Milton As Historian, Lando Clarence Otto May 1937

Milton As Historian, Lando Clarence Otto

Student Work

When considering Milton’s prose, one usually thinks first of the Areopagitica, then, perhaps, of the divorce pamphlets, the pleas for the abolition of episcopacy, and the political writings. As a historian Milton is ordinarily remembered only in connection with the famous passages in Paradise Regained concerning the rule of the Romans and the culture of the Athenians. But the poet and pamphleteer also wrote a history of England, which is of significance not only because it elucidates his other literary productions but also because it is noteworthy as a work of historical research in its own right.

A Study Of The Equilibria Between Bentonite And The Various Replacing Agents In Alcoholic And Water Solutions, Joel E. Fletcher

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Investigators in soils have long recognized the importance of the colloidal fraction of soil, and also the almost inseparable problem of replaceable bases. It is generally accepted that the replaceable base fraction of a colloid controls to a large degree the physical properties exhibited by it. Volumes of work have been written on the problem of controlling the reactions of this fraction and on studies of the properties exhibited by it when it is saturated with various cations. Each worker has proceeded in his own individual way or followed the example set by some previous worker with specific modifications.

A portion of the Uintah Indian Reservation, which was created in 1861, was opened to white settlement under the homestead and townsite laws on August 28, 1905 after 103,000 acres of farming land had been allotted to individual Indians living on the reservation and 276,000 acres reserved for Indian grazing lands and timber reserve.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Especially during the last century the health of school children has been a problem of deep concern. Many physical examinations have been given by numerous organizations with the intention of discovering organic disorders that might be detrimental to a child's normal social life. As a result of such study, humanity has generally come to recognize the social and economic costs of ill-health and has embarked on remedial and preventive campaigns to improve the well-being of children. Foundations have been endowed. Free clinics have been established to serve those families whose incomes prohibit them from securing medical services otherwise; county, city …

The Microflora Of Milk Drawn Aseptically From The U.S.A.C. Dairy Herd, Lewis W. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Early studies on the bacterial content of milk were made mainly to satisfy the interest of people who wished to determine the various materials that contained bacteris. Soon the value of bacterial counts, as an indication of the general conditions of production, of handling, and of the keeping qualities of milk, became evident and bacterial counts were used to obtain information concerning these problems. Numbers of bacteria in milk have been used also in the studies of the desirable and undesirable changes in milk.

In the last few years our citizenry has been made more conscious of the presence and …

Unfortunately, lack of funds made it impossible to continue work beyond the first season.

In 1936, the Wild Life Experiment Station at the Utah State Agricultural College appropriated a fund for a cooperative project between the Station and the Department of Botany at the same institution. This project, planned to be continued by various graduate fellows over …

The Missionary Method Of Paul As Demonstrated In The Book Of Acts, William Graumann Apr 1937

The Missionary Method Of Paul As Demonstrated In The Book Of Acts, William Graumann

Bachelor of Divinity

This topic will be discussed under a survey of the passages in the Book of Acts, showing the direct reference to methods where that is possible, and pointing out the implications where the methods are not directly stated. In connection with this we wish to make applications to our own missionary methods, which we feel should not only increase our zeal for missions, but should enable us to bring the Gospel in a more effective way to more souls.

The Concept Of God's Holiness According To The Old Testament, Victor Schulze Apr 1937

The Concept Of God's Holiness According To The Old Testament, Victor Schulze

Bachelor of Divinity

For all practical purposes there are but two ways or thinking about God. The one is based upon Divine revelation, the other spun from the speculations of men. Unprejudiced thinkers may find God's creative activity revealed in the works of nature, His righteousness in the moral law engraved into the heart of every mortal. And, finally, God is revealed in Scripture as possessing both personality and attributes.

Budgeting Problems Of A Known Family Group, Helen Wilmer Luckett Apr 1937

Budgeting Problems Of A Known Family Group, Helen Wilmer Luckett

All Theses

Granting that wherever there is money earned and money spent there will be problems, this thesis attempts to study the financial problems of a known family group. Believing that a budget is, and can be of use and that a budget produces wiser expenditure of both money and of time, this thesis, while not exhaustive, and lacking much valuable information which could be secured only by careful study, over a long period of time sets out to offer some suggestions which may point the way toward happier living for individuals as well as for the group. By the term "income" …

Alleged Anachronisms In The Pentateuch, Eugene Bertermann Apr 1937

Alleged Anachronisms In The Pentateuch, Eugene Bertermann

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of Pentateuchal criticism shows that the importance of the postmosaica has long been widely recognized. On these alone Rabbi Aben Ezra based his doubts of the integrity of the Pentateuch. In the seventeenth century Peyrerius, Spinoza, and Hobbes again advanced only the postmosnica in their attacks on the Pentateuch, although we suspect that they were motivated ultimately by more sinister motives than a desire to find out the truth in these passages of Moses. Clericus goes a step farther and acknowledges the validity of two arguments against the Pentateuch, that of style, as well as the anachronisms. But …

The Servant Of The Lord In Isaiah Fifity-Three, John Paul Uhlig Apr 1937

The Servant Of The Lord In Isaiah Fifity-Three, John Paul Uhlig

Bachelor of Divinity

Who is meant in chapter fifty-three? Critics have split into many camps. Some hold that Isaiah is speaking of all Israel; some, that he designates only the pious in Israel; while certain ones hold that the prophet is speaking of some individual. The Christian Church has, however, from the very beginning held that Isaiah is speaking of the Messiah. And that this is the true interpretation is pointed out at length in the following chapters. In one section of sixteen verses the evangelist of the Old Testament points a picture of the work of Christ. His humiliation is stressed as …

Die Selbstbezeichnung Jesu Der Menschensehn, Werner Wadewitz Apr 1937

Die Selbstbezeichnung Jesu Der Menschensehn, Werner Wadewitz

Bachelor of Divinity

The Sola Scriptura With Special Reference To The Denial By The Methodist, Quakers, And Swedenborgians, Harold Merklinger

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is once more to establish the doctrine of the Sola Scriptura, to prove that Holy Scripture alone and nothing else can be made the basis of Christian doctrine and practice. Then it will be shown how three of the eighteenth century enthusiastic bodies-the Methodists, Quakers, and Swedenborgians--deviate from this doctrine.

A Critical Analysis Of The Principal Sermon Methods In The Lutheran Church, Adolph Meyer Apr 1937

A Critical Analysis Of The Principal Sermon Methods In The Lutheran Church, Adolph Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

It goes without saying of course, that there can be no good preaching without the aid of God's Holy Spirit. At the same time we must admit that human frailties in the preacher may hinder the work of' the Spirit, and it is in the sense or overcoming such human shortcomings that we speak of "securing good preaching" and "making good sermons." The three requisites for good sermonizing are: a thorough study of' the text, a good outline, and good delivery; neglecting any one of these will result in poor preaching," Dean Fritz. In our present discussion we will confine …

Since The New York Times is universally acknowledged as having the most thorough coverage of foreign news among the daily papers of America, one inevitably takes it as a basis for comparisons and valuable information. This, coupled with the fact that the New York paper was examined first, resulted in the use of it as a gauge by which The Chicago Daily News and The Milwaukee Journal were judged.

The Age Of Louis Xiv, Floyd Ronzani Apr 1937

The Age Of Louis Xiv, Floyd Ronzani

Bachelors’ Theses

The illustrious age of Louis XIV has always been a source of vast material for those historians who take interest in dealing with it. Voluminous works have attempted to portray the many phases of human activity that is identified with the period of the Grand Monarch. From the French Court, at the time the Absolute Monarch was destined to supremacy, there came progressive measures, especially in the humanitarian spheres of Politics, Art and Literature, all of which contributed to the adventure of releasing creative ideas from the great minds of the Age. With evidence of brilliancy in the period, the …

The Life Of Samuel Mathews, Edward Jefferson Clary

Master's Theses

My purpose in writ1ng this paper came from the realization that the activities or many prominent men in the Colony during the early period of Virginia's history have been neglected by all historians. Samuel Mathews was the most prominent of these men and by looking at his life and activities, we can fully realize and appreciate the work which these men did. By looking at the life of Mathews, we can understand this whole period of Virginia …

There is a sketch of John Jacob Astor, the fur capitalist, of General William Ashley, the trader - business man, of the glamorous Manuel Lisa who pioneered the early Missouri Fur Company …

A Comparative Study Of Jane Austen And Francis Burney, Monica Rose Schumaker Apr 1937

A Comparative Study Of Jane Austen And Francis Burney, Monica Rose Schumaker

Bachelors’ Theses

The moral and intellectual background of the eighteenth century readily divides itself into two periods: the first from 1700 to 1760, is characterized as a time of unabashed indecency, political intrigue and tyranny; from 1760 to 1800 we have a period depicting a slow but clearly perceptible change in personal, social and public ideals.

A Philosophical Delineation Of Some Of The Juridical, Political, And Economic Problems Arising During The Period Of Discovery And Nationalization, Daniel Shea Apr 1937

A Philosophical Delineation Of Some Of The Juridical, Political, And Economic Problems Arising During The Period Of Discovery And Nationalization, Daniel Shea

Bachelors’ Theses

We find in Tennyson's Ulysses a prototype of the typical adventurous man of that glorious Spain of the Age of Discovery: the Spain from whose shores, not only the stern and practical Columbus set sail, but also the romantic and adventurous Spain of Ponce de Leon whose search for the elusive Fountain of Youth culminated in the discovery and exploration of the hitherto unknown Florida which now, by some strange paradox, has become the fountain of youth for modern business worried de Leons. Spain indeed, during her Golden Age, did not "rust unburnished not to shine in use". Her ships …
