A Survey Of The Incidence Of Trichinosis In Northern Utah, As Indicated By The Intradermal Skin Test And Post-Mortem Examinations Of Diaphragms, H. W. Merrill

Biology

Definition and History. Trichinella spiralis, the causative organism in trichinosis, and commonly termed the "trichina worm," was first known by its encysted larval stage in the muscles of man as early as 1821, when it was noted by Tiedemann in Germany, and again in 1828, when it was seen by Peacock of London. Mr. Paget, who was a student at the Saint Bartholomew Hospital in London, noted whitish specks in the muscles of an Italian, aged 45, who had died at the hospital. Suspecting these specks to be produced by a minute internal parasite, Mr. Paget gave portions of …

Concrete And Cement Surface Coatings, Gabriel J. Popovich May 1941

Concrete And Cement Surface Coatings, Gabriel J. Popovich

Bachelors’ Theses

It has been with difficulty that precise information of any kind regarding the surface coating of concrete and cement finishes had been found. In fact, there was limited information to be found after 1930. Having but a short time to conduct any research, it was impossible to delve too deeply into this branch of the thesis. It is sincerely hoped that in the very near future a more thorough, extensive and comprehensive study can be made on this subject. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the best composition of concrete and the best surface coating for it and …

Bachelors’ Theses

The scientific name first applied to the thirteen-lined ground squirrel was Scuirus tridecemlineatus by Mitchell in 1821. The same species has also been referred to as Spermophilus tridecemlineatus. At the present time it is recognized as belonging to the genus Cltellus and the species is divided into geographical races. Most of the middle western part of North America is the natural habitat of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel — Cltellus tridecemlineatus tridecemlineatus. So greatly have they increased with the expansion of cultivated areas and so vast is their destruction to growing crops that they have created a situation that must be …

Studies Of The Histology Of The Digestive System Of The Reptiles, Dorothy Ruth Marie Kaduck

Bachelors’ Theses

The normal histology or the Vertebrates as a group is not as wall known as is generally supposed, and in many cases we find that our meagre knowledge rests upon uncertain investigations and vague generalized studies. Among all of the classes· of Vertebrates, with the possible exception of the Pisces, the Reptilia represent the major gap in our information.

An Experimental Study Of The Destruction Distillation Of Corn Cobs, Wendall Lee Perry May 1941

An Experimental Study Of The Destruction Distillation Of Corn Cobs, Wendall Lee Perry

Bachelors’ Theses

The utilization of waste products is daily becoming more and more important. It has always been a big problem of industry to utilize its waste material; and as a result, limitless effort has been spent in the attempt to stress utility and economy in all forms of production. Under ordinary circumstances, the utilization of many waste products has been disregarded because of the large expense involved; but in critical times such as the present, expense becomes a secondary issue, and the actual production of necessary material becomes foremost. It is true that the waste connected with large industries is very …

The Effect Of Time, Temperature, And Pressure On The Hydrogenation Of A Mixture Of Linoleic And Oleic Acids, Gordon S. Wepfer May 1941

The Effect Of Time, Temperature, And Pressure On The Hydrogenation Of A Mixture Of Linoleic And Oleic Acids, Gordon S. Wepfer

Bachelors’ Theses

During the past few years interest and experimentation in the field of hydrogenation of different fats and oils has increased enormously. Strides made in the oil-hardening industry have surpassed all expectations. These advances were brought about by simplifying old methods and creating new ones. The probable reasons for this impetus in research is due to the fact that unexpected uses for hydrogenated oils and fats have been found and will continue to be found. With the increase in use of these products the market for them will also increase. Recently, the resin industries have produced useful products by condensing pure …

A Problem In Reflection Of Light, M. Imogene Palen May 1941

A Problem In Reflection Of Light, M. Imogene Palen

Bachelors’ Theses

A circular mirror has a. ray of light from a source at one point on the circumference which is reflected twice. The first ray will by extension, if necessary, intersect the second reflected ray. Increasing the angle of reflection by revolving the source of light so that the first ray falls on all points of the circumference gives a locus, to the successive points made by the intersection of the first ray and the second reflected ray. The problem of this thesis is to picture the locus and find its equation.

The Study Of The Physical And Chemical Factors Influencing The Plankton In The Menomonee River, Hermoise Katz May 1941

The Study Of The Physical And Chemical Factors Influencing The Plankton In The Menomonee River, Hermoise Katz

Bachelors’ Theses

The reasons for the choice of this study are several in number. Previous collecting trips had shown to some extent the relatively high productivity of organic life in this stream. From superficial external evidence, however, it seemed likely that the stream should contain some degree of pollution. The contradictory nature of these two observations called for furthur investigation. Then too, the nearness of the location of the Menomonee River to Marquette University contributed to the facility of such an investigation, and also pointed to the possibility that such a survey might be of some use to the Department of Biology. …

A Study Of Resins From Carbohydrates, Edward F. Sullivan May 1941

A Study Of Resins From Carbohydrates, Edward F. Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

The availability of large amounts of carbohydrates, and the need in the past years of larger markets for the available supplies of sugar have lead a number of sugar companies to investigate the possibilities of synthetic resins from carbohydrates. Although in the last ten or twelve years, a number of steps have been taken in the investigation of sugar resins, the information available has been restricted to a few patents. Consequently, information on the chemistry of the problem has been neglected. Thus, this work, for the most part, covers partially the possibilities of producing alkyd resins from saccharides, as well …

Solubilities Of Glycerides, Alois L. Wagner May 1941

Solubilities Of Glycerides, Alois L. Wagner

Bachelors’ Theses

The mono, di, and triglycerides have many uses in industry; each of these glycerides has a specific purpose, if not directly, then as an intermediary compound .in the synthesis of a glycerol derivative. In order to obtain the highest efficiency in a synthesis, or as a matter of fact, in any phase of chemistry, the production of a homogeneous result demands the use of pure uniform constituents.

The Effects Of A Carbohydrate Deficient Diet On The Mouse, Walter Rudolph Sala May 1941

The Effects Of A Carbohydrate Deficient Diet On The Mouse, Walter Rudolph Sala

The majority of this work has been carried on with the rat as the subject, and resulting external physical variations as the experimental aim. The writer used the mouse as his subject, but, since no literature was available concerning this animal, a few similar experiments performed on the rat will be cited.

The Preparation Of Some Typical Organoboron Compounds, Glen David Barbaras May 1941

The Preparation Of Some Typical Organoboron Compounds, Glen David Barbaras

Bachelors’ Theses

Organoboron compounds have long been known, the first being prepared by Frankland as early as 1862. No particular interest in these compounds was aroused, how ever, because of the difficulty and expense of their preparation as well as their extreme instability. From time to time further attempts at their preparation were made and a few reactions were ob served. With the rise of modern electronic theories of chemical combination, however, organoboron compounds were discovered to exhibit properties and undergo reactions which would substantiate these theories. Consequently, since 1936 possibly over a hundred of these compounds of many different types have …

The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle May 1941

The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle

Bachelors’ Theses

Very little, if any, work has been done on the thorax musculature in · the larvae stage of insects. The work that has been done has been confined mostly to the muscles of the abdominal region. From this work it has been found that extraordinary differences in muscle pattern occur often between larvae and adult stages of the same species. Since the muscles of all insects are more or less comparatively the same, what is true of one .will be generally true of another. There may be slight variations found between the abdominal segments and head segments but these differences …
