"Before entering into the especial subject for which this paper is intended, it is, perhaps, best to give a few prefatory remarks, as to what Concrete really is, the method and manner of its formation and it application in foundations and engineering structures.
Concrete may be defined as a species of artificial stone.
Its ingredients may be classified into two parts, viz:
First, the matrix which is either lime or cement, or a mixture of both.
