A Study Of The Significance Of Certain Factors Of The Home Environment As Related To The Reading Success Of Students In The First Grade In An Eastern Virginia School, Elaine Brinsfield Hughes
Master's Theses
In the American culture, learning to read holds as great a significance as learning to talk. It is generally expected that every child will be ready to read in the first grade of elementary school.
Reading readiness means different things to different people. Some regard it only as an expression of interest or purpose. Others describe it with emphasis upon either general or physical maturation . Still others believe that readiness depends upon information or abilities developed during educational experiences.
The Purpose of the study: Reading instruction in American schools proceeds on the thesis that there are common …
The Effect Of Drive Level On Performing A Complex Task, Patricia C. Lucky
The Effect Of Drive Level On Performing A Complex Task, Patricia C. Lucky
Master's Theses
Buchwald and Yamaguchi (1955) used a reversal learning situation to test the hypothesis that increasing drive will impair performance when the strength of the correct response is relatively weak. Thirty-six rats on 1 1/2 and 20 1/2 hours water deprivation were trained in a single unit T maze with 4 trials per day. The Ss were randomly assigned to 4 groups: high-high, high-low, low-low, and low-high, "low" and "high" referring to drive level for origin l and reversal learning. When a criterion of 10 correct runs out of 12 was reached, they were trained to reverse the direction of the …
A Survey Of The Leave-Of-Absence Policies Of The State Of Virginia, It's Local School Divisions, And Other States, John Richard Kopko
A Survey Of The Leave-Of-Absence Policies Of The State Of Virginia, It's Local School Divisions, And Other States, John Richard Kopko
Master's Theses
When a teacher accepts a position, he agrees to be with his puils each day that school is in session. Yet at times, it is justifiable that a teacher be absent from his regular teaching duties. Hence, it is important that a provision for teacher leaves-of-absence be included in the personnel policies of every school system.
It is legitimate to ask whether the leaves-of-absence provisions provided by the State of Virginia and its counties and cities are adequate. This thesis is intended to compare the policies of the State and its counties and cities with the policies of the other …

Seasonal Study Of Mites On Deer Mice (Peromyscus Maniculatus) In A Chaparral Community, Donald B. Ash
Theses and Dissertations
The parasitic mites on mammals living in the chaparral community of Utah are practically unknown ecologically. Keegan (1953) was the first to publish on parasitic mites from Utah. He listed mites of 12 species and 9 genera from Tooele and Juab counties from hosts which included one Peromyscus truei, five P. crinitus, and 20 P. maniculatus. Brennan and Beck (1955) published on the chiggers of Utah and included a key to 38 species. Allred (1954, 1956, 1957, 1958) studied the geographical distribution, seasonal occurrence, and biology of mites found on mice of the genus Peromyscus in Utah.

Techniques In Evaluating Instructional Television, James E. Rediske
Techniques In Evaluating Instructional Television, James E. Rediske
Graduate Student Research Papers
Experiments have shown that television's potential as an important educational resource and tool is unlimited and, as yet, only the surface has been scratched. In fact, the realm of interaction has broadened through classroom viewing to the extent that a new and complete evaluation of the relationship between the student and teacher must be made.
The purpose of this paper will be to (1) identify and clarify the questions: who should evaluate, why should evaluation take place, how often should evaluation be conducted, and how should evaluation be achieved; and (2) provide sample questionnaire material from which evaluations could be …

The Relationship Of Citrus By-Products To The Cattle Industry In Florida, Roland Lloyd Dewing
The Relationship Of Citrus By-Products To The Cattle Industry In Florida, Roland Lloyd Dewing
Graduate Student Research Papers
For many years Florida has led the United States in citrus production and since 1946 has been the source of great quantities of citrus wastes as a result of the production of frozen citrus concentrates. Conversion of these wastes into feed for the rapidly growing cattle industry has provided an effective and profitable way to dispose of these wastes. Since Florida does not produce large amounts of grain or other feed concentrates, the development of citrus feeds has been fortunate both for the citrus and cattle industries in the state. The situation is so fortunate that authoritative sources have maintained …
Labor Turnover As A Factor In Personnel Evaluation, James D. Taylor
Labor Turnover As A Factor In Personnel Evaluation, James D. Taylor
Masters Theses
Abstract
Management needs to know how it is doing in the field of personnel management, just as it does in the area of financial management. In order to determine this, an evaluation of the personnel program is necessary. When completed, such an evaluation provides management with the information necessary to effectively plan and budget the personnel program.
The personnel audit audit has been used as a means of evaluating the personnel program. The audit can cover all of the various aspects of the personnel program or it can be restricted to only one of the personnel functions. In the past …
Behavioral Interactions In A Fixed Aggregation Of Bobwhites, Jack Pierce
Behavioral Interactions In A Fixed Aggregation Of Bobwhites, Jack Pierce
Masters Theses
Introduction
Many observations have been made on the behavior in the field of the bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and of other gallinaceous birds. Stoddard (1950) has described in some detail various aspects of bobwhite behavior. Stokes (1963) conducted a laboratory study on the agonistic and sexual behavior of the chukar partridge. No behavioral studies, to the writer's knowledge, however, have been conducted on bobwhites under controlled environmental conditions. The birds used in the present study were housed in individual cages and were arranged in an artificially fixed aggregation (Fig. 1). The birds were maintained in this condition through the experimental period …

Absent Fathers And Problem Behavior, A Comparison Of Children From Broken And Unbroken Homes, Earl Walter Morris
Masters Theses
Introduction
This study is an attempt to explore several aspects of the influence of the family upon the occurrence of problem behavior among children.1 Essentially it deals with a comparison of the occurrence of problem behavior among two groups of children: (1) children in the homes where the father is absent because of death, divorce, separation or desertion; and (2) children in homes where both parents are present.
In the past the "broken home" has received a great deal of attention is delinquency research. The physical presence of absence of a parent has not been found to be highly …
Some Aspects Of Change In New England Puritanism, Genevieve Patricia Piley
Some Aspects Of Change In New England Puritanism, Genevieve Patricia Piley
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine three factors which contributed to the decline of New England Puritanism in the last half of the seventeenth century. Toleration, the Half-Way Covenant, and materialism were chosen because they violated three of the fundamentals of Puritanism. The principle of religious toleration denied the obligation of the church and the civil authorities to preserve the purity of the church through the ruthless extirpation of dissent and heresy. The Half-Way Covenant, by granting baptism to the non-elect, destroyed the exclusive church with its exacting conditions for membership. Materialism perverted the Calvinistic concept of calling …

It is characterized by having long awn that bend at maturity, and anthers which are about four times longer than A. trachycaulum. Artificial hybrids are intermediate between parents in awn and anther lengths and have 21 chromosomes. A natural population in Utah was found consisting of A. trachycaulum, A. spicatum, plants resembling the artificial hybrids, …
The Teaching Of Succession Through The Use Of Pond Infusion Cultures, James E. Cole
The Teaching Of Succession Through The Use Of Pond Infusion Cultures, James E. Cole
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
The approach to teaching biology for general education is significant. In a course of this nature, the learning of biological principles should be of primary concern. It is hoped that such principles then will lend themselves to the understanding and use of the scientific approach to everyday happenings. To do this, however, requires that the teacher use the inductive method for developing an understanding of the principles, and the deductive method for applying them.
Planners of these basic biology courses attempt to define areas of real concern and interest to students. Having defined these areas, the planners …
The Effect Of Renal Artery Constriction On The Course Of Pregnancy In The Laboratory Rat, Julie Jones Medlin
The Effect Of Renal Artery Constriction On The Course Of Pregnancy In The Laboratory Rat, Julie Jones Medlin
Masters Theses
Introduction
Goldblatt and his associates (1934) were the first to show that persistent arterial hypertension could be produced by renal ischemia. They produced renal ischemia by two procedures which involved reduction of the blood supply to one or both kidneys by means of adjustable silver clamps and removal of the non-ischemic kidney where only one kidney was made ischemic. In one procedure the clamps were placed directly on the renal arteries. The second procedure produced renal ischemia indirectly by constriction of the abdominal aorta above and below the site of the origin of both renal arteries (1939). The adjustable silver …

Microenvironmental Conditions Of The Day Resting Places Of Cottontail Rabbits, Orin Gelderloos
Masters Theses
This investigation was concerned with the microenvironment of the daytime resting places of cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) in southwestern Michigan. Many studies have been made of the habitat (Friley, 1955), cover (Hendrickson, 1938; Leopold, 1942; Linduska, 1947), food (Trippensee, 1938; Dice, 1945), and home ranges (Haugen, 1942) of cottontail rabbits. The purpose of this investigation was to search for possible correlations between various physical factors and the daytime activity and resting places of cottontails.

An Investigation Of The Influence Of The Suprapharyngeal Ganglion Upon Oxygen Consumption Of Resting Lumbrious Terrestris, William E. Elzinga
Masters Theses
Introduction
Because cephalization and centralization of the earthworm are more pronounced than in less complex forms, it is a relatively simple operation to remove a portion of the central nervous system to investigate its functions. However, the extripation of various parts of the central nervous system of the earthworm has been the subject of only a few research papers. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the influence of extripation of the suprapharyngeal ganglia on the oxygen uptake of the resting earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris.
Of the studies concerned with the influence of extirpation of some parts of the …
