Groups Of Order Eight, Ludwig Eugene Loos May 1934

Groups Of Order Eight, Ludwig Eugene Loos

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of this thesis is to show that there can be only five groups of order eight. Its basis is Kronecker's Theorem, and it demonstrates that, regardless of the number of generators used in composing the groups, the result will always be limited to four groups of order eight. The fifth and last group is a cyclic group formed on eight letters.

Criminal Justice In Milwaukee County January 1, 1929 To December 31, 1932, Francis Michael Mccarthy

Bachelors’ Theses

For many years the Court system of Milwaukee County has enjoyed a reputation for efficiency. There is need for more studies to determine wherein this efficiency lies. In the following pages there is merely set forth a group of studies of the District and Municipal Courts of Milwaukee County. No effort was made to gather material in such quantity that a history of the Court system could be compiled, but efforts were made to determine just how the Courts acted during the years 1929, 1950, 1931 and 1932.

The Effect Of Halowax 1012, 1013 & 1014 On The Melting Points Of Various Waxes, Louis Henry Kroening May 1934

The Effect Of Halowax 1012, 1013 & 1014 On The Melting Points Of Various Waxes, Louis Henry Kroening

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is concerned with the melting points of various waxes and the effect of Halowax 1012, 1013 and 1014 upon their physical constants. Interest in this problem was aroused "by the fact that Halowax as shown by Nathan Smith in his thesis, "The Effect of Halowax Upon Lubricating Oils and Greases”, decreases the viscosity of oils. Since lubricating oils contain waxes it is logical to expect that this decrease in viscosity is due to the lowering of the melting point of the waxes present. It was to investigate the truth of this assumption that this work was begun.

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Ternary Mixtures Of Waxes, Leonard Anthony Veranth May 1934

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Ternary Mixtures Of Waxes, Leonard Anthony Veranth

The work undertaken in this thesis is a continuation of the work done by George John Hable entitled, "A Study of Melting Points of Various Binary Mixtures of Waxes". In the present work, the melting points of ternary mixtures of waxes is studied. The experimental work is presented in the form of graphs so that the reader is afforded a better representation and clearer conception of the work done and the results obtained.

Observations On The Gross Anatomy Of The Venous System Of Adult Chelonia, James S. Kain May 1934

Observations On The Gross Anatomy Of The Venous System Of Adult Chelonia, James S. Kain

Bachelors’ Theses

The turtle is a reptile belonging to the order Chelonia. Because it is so very abundant and its size so convenient it has been much used for class work and to a certain extent has been studied rather thoroughly by private workers. Each one, however, stressing his or her own particular point of interest especially, the turtle is attractive to students of Comparative Anatomy because of the fact that it has retained more of the primitive characteristics of the ancestral form from which the mammals are descended than any other readily available reptile.

John Jacob Astor In Oregon, Linus A. Zadra May 1934

John Jacob Astor In Oregon, Linus A. Zadra

Bachelors’ Theses

The United States was yet a comparatively young nation in 1800. Although victorious in the war for independence, and although formally recognized ln the Treaty of Paris (1783), yet England did not treat her former colonies as a separate nation for her troops still occupied the American frontier posts at Mackinaw, Niagra, Detroit, and Oswego. The war, moreover, put a heavy burden of debt upon the United States. The country was on the verge of bankruptcy. Each colony floated its own issue of worthless paper money. There was little activity under these conditions along the frontier; hence, we find very …

Backfield Play In Football, Charles Joe Wild May 1934

Backfield Play In Football, Charles Joe Wild

Bachelors’ Theses

Twenty-five or thirty years ago the selection of a football team was mainly a matter of picking out the biggest and strongest men on the squad. The weaker or lighter men were eliminated during the first weeks of practice by a series of scrimmages and by other hard bodily tests. It was a common belief that the men who withstood these first drills were the men who were of varsity caliber. One of the common methods of training a team in the early days was to have the men spend hours falling on the ball. This useless practice was supposed …

The Relation Of Horace To Augustus, Harry Stanley Perla May 1934

The Relation Of Horace To Augustus, Harry Stanley Perla

Bachelors’ Theses

The topic of this thesis was selected after reading various criticisms of Augustus as written by authors of the last decade. Though not treated as comprehensively as other phases of Horace's life, this topic nevertheless is another method of studying and criticizing Horace. The relation of Horace to Augustus is illustrated in the very writings of Horace and therefore the topic has a close connection with the writings of the poet. Because of this connection, and because of its interest, this topic was chosen.

The History Of The Jews, Hyman Popuch May 1934

The History Of The Jews, Hyman Popuch

Bachelors’ Theses

As a matter of fact, the history of the Jews for the past 2600 years has been the history of Judah; i.e., of the people who inhabited Southern Palestine. For the most part, they are all descendants either of the tribe of Judah or of the "Kohanim" and "Leviim", the priestly families that resided in Judah. From the very beginning this name had a religious connotation. It is interpreted as "Praising the Lord." Hence the name "Yehudi" or "Jew" accurately describes their origin. When we speak of their role in history, it is largely the records of the descendants of …

The Land Problem In Palestine, Ibrahim H. Kashou May 1934

The Land Problem In Palestine, Ibrahim H. Kashou

Bachelors’ Theses

Today, the world finds itself at the crossroads. Nationalism which reigned supreme for over a century and a half is face to face with a new trend of thought, a new philosophy, internationalism. Will the latter supplant its predecessor? Will it be reduced to oblivion? Or will it be merged and absorbed by the fast entrenched system of capitalism and imperialism? That cannot be answered with surety at this time, nor is it my purpose to do so, for time can only tell.

Inigo Jones, Grace Pendergast May 1934

Inigo Jones, Grace Pendergast

Bachelors’ Theses

It is only within the last ten or twelve years that the unprofessional students have had any very exact accounts of Jones' work. The writings of Mr. Reginald Blomfield and Mr. Loftie, and also the drawings published by two of his disciples, Mr. Henry Tanner and Mr. Inigo Triggs, have put him in a much bolder light. The last named writers went, by way of preparation for their book, on a devout Inigo Jones pilgrimage and they visited most of the country houses made by him that still remain. Just a few fragments of his works remain. This was another …

The History Of Development Of Stadia, Carroll C. Roark May 1934

The History Of Development Of Stadia, Carroll C. Roark

Bachelors’ Theses

Athletics and athletic games have been a part of man's life ever since his beginning. Naturally, in order to play these games, he had to have a place in which to play. He could not go out into his own back yard or his neighbor's and hold a chariot race or track and field meet. Special places had to be devised for the holding of such contests. Hence, began the development of what was to become our modern stadia. It is my purpose to trace the history and development of these places, from the earliest sources possible, up to our …

Bachelors’ Theses

Turtles are reptiles in which the body is wide and short, and is enclosed in a shell composed of a dorsal shield, the carapace, and a ventral shield the plastron. The shell of three of the species is composed of large external, epidermal, horny plates. These latter consist, in the carapace, of the flattened ribs and the flattened trunk vertebrae which coalesce with overlying dermal bony plates, and are surrounded on the circumference of the shell by a series of marginal dermal bony plates; in the plastron they consist of exclusively dermal plates, there being no sternum. The carapace and …

A Method Of Determining The Relative Thermal Conductivities Of Liquids, Lohr Arthur Burkardt May 1934

A Method Of Determining The Relative Thermal Conductivities Of Liquids, Lohr Arthur Burkardt

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis concerns the development of apparatus suitable for the practical determination of the thermal conductivity of liquids. The data presented in the literature refers to the determination of absolute conductivity values and-is very unsatisfactory from a practical point of view. The aim here has not been to furnish absolute data, but to provide a simple means of determining the relative conductivity of any series of liquids. Knowing such a set of relative conductivities, absolute values can readily be calculated therefrom.

The aim has been to develop an apparatus that is simple enough to be constructed in the ordinary laboratory, …

Socio-Economic Indices And Their Relation To Outdoor Relief In Milwaukee County, Catherine Mary Coffey May 1934

Socio-Economic Indices And Their Relation To Outdoor Relief In Milwaukee County, Catherine Mary Coffey

Bachelors’ Theses

In writing this thesis I had the intention to show briefly and graphically the growth of outdoor relief in Milwaukee County as compared with economic indices. To a certain extent the existing relationship of these is one. I have used the figures compiled by Malcolm Morrow of the Milwaukee County Department of Outdoor Relief to whom I am deeply: grateful both for the figures and additional help he gave me. My personal thanks are due too to Miss Susan M. Drew, the librarian of the Milwaukee County Courthouse, whose compilation of historical facts I used; to Mrs. Margaret Wilson, Director …

Regulation Of Motion Pictures For Children, Mary Elizabeth Coffey May 1934

Regulation Of Motion Pictures For Children, Mary Elizabeth Coffey

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is not to condemn motion pictures. The writer realizes the important role the films play in educational, social and recreational life today. But because all pictures are not suitable for child audiences (nor does the writer believe that motion pictures should be produced only on child level) the writer in the course of this study will recommend some specific form of regulation of motion pictures for the vast child audience.

The Effect Of The Nitrogen Fixation And Of Aeration Upon The Growth Of Yeast In Culture Media, Syrene C. Bernstein

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject of yeast has been widely studied from many viewpoints; we can find many bacteriological, physiological, and chemical papers on the subject. Besides the purely scientific work on yeast, there are numerous industrial investigations on this subject, since yeast growth and the products of yeast growth form the foundation for such important industries as the distilling, brewing, baking industries as well as commercial yeast manufacture. The effect of nitrogen fixation has been treated from all of these angles, scientific and industrial, and the investigations include the form in which the nitrogen is most easily assimilated, the manner of the …

The Contributions Of David Belasco To The Theatre, Betti Murphy Bergs May 1934

The Contributions Of David Belasco To The Theatre, Betti Murphy Bergs

Bachelors’ Theses

A thesis treating of David Belasco must, of necessity, be built around his realism in his productions. However, so many authors have spoken of him from only that angle, that it would be futile and absurd to devote more time and writing to it. Therefore this thesis shall touch upon his realism only insofar as it is concerned with the subject on hand.

The purpose of this thesis shall be to present a survey of David Belasco and his productions in New York. Obviously a background for his theatrical pursuits must be given.
