Resurrecting The Romani Presence - Restoring Cultural Memory In Triana Seville, Jesus A. Sanchez May 2026

Resurrecting The Romani Presence - Restoring Cultural Memory In Triana Seville, Jesus A. Sanchez

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

In an era of placeless architecture and fragmented civic identity, this thesis investigates how design can cultivate belonging through cultural and historical meaning. It examines the disjunction between spatial function and symbolic resonance in contemporary civic institutions, proposing a framework for architectural memory — a system of strategies that translate narrative, context, and collective history into spatial experience. Through precedent studies and design research, the project explores how rootedness can be achieved through materiality, sequencing, and light, transforming civic space into a vessel of memory and participation. The design proposal, a Romani Museum in Triana, Seville, situates architecture within …

Rebel Commons: Reimagining Commoning, Connectivity, And Civic Space Through The 2025 Gen-Z Uprisings, Corbin Austin May 2026

Rebel Commons: Reimagining Commoning, Connectivity, And Civic Space Through The 2025 Gen-Z Uprisings, Corbin Austin

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

In September 2025, Nepal’s Generation Z, those born roughly between 1997 and 2012, mobilized one of the largest horizontally organized youth rebellions in South Asia, using digital platforms to coordinate mass protests against corruption, unemployment, restricted opportunity, and failures of public governance. These grievances are exacerbated by Nepal’s unique geographical conditions, leading to severe physical disconnection due to the country’s extremely mountainous terrain. In tandem with this physical fragmentation, the nation has experienced years of political instability following the 1996 to 2006 civil war. As a result of these factors, young people face limited mobility, deteriorating infrastructure, and weak institutional …

Sanctuary Uprising: Spiritual Reclaiming Of A Former Immigration Detention Center Site In Laredo, Texas, Antonio J. Labra Alvarez May 2026

Sanctuary Uprising: Spiritual Reclaiming Of A Former Immigration Detention Center Site In Laredo, Texas, Antonio J. Labra Alvarez

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis operates at the intersection of

architectural memory, spatial justice, and speculative

futurity. It asks not only how buildings harm, but how

the ground they occupy can be reclaimed — not

erased, but transformed. Rather than demolishing

the evidence of detention, the project proposes a

descent: a subterranean sanctuary that borrows the

geometry of confinement and inverts its intention,

turning surveillance corridors into processional

thresholds, cell dimensions into the measure of

sacred space, and the enforced stillness of detention

into a choreography of ritual and rest.

The site is Webb County Detention Center, Rio

Bravo, Laredo, Texas — a …

Constructing Atmosphere The Use Of Light And Water As The Generators Of Architectural Atmosphere, Victoria A. Cioffi May 2026

Constructing Atmosphere The Use Of Light And Water As The Generators Of Architectural Atmosphere, Victoria A. Cioffi

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

What if the spaces we inhabit are no longer felt, only seen? In contemporary architecture, many buildings are designed for visual impact rather than human experience, often resulting in environments that feel emotionally detached. This thesis asks a central question: have buildings lost their soul? It proposes that atmosphere, understood as the sensory and emotional quality of space, is essential to restoring meaning and connection within architecture.

Drawing from the work of Peter Zumthor, this research explores how architecture can move beyond visual form to engage the body through environmental conditions. The study focuses on light, shadow, and water as …

Ourhaus: Supportive Housing And Cultural Campus For Aging Survivors Of The Hiv/Aids Epidemic In Atlanta, Blake A. Archbold

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis proposes a supportive housing and cultural campus for aging survivors of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Atlanta. As advances in medicine have transformed HIV from a terminal illness into a chronic condition, a growing population of long-term survivors is now reaching older adulthood while facing increased rates of chronic illness, housing insecurity, stigma, and social isolation. Atlanta, one of the nation’s historic HIV epicenters, has seen a significant rise in older adults living with HIV while simultaneously experiencing declines in HIV housing support infrastructure.

Located along the Atlanta BeltLine, the project combines permanent supportive housing with community and public-facing …

Reclaiming Civic Space: Designing A Public Space For Political Engagement, Joiya Nguyen May 2026

Reclaiming Civic Space: Designing A Public Space For Political Engagement, Joiya Nguyen

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

According to a 2018 survey of the United States, loneliness has reached generational highs, particularly among those who substitute social media for in-person social relationships — from dating to political engagement. Despite this knowledge, digital interaction continues to displace physical community. The root of this turn to the digital is the lack of adequate public spaces. This project investigates how the built environment can reclaim civic spaces by offering meaningful, in-person alternatives to digital interaction.

Drawing on Henri Lefebvre's Right to the City and Anthony Vidler's writing on occupied spaces, alongside an analysis of historical civic precedents, this research maps …

In Vitro Modeling Of Macrophage And Cd8+ T Cell Activation: Evaluating Immortalized Cell Lines For Use In Undergraduate Immunology Laboratories, Lucy Groothuis May 2026

In Vitro Modeling Of Macrophage And Cd8+ T Cell Activation: Evaluating Immortalized Cell Lines For Use In Undergraduate Immunology Laboratories, Lucy Groothuis

Masters Theses

The immune system is a complex, highly coordinated network of cells and signaling molecules that protects the body from infection and disease. Immunology is therefore a fundamental component of undergraduate education for students pursuing careers in medicine and biomedical research. Despite its importance, many undergraduate immunology courses lack a laboratory component. To address this gap, we developed an open-access immunology laboratory manual and evaluated its ability to generate meaningful data using primary murine cells and commercially available cell lines. Given the cost and logistical constraints of using mouse models in an undergraduate laboratory setting, we evaluated whether immortalized cell lines …

The Use Of Tactile Stimulations To Mitigate Somatic Anxiety Responses: A Pilot Study, Abigail C. Robbins May 2026

The Use Of Tactile Stimulations To Mitigate Somatic Anxiety Responses: A Pilot Study, Abigail C. Robbins

Masters Theses

Anxiety is the body’s response to detected danger or stress. Physiological responses include shallow breathing, increased heart rate, sweating, shaking, and muscle tension. Roughly 33.7% of the population experiences anxiety, with approximately 40 million adults in the United States being affected by the disorder. Anxiety can create severe personal, social, and economic burdens. Traditional treatments of anxiety disorders such as medication and psychotherapy can be effective, but present multiple barriers such as cost, accessibility, and side effects. As a result, there is a growing industry for non-invasive, low-cost solutions that can help individuals regulate their physiological anxiety responses and reduce …

Experimental Measurements Of The Forces Acting On A Submerged Beam Using High-Speed Videography, Madelyn Burrell May 2026

Experimental Measurements Of The Forces Acting On A Submerged Beam Using High-Speed Videography, Madelyn Burrell

Masters Theses

The interaction of structures and fluids is highly relevant in many fields but difficult to accurately and reliably characterize. This study demonstrates a novel method of simplifying such problems by analyzing the structural deformations directly, without needing to explicitly solve for the fluid aspect. Six cantilever beams of varying properties were submerged in still water and released from an initial deflection at the free end: the cases consisted of three beam shapes (one of uniform width, one with a narrower free end, and one with a wider free end), with an end mass attached or detached. High-speed videography was utilized …

Refining Bone Consolidator Identification In Historical And Modern Museum Contexts, Natalie M. Eves May 2026

Refining Bone Consolidator Identification In Historical And Modern Museum Contexts, Natalie M. Eves

Honors Theses

The use of consolidants, such as polymers and adhesives, has historically been common in archaeology and museum curation for the preservation and reconstruction of skeletal remains. However, many of these materials were applied without detailed documentation, creating challenges for collections management and compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Consolidants may also interfere with scientific analyses by altering the elemental and molecular composition of bone. Despite these concerns, there is currently no standardized method for identifying consolidants applied to skeletal remains. This study evaluates whether Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and visual …

Subaltern Alternatives: Reclaiming Agency Through Spatial Articulation, Nadirah Ali May 2026

Subaltern Alternatives: Reclaiming Agency Through Spatial Articulation, Nadirah Ali

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The concept of the subaltern, introduced by Antonio Gramsci to describe populations excluded from political, social, and economic power while still being used to sustain dominant systems. Today, migrant construction workers often occupy this condition: essential to urban growth, yet denied dignity, visibility, and participation in the cities they build. Their housing is frequently reduced to an instrument of control—spaces designed to contain labor rather than support life. This thesis proposes an architectural alternative.

The project examines contemporary cases of labor exploitation in the United States, Qatar, and Singapore, where migrant workers have faced unsafe conditions, wage theft, …

Learned Resilience, Rebeca Ortiz May 2026

Learned Resilience, Rebeca Ortiz

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Haiti faces a complex web of environmental and social pressures, from deforestation and soil erosion to climate instability and strained institutional support. While regenerative farming and community-led development are often discussed in the context of sustainability, architecture is frequently relegated to the background, treated as a secondary or isolated fix rather than a primary driver of change. My work challenges this by positioning architecture as the central, regenerative framework that weaves together food production, collective learning, and civic life. I see the built environment not just as shelter, but as an active agent for resilience and a sense of belonging. …

Myocardin-Dependent Regulation Of Adam12 And Adam19 Promotes Fibronectin Fibrillogenesis During Pleural Fibrosis, Uday Siva Naga Sankar Allamneni May 2026

Myocardin-Dependent Regulation Of Adam12 And Adam19 Promotes Fibronectin Fibrillogenesis During Pleural Fibrosis, Uday Siva Naga Sankar Allamneni

Biotechnology Theses

Pleural fibrosis involves excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition driven by chronic injury and inflammation. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) induces mesothelial–mesenchymal transition (MesoMT), promoting a myofibroblast phenotype. Our laboratory identified myocardin (Myocd), a transcriptional coactivator, as a key mediator of MesoMT that regulates ECM-remodeling proteases. RNA-seq and qPCR analyses showed that ADAM12 and ADAM19 are upregulated by TGF-β but suppressed by Myocd knockdown in Human pleural mesothelial and IPF-derived cells. Silencing ADAM12 reduced fibrotic markers, including fibronectin and smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), whereas ADAM19 showed relatively minor effects. ADAM12 knockdown also impaired fibronectin fibrillogenesis and insoluble matrix assembly, as confirmed by …

“Am I Truly Getting Prepared To Be A Good Teacher?”: Pre-Service Teachers’ Barriers In The Absence Of An Education Living Learning Community (Llc), Daisy Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

“A teacher is an important element of an education system because the impact of the teachers on the students and education programs is known much higher than other elements” (Kadi et al., 2015, p. 1). This study seeks to further understanding of the challenges pre-service teacher experience through their collegiate careers, and how institutions can implement resources such as Living-learning communities in their college campus residence halls to support their students and contribute to the long-term success of teachers post college. A quantitative study was done surveying pre-service teachers at Rowan University to gather knowledge about their different experiences with …

The Gatekeepers: School Personnel And The Identification Of Twice-Exceptional Black Girls, Stephanie L. Addison-Fontaine May 2026

The Gatekeepers: School Personnel And The Identification Of Twice-Exceptional Black Girls, Stephanie L. Addison-Fontaine

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative research study examined the discourse of school personnel in the twice-exceptional (2E; Kaufman, 2018) student identification process (Gilman & Peters, 2018). It used disability critical race studies (DisCrit; Annamma et al., 2016) to investigate how educators’ discourse signals the inclusion or exclusion of 2E Black girls. Critical discourse analysis (Gee, 2014) was used to understand the ways their intersectional identities of race, ability, and gender impact their identification in schools. It highlighted the identification barriers for 2E Black girls and conceptualized a normative 2E construct (N.A.T.E.) aligned with the dominant institutional discourse of twice-exceptionality. Policy shifts are recommended …

Fault Location In Dc Microgrids Using Traveling Waves, Sajay Krishnan Paruthiyil May 2026

Fault Location In Dc Microgrids Using Traveling Waves, Sajay Krishnan Paruthiyil

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In DC power systems, rapid fault location is crucial for maintaining reliable operation, particularly with the prevalence of DC-DC converters. This study investigates fault location techniques in DC systems utilizing Traveling Waves (TWs). Following data normalization, multi-resolution analysis employs discrete wavelet transform to capture high-frequency patterns of TW's wavelet coefficients. Parseval's theorem is utilized to quantify the energy of these coefficients. First, a curve-fitting technique is employed to estimate fault locations in DC microgrids. Then, two transfer learning approaches are proposed: first approach integrates Parseval energy curves into a Gaussian process estimator, while second employs feedforward neural network for fault …
