Master's Theses

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese made their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, and the United States was at war. This marked the second time within a quarter of a century, and the fifth time in the history of the University, that war clouds hovered over the United States. During World War I, the University vacated its new campus (the present site) in favor of the United States War Department. The campus and all of the buildings were used for hospital purposes. Thousands of soldiers, wounded on the Western Front, were hospitalized in the buildings on the new campus. These …

The Application Of Qualitative Inorganic Macro Procedures And Reagents To Spot Test Analysis, John Albert Stich Aug 1950

The Application Of Qualitative Inorganic Macro Procedures And Reagents To Spot Test Analysis, John Albert Stich

Bachelors’ Theses

Qualitative inorganic analysis is that branch of applied chemistry which has to do with the systematic detection or identification, and separation of the various metals and groups of elements which make up inorganic compounds. The indentification is made on the basis of precipitates and the color changes thereof, which result when a specific reagent is added to a solution of the sample. As opposed to quantitative analysis, measurability is not the essential factor, but it must be possible to observe the reaction easily and indubitably. It is not necessary for the material being tested for to be converted completely to …

A Survey Of The Leisure Time Activities Of The Negro Physical Education Teachers Of Houston, Texas, Bernice Josephine Green

All Theses

The old adage, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy has long since become an accepted and confirmed statement among people of the world.

Although at all periods of history there have been persons who ap~reciated the true value of recreation, popular opinion has frequently been lacking in sympathy toward those who employ leisure for other than strictly utilitarian purposes. This has been true of our O\ffl country as well as of others. It has not always been considered respectable for American youth to have spare time or to use it as they please. Educational Implication Of The Incidence Of Negro Participation In Producer Consumer Cooperatives, Larrie Brown Cash

All Theses

Economics has been defined as the science that deals with human want and their satisfaction. These wants vary according to the cultural milieu of a distinctive human group. The satisfaction of wants merges from a recognition of needs, together with some well-defined scheme of meeting those needs. The present economy in America has evolved through several stages, three of which have definite implications for this study. These stages are: (1) that of rugged individualism (2) that of capitalism and (3) that of producer-consumer cooperation. The two basic economic concepts, production, and consumption were in the early days of our country, …

Determining Reading Readiness Of All First Grade Negro Children Entering Longview Public Schools, Era Marie Moseley Aug 1950

Determining Reading Readiness Of All First Grade Negro Children Entering Longview Public Schools, Era Marie Moseley

All Theses

A moot question with the general public is whether or not the child should be taught to read immediately upon entering school, or whether he should be given a period to develop reading readiness.

When a custom is fully entrenched in usage among a people, any attempt at change is combated. The change must permeate the thinking of the people as slowly and cautiously as the general idea was accepted. In Longview, the traditional idea remains that the chronological age of six is the correct time for a child to enter school, and that the chief function of grade one …
