Tunnels And Tunneling, James E. Fulcher
Tunnels And Tunneling, James E. Fulcher
Professional Degree Theses
"A tunnel is defined as a sub-terranean or sub-aqueous way, for purposes of passage. The term is also applied, in mining, to horizontal excavations, such as are commonly called drifts, headings, adits, etc., and used as underground roads, or passages for water or air.
Tunneling, at the present day, has become of such importance, that it is in its-self a profession.
The subject of Tunnels and Tunneling properly treated would require a large volume, but taking into consideration the time and space allotted to the preparation of this thesis, I shall be brief; and in order to treat it to …

Extraction Of Silver By The Wet Way, Justo Garcia Martinez
Extraction Of Silver By The Wet Way, Justo Garcia Martinez
Bachelors Theses
"The great variety of ores in which silver occurs, usually makes it necessary to employ complicated processes for its extraction.
The extraction of the precious metal admits of two general processes viz. The Dry, and Wet Way and as I have chosen the latter for the subject of my thesis, we will be dispensed with the Dry Way, and will try and give all the processes and forms in which silver is extracted by the Wet Way"--page 1.
Leaching Processes For Silver Extraction, Phil Van Frank
Leaching Processes For Silver Extraction, Phil Van Frank
Professional Degree Theses
"The leaching process for the extraction of silver are comparatively modern, being introduced in 1849. They belong to a period in which the metallurgist has brought to his aid knowledge derived from chemical research. Under favorable circumstances leaching procedures process many advantages over amalgamation or smelting. For successful use the ores treated for silver must not contain large per cents of lead, zinc, antimony or arsenic. The objections to these bodies will be named later on. When silver is extracted by smelting or amalgamation, a costly plant is necessary, which requires constant repair and in time wear out and be …

A suspension bridge consists of the towers or piers over which the main chains or cables pass; the anchorages to which the ends of the cables are attached; the main chains or cables from which the roadway is suspended; the suspending rods or chains which connect the roadway with the cable and the roadway.
The sub-structure consists of the foundations, piers &c. The super-structure consists of the roadway and the chains or cables"--page 1.
Interoceanic Canal Projects, Frank W. Wilson
Interoceanic Canal Projects, Frank W. Wilson
Professional Degree Theses
"The construction of a canal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans has been discussed since the discovery of the New World and the whole world has only been waiting until some feasible and economical plan should be offered by which this construction could be made.
The narrow neck of land lying between the continents of North America and South America seems especially adapted to this purpose and has for years tempted exploring parties thither to seek for a practicable canal route. Of late years however another scheme has been proposed which surpasses in magnitude and in economy as well, …

Metallurgic Industries Of South Missouri, Philip Gallaher
Professional Degree Theses
"The metallurgic industries of South Missouri consist chiefly of iron, lead and zinc industries. These are widely distributed over the southern counties and in many localities the works are extensive, proving in many cases to be great sources of wealth. In the production of Iron the profit is small. Yet this industry, owing to a growing demand, is steadily increasing"--page 2.

The Systems Of Amalgamation, Floyd Davis
The Systems Of Amalgamation, Floyd Davis
Bachelors Theses
"Mineralogists have shown that gold, with few exceptions, occurs in the metallic state, disseminated in ores or scattered throughout alluvial deposits of old river basins. Silver is quite similar in its occurrence, but it is almost universally found in combination with other elements. The means in which these metals occur forms a large factor in determining the most economical and efficient systems of metallurgical treatment"--page 1.
Hydraulic Mining, Arthur Neustaedter
Hydraulic Mining, Arthur Neustaedter
Professional Degree Theses
Hydraulic-mining has undoubtedly its origin in America and principally in the west, when gold was found in 1848 it was imbedded in strata of clay, land and gravel, the question arose how should we get it out of the clay and etc.? and here is the origin of hydraulic-mining. First there was used the simple “pan”, then something better was found, the “cradle,” and then it came to the “tom”, “sluice” and lastly to “hydraulic mining”, all of these come under the head of hydraulic-mining, but the last which bears that name is resorted to only in situations where the …

Turbine Wheels And Water Power, Herman N. Van Devander
Professional Degree Theses
"A turbine water-wheel is one through which the water passes guided by channels either interior or exterior to the wheel its self and the walls of these channels or guides as they are termed, are placed in such positions, as to impinge the water on to the blades or wheel buckets at such an angle as will insure the greatest efficiency. The guides and buckets are usually curved in opposite directions, and are so placed with regard to each other, that the water enters the wheel with the least possible shock and leaves it with the least possible velocity. Turbines …
The Metallurgic Treatment Of The Iron Ores Of Southwest Missouri, Beauregard Ross
The Metallurgic Treatment Of The Iron Ores Of Southwest Missouri, Beauregard Ross
Professional Degree Theses
I can say nothing new upon the subject of the Metallurgy of Iron. The science has approached such a degree of perfection that very little, if anything, has been left to be said. The attention of the modem metallurgist should be devoted to the mechanical contrivances which will enable him to manipulate the work of his men to the best advantage rather than to an improvement in the process”—Introduction, page 6.

Imaginary Functions, Floyd Davis
Imaginary Functions, Floyd Davis
Bachelors Theses
"The imaginary expression which occurs in common Algebra, and in all the higher departments of mathematical science, has been one of the most perplexing problems which the human mind has encountered in any age. It was studied by the early mathematicians and became a field of speculation, but developed no marked results, for it was generally considered algebraically and in the interpretation is a symbol of an impossible operation. But many of the problems arising from algebraic-geometrical analysis involving imaginaries was of such importance to mathematical and physical science that great attempts were made to establish their solution. It was …

Inter-Oceanic Transit, Loren X. Smith
Inter-Oceanic Transit, Loren X. Smith
Professional Degree Theses
"The feasibility of constructing a canal communication between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and crossing the American Isthmus has been discussed and written on since the time of Columbus but the subject has attained its present popularity only within the last few years. For several years past the press has almost constantly kept the project before the public and the indications now are that in the close of the 19th century some one of the many schemes that has been suggested will be in active operation. There has been various routes suggested for canals with and without locks. This paper …

Location, Construction, And Drainage Of Common Roads, Edward B. Summers
Location, Construction, And Drainage Of Common Roads, Edward B. Summers
Bachelors Theses
To write upon, and do justice to the subject of common roads, it is necessary that one should be familiar with every variety of them. The roads in some of the advanced and highly civilized communities are of a most admirable character; while in the new and thinly populated countries, they are found deficient in nearly all the attributes of good roads. Only a few kinds that may be in some of the most populous districts will be here designated.
