Spermatogenesis In The Sand Crab Emerita Analoga, Mario Martin Menesini Jan 1954

Spermatogenesis In The Sand Crab Emerita Analoga, Mario Martin Menesini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Crustacean spermatozoa are among the most peculiarly modified germ cells in the animal kingdom. Many of their striking cytological specializations may be observed in the sperm cells or Emerita analoga, the so-called sand crab. This animal has been used by the writer for studies on spermatogenesis and on spermatozoan behavior during the summer or 1951, 1952, and 1953 at the Pacific Marine Station.

Reorganization Of The Elementary Schools In The Linden Union High School District, William Richard Johnsen Jan 1954

Reorganization Of The Elementary Schools In The Linden Union High School District, William Richard Johnsen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Should the elementary schools of the Linden Union High School District consolidate into larger administrative units in order to improve educational services?

To determine if a plane of reorganization is feasible answers will be sought for the following questions: (1) What is the financial ability of the existing school districts?; (2) Are there inequalities in the economic burden of support?; (3) Are there educational inequalities?; (4) Is widespread transportation feasible?; (5) What are the population trends?; (6) What barriers affect district reorganization?; (7) Where are the community interest centers?; (8) What reorganization is educationally sound?

The Contributions Of John Swett To Free Public Education In California, Will Shippee Cluff Jr. Jan 1954

The Contributions Of John Swett To Free Public Education In California, Will Shippee Cluff Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

To no one man can go the full credit for establishing and building the free public schools of California, any more than can any single individual be given full credit in any complex community undertaking. But in any communal activity, one man usually stands out, and in the case of the schools of California, John Swett is that individual.

Much has been written about Swett, the man, but little has been written about his contributions to the school structure of his adopted state. The latter is the problem with which this paper deals. In view of an ever increasing interest …

A Study Of The Effects Of Aureomycin Upon The Microflora Of The Ovine Rumen, Milton Allison Jan 1954

A Study Of The Effects Of Aureomycin Upon The Microflora Of The Ovine Rumen, Milton Allison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Growth stimulation in domestic animals due to dietary supplementations of antibiotics has received a great deal of attention in the last few years. Moore and co-workers in 1946 (35) observed that the addition of streptomycin to the diet of chicks led to increased growth responses and in 1948 Harned et al. (17) administered aureomycin to chicks and he also noted an increased growth rate. Little significance was attached to these discoveries and the present interest in antibiotics as feed supplements is the result of investigations by Stokstad and co-workers in 1949 (40) with cultures of Streptomyces griseus and Streptomyces aureofaciens …

Problem Areas Of Beginning Teachers Of Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, Wendell Deboer Jan 1954

Problem Areas Of Beginning Teachers Of Vocational Agriculture In South Dakota, Wendell Deboer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A beginning teacher in vocational agriculture is confronted by many problems when he begins his teaching career. Some of these problems are temporary and are mastered by the individual in a short time. Some are not immediate, but appear as the teacher gains more experience. These, also, may be mastered in a short period of time. Still other problems arise that become ever-present ones and, in spite of all the initiative and experience the teacher can muster, they will still confront him. The writer, like all vocational agriculture teachers, is concerned with these problems. He has completed four years of …

Effect Of Alfalfa Meal And Brewers Dried Yeast On Digestibility Of Different Qualities Of Prairie Hay By Cattle And Sheep, Leo Dubose Jan 1954

Effect Of Alfalfa Meal And Brewers Dried Yeast On Digestibility Of Different Qualities Of Prairie Hay By Cattle And Sheep, Leo Dubose

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Roughages are one of the most important feeding stuffs, and a large quantity is produced each year that has a little market value except as a feed for ruminants. Cattle and sheep are able to consume and utilize efficiently large quantities of roughages when they are supplied with an adequate amount of nutrients essential for the animal and for an active bacterial population in the rumen. However, roughages vary considerably in their nutrient content and, thus, in their value as a feed, depending upon many factors, some of which are discussed in the review of literature. It is important that …

Relation Of Rate Of Gain To Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle, Leo E. Lucas Jan 1954

Relation Of Rate Of Gain To Feed Efficiency In Beef Cattle, Leo E. Lucas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between rate and efficiency of gain, and the environmental factors affecting them, are of major importance in a selection program. Selection within recent years has tended to be mainly for improvement of breed type. As a result of this selection, improvement in type has taken place in the beef breeds, but a comparable improvement in performance does not seem to have occurred. It then seems likely that is breeders in the future intend to improve the performance of the beef breeds, they cannot do it by selection for type alone. A breeding program based on selection for performance, …

Methods Of Storing Alfalfa For Fattening Cattle, Leonard Herman Timmerman Jan 1954

Methods Of Storing Alfalfa For Fattening Cattle, Leonard Herman Timmerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cattle feeders and ranchers of South Dakota winter and fatten a great number of cattle on harvested grasses and legumes. The forages are stored for winter feeding both as hay and as silage. Alfalfa is one of the important crops in both the eastern and western portions of the state. The use of alfalfa, particularly as silage, in cattle feeding is increasing. This has raised many questions regarding the efficiency of alfalfa silage in relation to hay. A number of experiments have been conducted at various stations in which the feeding value of grass and/or legume silage has been compared …

The Effectiveness Of College Home Economics For Family Living, Imogene Van Overschelde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Education in general purposes to widen one’s horizon and to give a deeper understanding and enrichment of what has already been experienced and to provide new experiences. College education should be so organized that it can be used later. Curriculum planning and evaluation has been an important part of the education program. Many colleges and universities have launched self-evaluation studies in an effort to appraise and improve their home economics program, that it may be a very real preparation for home and family living. Spafford states: The achieving of a satisfying and functioning philosophy of life with emphasis of personal …

Chemical Weed Control In Shelterbelts, Elvin K. Ferrell Jan 1954

Chemical Weed Control In Shelterbelts, Elvin K. Ferrell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most important single factor in successful shelter-belt establishment in the Northern Great Plains is elimination of weed and grass competition. While removal if competing vegetation between the tree rows can readily be accomplished with machinery, removal of such vegetation in the tree rows is a different problem. Hand hoeing is effective, but involves a great deal of time and labor. No mechanical means of removing competing vegetation from the row has proven entirely satisfactory.

A Study Of The Administrative Problems Related To The Scheduling Of Regular Classes And Extracurricular Activities In Ninety-Two High Schools In Eastern South Dakota, G. Wesley Peppers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Each school in South Dakota and for that matter each school in the United States has its particular problems in the administration, organization, operation, and supervision of each school. Many of the problems are similar or related while others pertain only to local situations. Large schools may have entirely different problems from very small schools yet some of their problems may be the same. Schools may have similar problems depending upon such things as size, geographical location, prosperity of the community, industry of the community, nationwide economic conditions, and races or nationalities in the community. The administration, supervision, organization, and …

Temperature Conditions Existing In A Diffusion Type Cloud Chamber, Vance D. Vandervelde Jan 1954

Temperature Conditions Existing In A Diffusion Type Cloud Chamber, Vance D. Vandervelde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many types of detectors of radioactive rays, such as Geiger Counters, ionization chambers, photographic emulsions, electroscopes, and cloud chambers. Many of these give only information such as the amount of radiation or the minimum energy of the rays because the information is registered as a change in voltage or a “count”. Outstanding among the different kinds of detectors is the type commonly called “cloud chambers”. In a cloud chamber the path of the ray* can actually be seen and photographed, its radius of curvature in an electric or magnetic field can be measured, the amount of ionization can …

A Survey Of The High School Drop-Outs At The Standing Rock Community High School, Fort Yates, North Dakota During A Four-Year Period 1950-54, Donald Arthur Weston Jan 1954

A Survey Of The High School Drop-Outs At The Standing Rock Community High School, Fort Yates, North Dakota During A Four-Year Period 1950-54, Donald Arthur Weston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The less talented pupils are being eliminated from the schools and caused to meet adult problems without adequate preparation due to the unflexible definition entertained of what constitutes an education. Efforts to achieve a high level of scholarship have been causing schools to be more selective than they should according to the spirit of the public school laws. The discouraged low-ability pupil tends to drop out of school at a lower grade level than would have been necessary providing the school programs were more adaptable to the individual differences of pupils. Schools have had a tendency to attempt to prepare …

A Comparison Of Volumes And Types Of Carrier, Rate And Method Of Application Of Several 2, 4-D Estems On Wheat, Keith E. Wallace Jan 1954

A Comparison Of Volumes And Types Of Carrier, Rate And Method Of Application Of Several 2, 4-D Estems On Wheat, Keith E. Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the summer of 1953, 168,000 acres of small grain were sprayed with 2.4-D by airplane in South Dakota. Of this amount 120,000 acres were wheat. Approximately the same number of acres were sprayed in the previous years. Several cases of damage to crops following serial application of 2.4-D have been reported. In most cases, the damage resulted from an application of an ester of 2.4-D in oil. Since very little research data concerning such applications were available, it seemed that present recommendations should be reviewed critically in order to determine if they are adapted to serial application. The purpose …
