A Semester Course In Motor Safety For California High Schools, Beverly Crocker Barron Jan 1941

A Semester Course In Motor Safety For California High Schools, Beverly Crocker Barron

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The need for developing proper habits, attitudes, and skills on the part of motorists is being continually and convincingly impressed on the public mind by the tremendous daily accident toll. Great strides have been made in engineering, both with respect to the construction of motor vehicles and the construction of highways. Traffic law enforcement agencies have become increasingly effective in recent years. Both good engineering and proper law enforcement are necessary, but to secure a very appreciable reduction in traffic accidents authorities are agreed that there must be an effective driver-education program. There have been many analysis of the causes …

The Development Of A Better Understanding By The Child Of His Natural Environmental Resources In The Rural Elementary Schools Of Sacramento County, California, Orville James Sipe Jan 1941

The Development Of A Better Understanding By The Child Of His Natural Environmental Resources In The Rural Elementary Schools Of Sacramento County, California, Orville James Sipe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was used in elementary science at the Rio Linda Union School, Sacramento Country, California as an orientation course in the seventh and eighth grades to transform school science from a mysterious abstraction into an understandable, enjoyable and useful field of knowledge that is indispensable to a child's understanding of his environment. This is of value to the child especially during his out-of-school activities, which is so well brought out by McBee:........the purpose of child study of nature is to put the child into intimate and essential contact with things of his external world, thereby developing a keen and …

The Condensation Of Phenols With Succinic And Maleic Anhydrides, Lewis L. Sisson Jan 1941

The Condensation Of Phenols With Succinic And Maleic Anhydrides, Lewis L. Sisson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The condensation of various phenols with phthalic anhydride is well known. In many cases the first preparation was made so long ago that our library contains no record of the author who first reported the condensation. A table of common indicators lists the following compounds which are the result of the condensation of phenols with phthalic anhydride: tetraiodofluoescein, dichlorofluoresfcein, b-naphtholphthalein, o-cresolphthalein, phenopthalein, and thymolphthalein. In addition to these many sulfonphthaleins are well known. These compounds are commonly prepared by the reation of the phenol with phthalic anhydride in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid at elevated temperatures, for varying lengths …

A Study Of The Present And Possible Use Of Radio In Secondary Schools In The Vicinity Of Stockton, Bobbin Cay Peck Crabbe Jan 1941

A Study Of The Present And Possible Use Of Radio In Secondary Schools In The Vicinity Of Stockton, Bobbin Cay Peck Crabbe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is worth any trouble it takes to rearrange and organize the high school or college schedule these days to enable the students to hear first hand the most important pronouncements being made by history-making leaders. The student who missed hearing Chamberlain or Hitler because he was forced by an inflexible school program to conjugate German verbs or to report on the Elizabethan period of English history, was deprived of some real education.1

In the above paragraph, John T. Studebaker, United States Commissioner of Education, asserts his belief in radio as an educational force in the United States today. Others …

The Influence Of The Book Of Common Prayer On The Prose Style Of Samuel Johnson's Prayers, Walter E. Dodds Jan 1941

The Influence Of The Book Of Common Prayer On The Prose Style Of Samuel Johnson's Prayers, Walter E. Dodds

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Somewhere is most general histories and outlines of English literature, the greatness of the King James Bible and its influence on all of English literature since 1611 have been pointed out. Unquestionably, all men of letters in the English language since that time have known of the King James Bible; and many of them may have been decidedly influenced by its tradition of cadenced prose and its prose figures.

The great deal of research would have to be done in order to establish conclusively the influence of the Prayer Book upon all writers from 1549 to the present time. If …

The Dyer Bill In Congress : A History Of The First Major Attempt To Curb Lynching In The United States By Federal Legislation, Ernest George Poletti Jan 1941

The Dyer Bill In Congress : A History Of The First Major Attempt To Curb Lynching In The United States By Federal Legislation, Ernest George Poletti

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This historical account of the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill of 1920 has been undertaken for two main purposes. The first may be termed the author's interest in lynching as an American institution. The second is a desire to portray clearly the facts concerning the first major legislative attempt to curb the practice by Federal legislation. The author has no private grudge to present and no special interests to serve on the subject. Consequently, this may be taken as an objective analysis of the arguments pro and con on a proposed legislative measure.

Since the major argumentation occurred in the House, whereas …

A Problem In Curriculum Construction : A Syllabus For The Teaching Of California History, Inez Irene Clark Jan 1941

A Problem In Curriculum Construction : A Syllabus For The Teaching Of California History, Inez Irene Clark

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis represents the close personal interest of the writer, one on which she has been reading for six years. The tragic events of the past three years have intensified the belief that if democracy ever overcomes the various "isms" which plague the world it will be because youth, through the schools, has become familiar with the ideals which have democracy birth and has developed a deep appreciation of the labor which enabled it to grow and flower. For this, a knowledge of the history of our country is not enough. Youth must know present problems and have the courage …

The Importance, Influence, And Continuity Of Bronte Juvenilia In Reference To The Mature Works, Thelma Lucile Cooley Jan 1941

The Importance, Influence, And Continuity Of Bronte Juvenilia In Reference To The Mature Works, Thelma Lucile Cooley

Graduate Thesis Collection

It is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the Bronte juvenilia only in reference to the mature works and to make clear what influences and likenesses there are between the two, and what currents of continuity exist from the childhood writing through the adult accomplisbment. In such an inquiry Charlotte Bronte, of course, provides the richest reward. For only hers and Branwell's juvenile writings remain to us, and of these two only she wrote significantly with a mature purpose. But the search is barren in none of the four: in all--Charlotte and Branwell, Emily and Anne--the investigation becomes the …

A Study In The Psychology Of Religious Sentiment, Wm. Linton Davis

Graduate Thesis Collection

Religion is a vital subject. This dissertation either makes a contribution to the study of the psychology of religion, or else it is a waste of time trifling with a very vital subject. There are various phases of the psychology of religion such as the origin of religion; the phenomena connected with conversion and religious revivals; with mysticism, spiritism, occultism, ecstasy, and prophetism; with the subconscious, faith-cure, Christian Science, etc.; the interconnection of mind and body; and the growth of the religious consciousness.

The History Of The Indiana Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Dudley Diggs Davis Jan 1941

The History Of The Indiana Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Dudley Diggs Davis

Graduate Thesis Collection

Such a study should throw light on a number of questions of social import: Can a co-operative be a success, from a purely business point of view? What is the effect of a co-operative organization on capitalist business? What effect, if any, will a co-operative have on prices? Are co-operatives subject to mushroom development and doomed to a short life? What aro the factors which lie behind the organization of a co-operative? Do co-operatives serve their members and patrons better than capitalist businesses? What are the social effects of co-operative associations? This thesis answers these questions insofar as the history …

We will make it our purpose of this thesis to approach Christian marriage from a two-fold standpoint; we will search for the New Testament concept of marriage, unhampered by set theological patterns of thought; we will approach it psychologically.

Positivism In The Works Of George Eliot, Bernice Jones Jan 1941

Positivism In The Works Of George Eliot, Bernice Jones

Graduate Thesis Collection

This paper attempts to find in the facts of George Eliot's life the evidences of positive philosophy, to trace the philosophy to its logical basis and to show its influence on her work. There are many who say such a study is useless or at best unimportant, but I do not agree. I am not attempting to "piece out" an entire philosophy by combining fragmentary allusions I have found in her work. I am not disappointed to find her thought inconsistent, or mixed, or different at one period from another. There is no philosophical system that must not admit ambiguity …
