Production Of Spelter From Calamine, Merritt W. Yeater Jan 1887

Production Of Spelter From Calamine, Merritt W. Yeater

Professional Degree Theses

Calamine is one of the most important ores of Zinc and together with the silicates with which it is almost always associated is extensively employed for the production of Zinc. Smithsonite formerly called calamine when pure, consists of Zinc oxide and carbonic acid containing 52 percent of Zinc. It has a specific gravity of 4.2, hardness 4.5m and color is from pale yellow to green.

The silicate when anhydrous called Willemite, contains 58 percent of Zinc, specific gravity 4, hardness 5.5, and color from white to gray or pale yellow.

When hydrous it is called Calamine, specific gravity 3.16 to …

The Ore Knob Copper Process, Oscar Lachmund Jan 1887

The Ore Knob Copper Process, Oscar Lachmund

Professional Degree Theses

"The works of the Ore Knob Copper Company are situated in the County of Ashe in the north-western part of the state of North Carolina, about ten miles from the Virginia line at an elevation of 4000 feet above the sea.

The works are 45 miles from the railroad, which makes the transportation very difficult. These unfavorable conditions make it necessary for the owners of the mine to smelt their ores and to send to market nothing except the metal, which alone will bear the cost of transportation. The mine was opened previous to 1860, but has only been worked …

Tunnels And Tunneling, James E. Fulcher Jan 1886

Tunnels And Tunneling, James E. Fulcher

Professional Degree Theses

"A tunnel is defined as a sub-terranean or sub-aqueous way, for purposes of passage. The term is also applied, in mining, to horizontal excavations, such as are commonly called drifts, headings, adits, etc., and used as underground roads, or passages for water or air.

Tunneling, at the present day, has become of such importance, that it is in its-self a profession.

The subject of Tunnels and Tunneling properly treated would require a large volume, but taking into consideration the time and space allotted to the preparation of this thesis, I shall be brief; and in order to treat it to …

Extraction Of Silver By The Wet Way, Justo Garcia Martinez Jan 1886

Extraction Of Silver By The Wet Way, Justo Garcia Martinez

Bachelors Theses

"The great variety of ores in which silver occurs, usually makes it necessary to employ complicated processes for its extraction.

The extraction of the precious metal admits of two general processes viz. The Dry, and Wet Way and as I have chosen the latter for the subject of my thesis, we will be dispensed with the Dry Way, and will try and give all the processes and forms in which silver is extracted by the Wet Way"--page 1.

Leaching Processes For Silver Extraction, Phil Van Frank Jan 1885

Leaching Processes For Silver Extraction, Phil Van Frank

Professional Degree Theses

"The leaching process for the extraction of silver are comparatively modern, being introduced in 1849. They belong to a period in which the metallurgist has brought to his aid knowledge derived from chemical research. Under favorable circumstances leaching procedures process many advantages over amalgamation or smelting. For successful use the ores treated for silver must not contain large per cents of lead, zinc, antimony or arsenic. The objections to these bodies will be named later on. When silver is extracted by smelting or amalgamation, a costly plant is necessary, which requires constant repair and in time wear out and be …

Limes, Mortars, And Cements, Curtis Alexander

Professional Degree Theses

"Lime, calcic oxide, or quick-lime contains 40 parts of the metal calcium and 16 of oxygen by weight and has a specific gravity, depending on its porosity from 2.3 to 3.8. It is a white alkaline earthy substance, quite infusible and is the only oxide of calcium. It is obtained pure by heating pure calcic carbonate to full redness; which expells the carbonic anhydride"--page 1.
