The Development Of A Reading Readiness Program In The Kokomo Public Schools, Susan M. Baldwin Jan 1941

The Development Of A Reading Readiness Program In The Kokomo Public Schools, Susan M. Baldwin

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study presents a plan of approach to the problems that arise in the development of a reading readiness program. It outlines some of the factors that influence reading readiness: it includes a program of procedure for dealing with children who are deficient in some of the factors of reading readiness; it enumerates some of the classroom, and some of the administrative problems that arise in planning a program of this type; and it attempts to eradicate the age old fallacy that a six year old child is ready for the reading process merely because he has passed his sixth …

Some Eschatological Views Of The Fate Of The Wicked In Human History, Ormonde Stanly Brown Jan 1941

Some Eschatological Views Of The Fate Of The Wicked In Human History, Ormonde Stanly Brown

Graduate Thesis Collection

The writer expresses the hope that this treatment of an important subject may be found interesting--he knows this it can scarcely be found pleasant reading. It is our purpose to treat of the "eschatological views of the fate of the wicked"--Hell ideas entertained--"in human history". These are many. While most of them agree at some points, the range of ideas is broad, and "human history" is broad. We wish to emphasize our disinterest, for the purpose of this thesis, in eschatological views of the reward of the "good," save to say that, generally, this is but 'the other side of …

Buie's Creek Must Live : The Story Of How Dr. J. A. Campbell Built A Junior College Out Of A Small One Room School House, Paul J. Harrell Jan 1941

Buie's Creek Must Live : The Story Of How Dr. J. A. Campbell Built A Junior College Out Of A Small One Room School House, Paul J. Harrell

Honors Theses

In the sphere of education, North Carolina is perhaps the most progressive state of the South. To carry out its extensive program, it has a well equipped system of primary and secondary schools, many junior and senior colleges and a large State University.

Campbell College, one of its well known junior colleges, stands as a monument to a man who dared to "lose his life" in the service of youth. He gave of his time, talent, and money to the building of an institution where poor boys and girls might receive an education. The spirit of Dr. J.A. Campbell lives …

The James River And Kanawha Canal Company, Lucien Warner Bingham Jan 1941

The James River And Kanawha Canal Company, Lucien Warner Bingham

Honors Theses

In the early colonial days when Governor Spottswood, with his Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, ventured to cross the mountains, then a barrier between Virginia and the territory west, he realized the necessity of a water way to connect the two portions of the state so that the products of the western part could be brought to the Atlantic coast, both for the use of that portion of Virginia then being settled by the white man and for shipment to foreign countries. Yet he was so occupied with other interests that he could do nothing for the achievement of such …

The Bicycle In America To 1900, William Herbert Mariboe Jan 1941

The Bicycle In America To 1900, William Herbert Mariboe

Honors Papers

The trend in American History in recent years has been to put a much-needed emphasis on the social history of the American people. Studies have been made of their habits, customs, reform movements, economic problems--in short, anything that informs us of the way our ancestors lived and behaved has become history. With this new interest in social habits, history has ceased to be the chronicle of a series of revolutions, treaties. elections, and wars. It has become a living, breathing story of the rise and development of America and the people who inhabited it. This change is not meant to …

Validity Of Scale Analysis As A Means Of Age Determination Of The Winter Flounder, Edgar L. Arnold Jr. Jan 1941

Validity Of Scale Analysis As A Means Of Age Determination Of The Winter Flounder, Edgar L. Arnold Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

A steadily decreasing yield in the winter flounder stock has led to a series of investigations into its life history by the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service, in an attempt to ascertain the cause of its decline. Disagreement in age determination by scale analysis has been responsible for much delay in solving an urgent problem. To devise an accurate method for determining age by scale reading, a series of specimens of gradually increasing sizes, beginning with those known to be of the currently-spawned stock, were selected and their scales subjected to detailed study.

Results showed that age can definitely be …

Studies On The Quantitative Analysis Of Rhenium And Its Occurrence In The Products Of Molybdenite Processing, Walter Keith Dean Jan 1941

Studies On The Quantitative Analysis Of Rhenium And Its Occurrence In The Products Of Molybdenite Processing, Walter Keith Dean

Masters Theses

"There is at the present time no commercially developed source of the metal rhenium in the United States. Since this metal is known to exist in molybdenite, it was felt that a study of the products of the metallurgical processing of this mineral might reveal a source of rhenium that could e developed. The Climax Molybdenum Co. provided a number of samples from their smelter at Langloth, Pennsylvania. Although an improved method for the quantitative estimation of rhenium was recently published, its accuracy was not high and the procedure exacting and time-consuming. These combined factors led to the selection of …

The Mineral Association In Manganese Ores, With Particular Reference To The Phosphorus-Bearing Minerals And Their Removal By Leaching Methods, Daniel Chalmers Mclean Jan 1941

The Mineral Association In Manganese Ores, With Particular Reference To The Phosphorus-Bearing Minerals And Their Removal By Leaching Methods, Daniel Chalmers Mclean

Masters Theses

"The United States Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Rolla has recently been conducting an intensive investigation of the amenability of Arkansas red ores to enrichment by standard ore dressing methods. These Arkansas ores are low grade with the estimated reserves running into several million tons. They can be concentrated to meet all Grade B ferromanganese specifications - with the exception of that of the phosphorus content, but in all cases the phosphorus is so high as to make the ore worthless under present conditions. This condition suggested the problem of trying to discover a method by which the phosphorus …

Conodonts From The Marathon Basin, Brewster County, Texas, Roy William Graves Jr. Jan 1941

Conodonts From The Marathon Basin, Brewster County, Texas, Roy William Graves Jr.

Masters Theses

"Conodonts were discovered in the limestones of the Marathon region in the Big Bend country, Brewster County, Texas, as a result of field work during the summer of 1939. This was not the first known occurrence of these fossils from this region, however, as King earlier mentioned the occurrence of conodonts in siliceous shales of Devonian age. The discovery of conodonts in the Ordovician and Pennsylvanian limestones of the area had its inception in the attempt to determine whether the Dimple limestone (lower Pennsylvanian) or Maravillas limestone (upper Ordovician) was involved in a fault that was being mapped. These limestones …

The Individual And The Kingdom Of God, Frederic A. Chandler Jan 1941

The Individual And The Kingdom Of God, Frederic A. Chandler

Graduate Thesis Collection

The Kingdom of God as depicted by Jesus Christ is the only human society that will effectually eliminate the conflict between the individual and society.

To prove this thesis, the succeeding chapter's will proceed as the nature of the subject dictates. First, as the individual human being is the fixed and unchangeable factor in this problem, the first step will be to give an adequate definition of a person. Next, since his conflict with his fellows reaches the very essence of his being when it touches his moral nature, morality will be defined and it will be shown what that …
