"The catalytic effect of neutral salts has been investigated for numerous reactions and various theories propounded to account for their action. In this work the action of normal potassium and sodium sulphates on solutions of the corresponding acid salt has been investigated for two concentrations of the latter at three different temperatures. "Investigations have shown that the iodine content of natural waters bears a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A number of the states have analysed [sic] their water for this constituent in the development of this hypothesis. A search of the literature revealed the fact that with the exception of two instances the iodine content of Missouri water had not been determined. Since in certain regions of Missouri there is quite a prevalence of goiter, it was deemed important to determine the iodine content of Missouri waters. "The manufacture of oxalic acid includes as one of the steps in the process, the conversion of calcium oxalate to the desired oxalic acid by treatment with sulphuric acid, and the subsequent crystalization [sic] of the oxalic acid from the solution of it thus made. This investigation has dealt with this conversion step, with regard to the various factors affecting it. The effect of time, acid concentration, temperature, volume of solution, solubility of reaction products, and possible compound formation have all been considered, and from the information thus gained the conclusion has been drawn"--Introduction, page 1.

"In the process of oil refining, a certain fraction of distillate from the crude oil composes the so-called wax distillate fraction from which is obtained the various lubricating oils. But the presence of the waxes and solid paraffins in these oils is very undesirable as they possess no lubricating qualities. Psychology is the middle ground between philosophy and science. Philosophy deals with the interpretation of facts, with, a view to determining their ultimate cause. It is the search for knowledge of general principles--elements, powers, causes and laws--as explaining facts and existences. Science is systematized knowledge of facts, laws and proximate causes, gained and verified by exact observation. Science is the effort to show how laws operate, and how certain facts affect other facts. Philosophy seeks to show why laws operate as they do, and to discern what is the first fact. In the bulk of experiments on animal feeding the Albino Rat has served as the experimental animal. It has been proved that any diet which brings about satisfactory growth in white rats will also cause a young child to grow satisfactorily. Therefore, much attention is given to the breeding of such rats for experimental and scientific use. In the earlier stages of experimental work it was found that a diet which contained sufficient protein material and which yielded the proper number of calories because of the fat, sugar, and starch present, was a satisfactory diet. The study of the relationship between chemical constitution and physiological effect embraces many very interesting problems which are, however, frequently difficult to solve. In the investigation of any drug the first step is to determine the principle to which the physiological effect is due, and then by analysis and synthesis assign the correct chemical constitution to this principle. When the chemical constitution is definitely known, other compounds of a similar structure may be prepared, and their physiological action compared with the original drug. The task I have set myself is one to which my interest has been led by a varied experience in high school teaching followed by several years teaching in college where our high school product is largely disposed of. In all that experience the giving of grades was a bugbear, a necessary evil apparently, and it occurred to me that if those grades had or could be made to have some value beyond the moment, sone directive or prognostic value, they might lose their 111-reputation in the minds of both pupil and teacher.
