worth of Walter Pater as a literary critic, to trace the elements which entered into his literary judgements, and to give an appreciation of his representative literary criticisms. In an attempt to criticize a man's critical work it would be foolhardy to say the least, to omit a discussion of the man's philosophy of life, especially of a man of Pater's peculiar and somewhat paradoxical temperament. I have therefore opened this study with an analysis of Pater's philosophy and followed it with a study of his style--assuming that his view …

The United States, moreover, had acquired possessions in the Caribbean and assumed the duties of a protector and administrator over the affairs of certain islands in the Caribbean and of certain Republics bordering on that …

Hardness And Porosity In Chromium Plating, Waldemar Wick

Bachelors’ Theses

In recent years chromium plating has been subjected to much research due to its ever-increasing demand. The results of these investigations have demonstrated the valuable properties of this plate. Of its many advantageous properties, hardness is one of the outstanding ones, but its application in industry is as yet not fully realized. This being due to the fact that it is difficult to produce a plate that is uniform and does not chip. Many chemists have investigated the porosity of the chromium plate in order to produce a coating that could be used for protective purposes, but there seems to …
