Silas Mitchell, Poet, Margaretha Strodthoff Jan 1940

Silas Mitchell, Poet, Margaretha Strodthoff

Bachelors’ Theses

There was a man whose name was Luke. He was not a clergyman, he was a physician. He felt, however, that he had something to say about the Master which none of those other men had said. So he wrote the gospel of Luke, which many people regard as the best book in the Bible. "Many have undertaken to set forth in order the facts about Jesus Christ and it seemed good to me also to write", he said. There was another physician and "it seemed good to him also to write". This physician was Silas Weir Mitchell. He rose …

An Attempt To Correlate Certain Physical And Chemical Properties Of Various Commercial Animal Glues, Robert C. Andersen Jan 1940

An Attempt To Correlate Certain Physical And Chemical Properties Of Various Commercial Animal Glues, Robert C. Andersen

Bachelors’ Theses

The manufacture and use of glue involves many important industries, and up to recent times we, in America, have lost much by our old "rule of thumb" and traditional methods for testing glues. In recent times much work has been done on a strictly scientific basis to explain the actions of glue from both a colloidal and a physicochemical aspect.

This thesis is concerned in particular with the possibility of coordinating the different properties exhibited by the accepted glue tests so that a definite criterion might be postulated for a high-grade animal glue. This task, however, proved extremely difficult, for …

Fitzhugh Lee, Hunter W. Martin Jan 1940

Fitzhugh Lee, Hunter W. Martin

Honors Theses

It might well note that Fitzhugh seems to be the last of his clan to demonstrate those qualities of leadership, which raise one above the common herd, for in a changing and growing America the family has today become obscure and from it has arisen no recent leader.

Lighting In The Schools Of Shelby County, Indiana, Wray Orem

Graduate Thesis Collection

Many cases of poor sight have been observed by the author during his teaching experience.  Since the classrooms in which these children studied were poorly lighted, it was though a survey of conditions in several schools would prove valuable in influencing the improvement of lighting conditions in these classrooms and in others.

A Follow-Up Study Of The Graduates Of An Orphans' Home, D. Samuel Cade

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study was made of the graduates of a semi-public school located on the grounds at the Indiana Masonic Home at Franklin, Indiana.  Almost all of the graduates are obliged to work for their living immediately after graduation and the present curriculum was arranged to meet this need.  This study was made to determine if the program has been functioning and, if not, to find out what changes should be made to make it fulfill the needed requirements.

A Survey Of The Reading Achievement In The 9b At Arsenal Technical Schools And Suggestions For A Remedial Program, Leunice H. Horne

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study evolved from the realization that there was a distressing need among high school students for tangible help in reading .

As a result of this, I enrolled in the Butler University course of Clinical Practice in Reading, under Dr . Townsend, for definite help in meeting this necessity. He inspired me to make a survey of reading difficulties and do some experimental remedial reading in the school at which I was teaching, Arsenal Technical Schools, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Public Life Of Peyton Randolph, Sidney Barney Jan 1940

Public Life Of Peyton Randolph, Sidney Barney

Honors Theses

Randolph was a man well read in law, and a person whose opinions were often asked and highly esteemed. He was a very large and inert man and this fact caused him to get less business than he could have ordinarily obtained. Randolph was well read and up to date on all political affairs. While in office, he endeavored to carry out the duties to the best of his abilities, and his work was rarely criticized. A good example of his work and philosophy can be found in the Fredericksburg Resolutions of 1775, in which he laid down the principles …

A History Of The Education Of The Chinese In Hawaii, Sylvianne Fei-Ai Li Chun Jan 1940

A History Of The Education Of The Chinese In Hawaii, Sylvianne Fei-Ai Li Chun

Honors Papers

In the transplanting of any race or people, a period of acclimatization by the process of natural or formal education must inevitably ensue if that group wishes to survive both mentally and spiritually; and in many cases physically.

In any community a human, in order to make himself agreeable and useful, must learn to cooperate with his or hers neighbors. This is usually accomplished by first learning the language of one's country of adoption, then to learn the philosophy of the inhabitants already established there, and finally to apply one's self diligently by industry and perseverance to occupation.

The Chinese …

A History Of The First Kent Baptist Church, Kent Cliffs, New York, 1810-1910, Gordon M. Christensen Jan 1940

A History Of The First Kent Baptist Church, Kent Cliffs, New York, 1810-1910, Gordon M. Christensen

Honors Theses

On a rural hillside overlooking the Boyds Corners Reservoir stands The First Kent Baptist Church. Kent Cliffs, the hamlet which it serves, is located in the western end of the town of Kent, in the approximate center of the county of Putnam, New York.

Here in the foothills of the Berkshires and fifty-two miles north of Columbus Circle in the heart of New York City, this rural church serves a community of approximately one hundred families. However, due to the influx of summer residents escaping the heat of the city, the population of Kent Cliffs more than doubles from June …

The Public Life Of Edmund Randolph, H. J. Gordon Jr. Jan 1940

The Public Life Of Edmund Randolph, H. J. Gordon Jr.

Honors Theses

In this paper I shall make no attempt to treat any portion of the private life of Mr. Randolph. His family and domestic affairs will be ignored completely. Only those portions of his life spent in the service of the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the Federal Union shall enter into the reader's ken. And that story alone is long enough and distinguished enough.

We first encounter Edmund Randolph in this paper when he enters the Continental Army as Aide-de-Camp to General Washington, and part from his as he sadly pens his resignation from the office of Secretary of State. I …
