Aspects Of The Oecumenical Dilemna, William G. Baker Jan 1948

Aspects Of The Oecumenical Dilemna, William G. Baker

Graduate Thesis Collection

Views of the oecumenical movement range from an enthusiastic, if often shallow optimism, to a cautious, and sometimes bitter, suspicion. The thesis which I venture to offer is that only a radical emproach to oecumenicity can enable us to understand what is happening in this moment of Church history. Such a radical approach demands that we seek to understand the nature of human existence, the nature of the Church, and the nature of unitive activity within the Church.

Recreation In The Church : An Analysis And A Prospectus, Lawton Delmar Harris Jan 1948

Recreation In The Church : An Analysis And A Prospectus, Lawton Delmar Harris

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In a measure, the thesis seeks to bring together a consideration of the program and problems from both the secular and religious viewpoints. The two are based upon the same psychological needs of humanity, but the two fields have become isolated in their fundamental approaches. The secular books barely mention the church and its programs. They have a tendency to regard the church as a "has-been.. in the field. They imply that the church should conduct "religious" services and leave recreation to the agencies. To this the writer cannot give agreement. On the other hand, many of the books written …

Speech Attributes Of Thomas Starr King, Elton F. Martin Jan 1948

Speech Attributes Of Thomas Starr King, Elton F. Martin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Suspended in the State Capitol at Sacramento is a portrait of a man under whose name appears the following inscription, "The man whose matchless oratory saved California to the Union". The same name identifies a statue standing in the Congressional Hall of Fame, placed there by the State of California in memory of one of two Californians "most illustrious for their historic renown". The life and speeches of a man who achieved such renown and who earned such an immortal epitaph to his eloquence should be worthy of study by a speech student. The purpose of this thesis is to …

American Public Opinion Relating To The Roosevelt Court Proposal Of 1937, Alfred Irving Melcer Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Following his election to the office of President of the United States, in 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt began his attempt to overcome the economic difficulties caused by the depression of 1929. His program for recovery included the enactment by Congress of many new pieces of legistlation. A great amount of this legislation was ruled out by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional. Subsequently, the President on February 5, 1937, presented a proposal to alter the court system of the United States. This proposal brought forth a surge of public opinion throughout the nation. Sharp divisions of opinion occurred concerning the merits …

A Correlative Study Of The Anti-Literal In Modern Art, Music, And Literature, Alden Hervey Smith Jan 1948

A Correlative Study Of The Anti-Literal In Modern Art, Music, And Literature, Alden Hervey Smith

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study is concerned with the understanding as a way to enjoyment of the anti-literal in modern art.1 The work of art is regarded as the locus of various cultural factors--a live product of the vital energies of its age and itself a source as well as a reflection. The analysis of these cultural factors lays no claim to completeness. It seeks merely to indicate in simple language the layman can understand, conditions, forces, and stimuli in the artist's milieu which are potential motivations of his artistic idiom2 and through the examination of those influential factors, to try …

The Development Of Professional Education For Social Work At The Raymond A. Kent School Of Social Work Of The University Of Louisville, 1918-1946., Maurice L. Kohnhorst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It would be impossible to single out any individual or group and give credit tor the development of the Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work. There are names which bring to mind real achievement and tremendous effort in the field which they had chosen and to which they had dedicated their service; names which lived through years of discouragement and disillusionment; names which perhaps have been forgotten with the passage of time but played vital roles in different periods of the development of the school. This, therefore, is not an account of things happening, but in reality, an account …
