"In Wisconsin and other zinc mining districts the blende is frequently found associated with pyrite and marcasite. In the Wisconsin district, especially, the marcasite content of the mine-run ore is high being frequently equal to and in many cases greater than the sphalerite content. At time the marcasite and sphalerite together constitute as much as 25 or 30% of the min-run ore. The characteristic milling treatment of this ore is; first, hand-picking, and then over grizzlies, tromells, rougher and cleaner jigs. "Very few of the interesting points bearing upon the formation of iron di-sulphide will be treated in this paper. The laboratory tests made are considered to have been sufficiently thorough to substantiate the ideas set forth so that exhaustive tests were not necessary. While the field evidence was collected largely in the Joplin district of Missouri, the conclusions are sufficiently generalized to be applicable to any district in which pyrite and marcasite have been derived from cold solutions"--page 2.

Legislatures early adopted the committee system referring bills to them for investigation. The growth in the volume and diversity of laws, together with the shortness of terms and dominance of the theory of rotation in office, rendered expert knowledge on the part of the committee rare. As a result, special committees of the legislature for investigation became common. With the increased pressure of work, it was but a step to the appointment of committees outside of the legislature who were expert in the subject. This practice has continued to this day. A study of the history of industrial education in Massachusetts is instructive and of peculiar interest for several reasons. It was the first state to scientifically investigate industrial education, and to pass laws as committing the state to actively engage in the establishment of industrial schools. It has had a more varied history in the administration and control of this form of education than any other state, and exceeds all other states, with the possible exception of New York (in 1911), in the number of and the variety of types of industrial schools.
