Prohibition In Kansas From 1861-1881, Edna Pearl Elliott Jan 1938

Prohibition In Kansas From 1861-1881, Edna Pearl Elliott

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

During the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804, the liquor problem first entered Kansas, when two men were punished for drunkenness while on duty. From 1804 to 1848 little is to be found in records that gives any information on this question but from 1848 to 1861 it was a live issue. Laws were enacted prohibiting the sale of intoxicating beverages to the Indians, the Dram-shop Law of 1855 was passed, the Wyandotte Constitutional Convention was held, and Kansas was admitted as a state January 29, 1861, without a liquor control law in her Constitution. The demand for better liquor …

For the past twenty years the junior high schools of the United States have developed at a rapid rate, one of the alms being to discover the individual characteristics of pupils and to provide a more adequate education for each particular child in whatever grade …

Prototypes Of Meredithian Characters, Esther N. Herseth Jan 1938

Prototypes Of Meredithian Characters, Esther N. Herseth

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

"If a man's work is to be of value the best of him must be in it," wrote George Meredith to Mrs. J. B. Gilman of Concord, Massachusetts. To this credo he subscribed during this long career as a writer. The rare gifts of a richly endowed nature he brought to his work, for he was a philosopher, a poet, a humorist, and a subtle psychologist. The characters he created in his novels add much to his merit as a writer and it is with the delineation of certain of these characters and their prototypes in actual life, that I …

The History Of The Christian Churches In Marion County, Indiana, Perry W. Swann Jan 1938

The History Of The Christian Churches In Marion County, Indiana, Perry W. Swann

Graduate Thesis Collection

The significance of a written History of The Christian Churches or Churches in Marion County, Indiana has been stated on different occasions by many church members. Dr. F.D. Kershner, Dean of the College of Religion in Butler University, expressed his desire in May 1936 that some student in the College of Religion might write such a history. The importance of the work, and Dr. Kershner's suggestion have prompted me to write this dissertation.

The Relationship Between The Home Environment And Certain Phases Of Achievement, Maude M. Meriwether Jan 1938

The Relationship Between The Home Environment And Certain Phases Of Achievement, Maude M. Meriwether

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study is the outgrowth of the writer's conviction that the home environment has a great deal to do with the lack of progress among the retarded pupils and the rapid achievement of our better students. After visiting the homes of what are often termed, "the problem cases," we usually return with the feeling that with such home conditions, it is a great wonder that the pupils progress as well as they do.

The Elementary School Library And How It Functions In Indiana, Helen Estelle Fullenwider

The elementary school library is still in the pioneer stage of development in the schools of Indiana. Nevertheless some type of library service, although inadequate, is available to every school and pupil in the state. It is the purpose of this study to review the history of library service to children and to ascertain what the present types of library service to children are, and to give some information relative to the library programs that are followed by certain elementary schools in …

Reading Difficulties Of The Third Grade, Beulah Plake Jan 1938

Reading Difficulties Of The Third Grade, Beulah Plake

Graduate Thesis Collection

The problem of what to do with the poor reader and the non-reader of the third grade has disturbed the author for several years.  Solutions in the form of preventative measures beginning in the first grade, do not effect the problem immediately.  In schools where no such measures have been taken, a class of third grade poor readers and non-readers is always at hand, and something should be done with them before they leave the primary grades.

Chase And Lincoln In The Election Of 1864, Ellis H. Ewing Jan 1938

Chase And Lincoln In The Election Of 1864, Ellis H. Ewing

Graduate Thesis Collection

The election of 1864 is one of importance to students of American history because it was fraught with many dangers to the Union.  It might have been otherwise and had it been so the nation most certainly would have seen troublous times.  Just how much truth is in the expression of Lincoln's that the country chose him so as not to "swap horses in the middle of the stream" can perhaps be better understood if we have a clearer understanding of the opposition he had in 1864.

An Investigation Of The Various Interpretations Of The Song Of Songs, Gilbert L. Weidman

Graduate Thesis Collection

The study of the higher criticism of the Bible has always held great interest to the author of this thesis.  This critical approach to an understanding of each book of the Bible has caused many facts, outside of the book itself, to be found.  Armed with these facts the book itself becomes clearer and clearer as the purpose and the background of the author becomes more and more apparent.
