Bringing The Focus Of Curriculum Back To The Students And What Does This Look Like For Teachers, Gabriella Anaya Jun 2026

Bringing The Focus Of Curriculum Back To The Students And What Does This Look Like For Teachers, Gabriella Anaya

University Honors Theses

As a future ELA teacher, I was curious about how the books students read influence their learning. Specifically, I wondered: How does letting students choose their own books impact reading comprehension outcomes? Studies suggest that the reading materials were not necessarily what we should be focusing on, rather the teaching methodology and how it implements reading materials. The key methodology that contributed to reading comprehension improvement was instilling motivation in students by fostering student autonomy over their own learning in the classroom. This is the main idea in which my research concentrates on connecting research on reading comprehension with practical …

Moving Beyond Traditional Cost Containment For Glp-1 Coverage Within Oregon's Proposed Universal Health Plan, Manoj Rajesh Jun 2026

Moving Beyond Traditional Cost Containment For Glp-1 Coverage Within Oregon's Proposed Universal Health Plan, Manoj Rajesh

University Honors Theses

In 2022, Oregon voters passed Measure 111, constitutionally mandating access to affordable health care. As the Universal Health Plan Governance Board (UHPGB) designs the state's proposed single-payer system, it faces an unprecedented financial vulnerability: the clinical demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists. These high-cost, indefinite-use medications for obesity and metabolic syndrome threaten to overwhelm fixed public budgets. Historically, both the Oregon Health Plan's Medicaid framework and commercial private insurers have relied on static cost-containment models—categorical exclusions, step therapy, and aggressive utilization management—that achieve short-term fiscal solvency at the expense of comprehensive preventative care. This thesis argues that to fulfill the mandate …

Campus Community Vibes: How Queer Asian American Students Navigate Their Higher Education Experiences, Nathan Nguyễn Jun 2026

Campus Community Vibes: How Queer Asian American Students Navigate Their Higher Education Experiences, Nathan Nguyễn

Dissertations

Misconceptions and stereotypes about Asian American college students include the belief that they are innately academically successful and that if Asian American students struggle, their challenges do not compare to their Black/African American, Hispanic/Latine, or Native American/Indigenous counterparts (Museus & Buenavista, 2016). Contemporaneous to this, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) college students experience interrogation, exploration, and various levels of support regarding their sexuality and/or gender identity. At this intersection, queer Asian American students must navigate campus settings that can enhance or diminish their agency for different facets of their identities (Crenshaw, 1991; Iftikar & Museus, 2018; Ray, 2019). …

Exercise Therapy For Mood Disorders In Retiring/Former Athletes, Christian Antos Jun 2026

Exercise Therapy For Mood Disorders In Retiring/Former Athletes, Christian Antos

Dissertations

This dissertation examined the potential integration of exercise therapy and psychotherapy as a treatment approach for mood-related difficulties experienced by former elite athletes during the transition out of competitive sport. Retirement from athletics is often associated with significant biopsychosocial challenges, including disruptions in identity, healthy routines, social support, and emotional well-being. Existing literature suggests that exercise may serve as an effective adjunctive intervention for improving mood and overall psychological functioning, though limited research has explored its application among retiring athletes within psychotherapeutic contexts. This literature review synthesized current research related to athletic retirement, neurobiological mechanisms associated with physical activity, and …

The School To Prison Pipeline From The Inside Out: Survivor Narraitves, Nina M. Koufalias Jun 2026

The School To Prison Pipeline From The Inside Out: Survivor Narraitves, Nina M. Koufalias

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the lived experiences of two Latino men who traversed the school-to-prison pipeline in the 1980s. The purpose of this study is to investigate how intersecting systems of racism, ableism, poverty, and exclusionary school practices shaped their educational trajectories and contributed to their incarceration. Three overarching research questions guide this inquiry: (1) What can be learned from the stories of two formerly incarcerated relatives that sheds light on how the school-to-prison pipeline is lived? (2) How do their narratives illustrate the impacts of exclusionary discipline policies, such as zero-tolerance, on educational opportunities and life outcomes? (3) How does …

The Mystical Soundscape And The Functions Of Commentaries On Ibn Al-Fāriḍ’S (D. 632/1235) Naẓm Al-Sulūk, Sherine Mohsen Aboulwafa Jun 2026

The Mystical Soundscape And The Functions Of Commentaries On Ibn Al-Fāriḍ’S (D. 632/1235) Naẓm Al-Sulūk, Sherine Mohsen Aboulwafa

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines Ibn al-Fāriḍ’s Naẓm al-Sulūk and its earliest commentaries by al-Farghānī (d. 700/1300) and al-Tilimsānī (d. 690/1291) through the analytical framework of the mystical soundscape. Rather than treating the poem and its commentaries as static texts, it argues that meaning in this corpus emerges as an experiential and perceptual event sustained through sound, silence, and reception. The mystical soundscape is conceptualized as comprising two interrelated domains: a silent soundscape, formed through reading, memory, imagination, and conceptual engagement; and an audible soundscape, formed through recitation, pronunciation, rhythm, and communal audition. These domains are linked by the experience of bewilderment …

The Predictive Roles Of Teacher-Student Relationship Qualities In The Implementation Of Restorative Practices In Elementary Schools, Farid Johnson Jun 2026

The Predictive Roles Of Teacher-Student Relationship Qualities In The Implementation Of Restorative Practices In Elementary Schools, Farid Johnson

Education Doctoral

Although restorative practices have been broadly embraced as equitable alternatives to punitive discipline in K–12 education, their effectiveness remains underexamined, particularly regarding how implementation success is influenced by the quality of student–teacher relationships. The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental study was to examine the extent to which three teacher-reported qualities of the student–teacher relationship (i.e., closeness, conflict, and dependency) predicted the implementation of two types of restorative practices (relationship building and community development, and restorative responses to conflict) in elementary schools. Guided by social capital theory and restorative justice theory, the study surveyed 72 certified elementary teachers in New York …

Stakeholder Engagement In Workforce Strategic Planning: A Multi-Case Study Of Community Colleges, Jennifer Gilbert Wakefield Jun 2026

Stakeholder Engagement In Workforce Strategic Planning: A Multi-Case Study Of Community Colleges, Jennifer Gilbert Wakefield

Education Doctoral

Strategic planning is an important framework for community colleges to prioritize educational outcomes with institutional mission and vision statements. Research from the past 10 years shows that plans are created, yet implementation is often lacking. Though workforce development is viewed as to updating curriculum and training needs for in-demand industry skills, limited empirical evidence demonstrates commitment to workforce development programs, nor any devotion to workforce strategic planning.

The purpose of this study was to learn what strategies community college leadership is utilizing to implement, assess, and evaluate their strategic plans for prioritizing sustainable noncredit workforce education and training. Guided by …

C*-Extreme Quantum Instruments; Completion And Disintegration Of Completely Positive Maps, Arghya Chongdar Jun 2026

C*-Extreme Quantum Instruments; Completion And Disintegration Of Completely Positive Maps, Arghya Chongdar

Doctoral Theses

This thesis develops a comprehensive operator-algebraic framework for the study of completely positive (CP) instruments, with contributions spanning convexity theory, integration theory, completion problems, and disintegration theory. We begin by laying the foundational groundwork in the theory of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, introducing key structures such as CP maps, positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), and CP instruments, along with their dilation-theoretic properties. Pure and decomposable instruments are characterized via minimal bi-dilations, and CP instruments are realized as bivariate maps, providing a rigorous quantum analogue of classical joint measures. The thesis then investigates convexity-theoretic aspects of instruments. A structural characterization of …

African American women leaders in Fortune 500 companies experience persistent challenges of subtle yet pervasive systems of discrimination in the form of microaggressions that cause negative impacts to their psychological well-being, workplace performance, and career advancement. These women exhibit incredible resilience that enable them to thrive at work, mitigate mental health challenges, and navigate their careers successfully. However, unlike people who fall into either a racial minority group or a gender minority group, African American women experience compounded effects of microaggressions due to the intersection of their race and gender. As a result of microaggressions, these women experience impacts to …

Strategies For Extending The Service Life Of Prestressed Concrete I-Shaped Beams, Sanjoy Kumar Bhowmik Jun 2026

Strategies For Extending The Service Life Of Prestressed Concrete I-Shaped Beams, Sanjoy Kumar Bhowmik

Dissertations

Prestressed concrete (PSC) I-shaped beams are widely used in bridge construction because of their structural efficiency and durability. The service life of these beams is reduced and the maintenance frequency is increased due to the distress during fabrication and subsequent deterioration. Although several mitigation strategies have been proposed and implemented, beam end cracking during fabrication remains a major concern. The causes and mitigation strategies for beam end cracking have been studied for decades, but there have been no comprehensive studies utilizing beam end strains during fabrication and lifting at prefabrication plants under normal operational conditions. Moreover, existing maintenance and repair …

An Attachment Perspective For Help-Seeking Intentions Among Emerging Adult Women Child Sexual Abuse Survivors, Dominique Giroux Jun 2026

An Attachment Perspective For Help-Seeking Intentions Among Emerging Adult Women Child Sexual Abuse Survivors, Dominique Giroux

Dissertations

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an adverse childhood experience and a global health issue. Approximately one in four girls encounter CSA per year. Research evidence suggests approximately 50% of CSA survivors encounter sexual revictimization during adulthood (Walker & Wamser-Nanney, 2023), but formal help and intervention can mitigate further psychosocial harm experienced by CSA survivors (Widom et al., 2008). Attachment theory has provided a theoretical framework for identifying individuals at risk for revictimization and help-seeking patterns, such that individuals who have insecure attachment styles report more revictimization frequency, but the literature is mixed about attachment styles and help-seeking (Brenner et al., …

Deployment-Aware Deep Learning For Computer Vision: Efficient Architectures From 3d Segmentation To Mixed Reality, Bahar Uddin Mahmud Jun 2026

Deployment-Aware Deep Learning For Computer Vision: Efficient Architectures From 3d Segmentation To Mixed Reality, Bahar Uddin Mahmud

Dissertations

Deep learning has become the dominant approach for solving vision-centric problems; however, its successful deployment in real-world applications remains limited by high computational cost, data dependency, and insufficient integration with practical and human-centered environments. While state-of-the art deep learning models often achieve impressive performance in controlled settings, they frequently fail to generalize or operate efficiently under deployment constraints such as limited resources, complex data modalities, and real-time interaction requirements. These limitations motivate the need for a deployment-oriented deep learning framework that balances accuracy, efficiency, and practical usability.

This dissertation investigates the design and deployment of efficient deep learning architectures for …

Attachment Style, The Working Alliance, And Client Self-Disclosure In Individual Psychotherapy, Jennifer S. Baar Jun 2026

Attachment Style, The Working Alliance, And Client Self-Disclosure In Individual Psychotherapy, Jennifer S. Baar

Dissertations

Client self-disclosure is a core component of the psychotherapy process and increased levels of client self-disclosure have been shown to predict more positive therapeutic outcomes (Pattee & Farber, 2008; Sloan & Kahn, 2005). Similarly, the working alliance and attachment are constructs that have been studied in psychotherapy research and are consistently associated with therapeutic outcomes. Specifically, stronger working alliance ratings and higher levels of secure attachment have been found to predict more positive therapy outcomes (e.g., Flückiger et al., 2018; Mallinckrodt et al., 2005; Sauer et al., 2010). As these three constructs have been found to influence psychotherapy outcomes, the …

Reduced Product Type Monoid-Module Extensions, Darryl Jent Jun 2026

Reduced Product Type Monoid-Module Extensions, Darryl Jent

Dissertations

In 1955, I. M. James introduced the James Construction, a free topological monoid that models the loops on the suspension of a given space. In 1969, S. Y. Husseini generalized this idea to RPT monoids: topological monoids with a free-like monoid structure that can be used to model a broader class of loop spaces. In order to prove that these topological monoids are models of loop spaces, both I. M. James and S. Y. Husseini constructed contractible spaces on which these topological monoids act. We define a topological module as a space equipped with an action by a topological monoid. …

From Total Domination To Graph Coloring, Sawyer Isaac Osborn Jun 2026

From Total Domination To Graph Coloring, Sawyer Isaac Osborn

Dissertations

A question involving a chess piece called a prince on the 8×8 chessboard leads to a concept in graph theory involving total domination. We say a vertex u in a graph G totally dominates a vertex v if u is adjacent to v. A subset S of the vertex set of a graph G is a total dominating set for G if every vertex in G is totally dominated by at least one vertex of S. If S is a total dominating set of G, then σS(v) denotes the number of …
