Graduate Recital, Arlan Randall Baird May 1964

Graduate Recital, Arlan Randall Baird

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

When the author commenced his Y~ster ' s program in the summer of 1959, it was decided that a lecture-recital project would be more desirable in his case than the alternative procedure of doing original research and writing a thesis . The writer has never regretted the decision, but it must be confessed he felt more than once that a thesis would have been the easier project. (Naturally, those who have written theses do not usually agree with this statement.) In fulfillment of all expectations, and despite the difficulties encountered, or rather because of them, the performance of the recital …

The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen May 1964

The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hospital personnel are becoming more aware of the fact that hospitalization is traumatic to the emotional life of the young child. Since eating habits and emotions are so closely allied, it is probable that the young child's eating pattern will be affected during hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the reaction of children between the ages of one through four to food during the first three days of hospitalization at the White Memorial Hospital. The method chosen to obtain this information was the descriptive survey. The tools used were a checklist for the researcher to record her …

Correlation Of The Maternal Interest And Attitude Toward Breast Feeding Of Senior Students In A Selected School Of Nursing, Bonnie Boyts Wikens May 1964

Correlation Of The Maternal Interest And Attitude Toward Breast Feeding Of Senior Students In A Selected School Of Nursing, Bonnie Boyts Wikens

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive survey study was carried out at a selected baccalaureate school of nursing in an effort to find out if the maternal interest of senior students of nursing would affect their attitudes towards breast feeding. It was hypothesized that a student who scored high on a maternal interest would have a positive attitude towards breast feeding and conversely a student who scored low on the maternal interest scale would have a negative attitude towards breast feeding. Maternal interest was measured by the use of twelve questions adapted from a questionnaire formulated by D. M. Levy, a prominent psychiatrist. Attitude …

The Incidence Of Dental Caries, Periapical Root Resorption, And Alveolar Bone Loss Among The Navajo Indians Of Monument Valley, Utah, Ronald J. Fasano May 1964

The Incidence Of Dental Caries, Periapical Root Resorption, And Alveolar Bone Loss Among The Navajo Indians Of Monument Valley, Utah, Ronald J. Fasano

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In a pilot anthropometric study of 52 Navajo Indians of Monument Valley, Utah, the incidence of dental caries, permanent tooth periapical root resorption, and alveolar bone loss was assessed. The relationship of tooth malpositioning to the specific parameter was subsequently determined.

The sample was divided into arbitrary age groups.

Periapical roentgenograms were taken of each subject and were used in the assessment of dental caries, periapical root resorption, and alveolar bone loss. Data from a specially prepared examination sheet augmented the findings from the roentgenograms.

Tooth malpositioning and arch relationships were determined from the study casts. Occlusion was then classified. …

A Cephalometric Evaluation Of The Navajo Indian, Robert L. Cole

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A random sampling of 54 Navajo Indians was examined and a selective group of 20 subjects presenting harmonious facial profiles and good occlusions were taken from this random sampling for specific comparison with Caucasian and other ethnic groups.

The methods used in this study are as follows: Plaster casts of Maxillary and Mandibular dental arches, profile photographs and lateral cephalometric X-rays. The cephalometric X-rays were traced in the standard manner on both Downs' and Riedel's analyses. The mean values for the Navajo group were compared with the mean values established for Caucasians by Downs and Riedel. The comparison was subjected …

A History Of Timber Resource Use In The Development Of Cache Valley, Utah, Douglas M. Bird May 1964

A History Of Timber Resource Use In The Development Of Cache Valley, Utah, Douglas M. Bird

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has long been realized that the forests and forest products contributed very significantly toward the economic development of the Western United States. However, the extent of this contribution over a relatively small area has never been fully analyzed. Therein lies the primary justification for this paper. The author hopes that the readers of this paper will, through their reading, gain some appreciation of the major role the forest and its products played in the development of the western community.

Because of some important social differences between the area described in this paper and other western communities, the history herein …

Parent Education In A Cooperative Nursery School, Owen William Cahoon May 1964

Parent Education In A Cooperative Nursery School, Owen William Cahoon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parent education has existed for as long as one parent has attempted to help another, and for as long as we have records. To what extent it has served its purpose has not been fully established. Only the future will fully tell how successful parent education programs have been among those who participated in them, because the final measure of success of a parent education program is the degree to which it contributes to effective family relationships and to favorable growth and development of children in the home.

Parent education sometimes is defined as the use of educational techniques to …

Consumer Credit Knowledge And Credit Use In A Selected Group Of Married Student Households At Utah State University, Kay Daun P. Edwards May 1964

Consumer Credit Knowledge And Credit Use In A Selected Group Of Married Student Households At Utah State University, Kay Daun P. Edwards

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Consumer credit has become an area of major importance in the financial planning of most, if not all, families in the United States. In absolute amounts, total consumer credit extended had increased more than 11 times, from $5,665 million to $63,164 million, since the end of World War II to 1962; and total installment credit had increased more than 19 times. During the same period disposable personal income had grown only about 2½ times (15).

On The Behavioral Responses Of Free Uinta Ground Squirrels To Trapping, David F. Balph May 1964

On The Behavioral Responses Of Free Uinta Ground Squirrels To Trapping, David F. Balph

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Biologists often trap animals to obtain information on them. If trapping is selective toward some animals, the information may be inaccurate. Most mammalogists know or suspect that their trapping techniques (reviewed by Hayne, 1949; and Stickel, 1954) contain sources of bias. Since trapping remains the only feasible way to obtain information on many animals, researchers have tried to discover sources of sampling error and refine their techniques. They have found that one major source of difficulty may lie in the behavior of animals. Individual animals seem to respond differently to trapping, both initially and through learning (Geis, 1955; Crowcroft and …

Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration In Central Iraq, Ala H. Al-Barrak May 1964

Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration In Central Iraq, Ala H. Al-Barrak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The principal objectives of this study were to compare several formulas for estimating pan evaporation and evapotranspiration and to derive new formulas or modify existing formulas that will better fit the data for central Iraq. Computed evaporation was compared with measured evaporation by determining the differences and the ratios. The pan evaporation formulas were also compared by expressing them all in the form
Ev = K CRCTCWCHCDTCSCM

Three pan evaporation formulas were modified. For the Meyer and Utah formulas, the constants were changed and expressions were derived …

Some Effects Of Accumulated Radium On The Productivity Of Algae, Joseph W. Angelovic May 1964

Some Effects Of Accumulated Radium On The Productivity Of Algae, Joseph W. Angelovic

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ionizing radiation from natural occurring radionuclides and cosmic rays has always been a part of man's environment, but at such low levels as to have had virtually no effect. However, with the advent of the atomic age and the advancement of nuclear technology, background activity has measurably increased all over the world. Fallout from nuclear weapons testing, wastes from nuclear reactors, and wastes from the milling of radioactive ores have all contributed to this increase. Due to this increase, many ecosystems and their individual components are now subjected to radiation levels as high as a million times natural background. What …

Simplified Approach To The Problem Of Stability Of Soil Slopes Under Horizontal Earthquake And Pore Pressure, Dalim Kumar Majumdar May 1964

Simplified Approach To The Problem Of Stability Of Soil Slopes Under Horizontal Earthquake And Pore Pressure, Dalim Kumar Majumdar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A problem that has confronted engineers for a great number of years is that of determining the stability of soil slopes. Many factors introduce complications into stability analysis. Most embankments contain heterogeneous soils, often of several types. This and other complications usually necessitate the use of a simplified cross section. At the same time, it is often necessary to adopt simplified average soil characteristics which represent actual characteristics as best as possible. Those steps which bear on the choice of the simplified section and the simplified soil characteristics are always important in stability analysis work. These steps are independent, however, …

Point Flow Measurements In Irrigation Furrows, David Ernest Mortin May 1964

Point Flow Measurements In Irrigation Furrows, David Ernest Mortin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A new flow measurement concept is needed to facilitate the study of intake characteristics of the soil under furrow irrigation. Knowledge of the flow rate at various points throughout the furrow length is required but measurement must be made without altering the normal flow regime. Conventional water measuring devices such as weirs, orifices or flumes which require a loss of head in their operation, are usually unsatisfactory because to create a measuring head would alter the normal flow depth upstream thus changing the intake pattern.

The purpose of this study is to develop a simple, reliable method of measuring small …

School District Reorganization And Consolidation In Cache County, Utah, Grant Richard Bagley May 1964

School District Reorganization And Consolidation In Cache County, Utah, Grant Richard Bagley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A historical study of school organization and school district consolidation enables both educators and lay citizens to have a better understanding and appreciation of schools as they are today. By studying past developments of a given institution, one can better evaluate current requirements and affect future changes as the needs arise.

The Cache County School System as presently constituted has evolved over the years from a cluster of small independent village schools with separate boards of education to a highly centralized system with one board of education and consolidated schools. The purpose of this study is to trace and analyze …

Effects Of Temperature On Moisture Conductivity In Unsaturated Soil, Richard O'Bannon Meeuwig

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water moves in soil in response to potential gradients. The basic equation for this movement is the generalized v=-K▽Φ in which v is volume of water passing through a unit area in unit time, K is the conductivity coefficient, ▽, is the gradient operator (vector), and ▽Φ is the potential gradient.

Influence Of Fertilizer Treatment On The Response Of Sugar Beet Yield To Moisture, Samad Farzanfar May 1964

Influence Of Fertilizer Treatment On The Response Of Sugar Beet Yield To Moisture, Samad Farzanfar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many factors that influence the growth and quality of sugar beets behave in one way under one set of conditions and in quite another under other conditions. Consequently, these factors should be considered together under a dynamic situation to find their interrelations and their influence on sugar beet yield.

This study is a statistical analysis of the interaction of fertilizer and soil moisture potential with the yield of sugar beets grown in a crop rotation under different regimes of irrigation conducted over a period of seven years.

The data are available for the years 1949 through 1956, from an intensive …

Economic Evaluation Of Stockwater Development Practices On Mountain Cattle Ranches In Utah, Robert Max Nielson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The state of Utah is comprised of 52.7 million acres of land of which 86 percent is covered by range vegetation. This rangeland provides part or all of the feed for approximately 430,000 head of cattle and 1,300,000 sheep. Rangeland products constitute from 33 to 40 percent of the agriculture income within the Intermountain Region. Utah's vast rangeland area represents a basic resource of considerable importance to her economy.

International Cooperation In The Economic Development Of Latin America, Antonella Picchio May 1964

International Cooperation In The Economic Development Of Latin America, Antonella Picchio

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As an Italian, with less than a year in the Western Hemisphere, I now find myself with a “mixed” personality. As someone else expressed it, "I am physically Italian, Latin American by adoption, and gaily American." This may well be a good combination for writing a thesis on Latin America. My "Latin blood" may help me in understanding the mentality of the people of Latin America, while my studies in Italy--a country with a long experience as an underdeveloped country--may contribute toward a personal understanding of the problems of poverty, social injustice, and political instability. Three months of experience in …

An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn May 1964

An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the time of Don Hernando Cortez, livestock has been one of America's greatest industries. The cattle in Cortez's time were Moorish stock which had been bred for centuries in the Andalusian Plains of Spain.

Following this beginning in about 1521, cattle were bred and brought from South America to Mexico. By 1583 the first herds were grazing in what is now Texas.

This was the beginning of the livestock industry and with it carne the endless search for fertile valleys, waterholes, feed in the winter, long trail drives, cattle rustlers, railroads, range wars, and a great American institution, The …

Temperature Dependence Of Soil-Moisture Potential, Jacob Willem Kijne May 1964

Temperature Dependence Of Soil-Moisture Potential, Jacob Willem Kijne

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Teachers have noticed that children draw only those objects which they know by name. Doubtless the adult has a similar tendency, exemplified by the researcher, to limit his observations or to relate them to that which can be expressed in the terminology of an existing or newly developed theory. In this thesis the data obtained from studies of the temperature and pressure dependence of the relative vapor pressure over moist soil samples are analyzed by a thermodynamic approach. Not all of the results can be explained completely by means of this tool. Natural systems, such as a moist soil, are …
