Third Space Thinking In The Secondary School Writing Center: A Model For A More Just Approach To Education, Annika Peacock Jun 2026

Third Space Thinking In The Secondary School Writing Center: A Model For A More Just Approach To Education, Annika Peacock

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the ways that Homi Bhabha’s postcolonial Third Space theory aligns with writing centers, and more specifically writing centers in secondary schools. The thesis introduces Third Space theory in six characteristics and the ways that writing centers are Third Spaces. Next, through content analysis, 25 mission statements from secondary school writing centers are qualitatively coded to reveal what writing centers prioritize and understand about their center. The thesis finishes with a framework called Third Space thinking, providing examples of how writing centers as Third Spaces can help to develop a more just and equitable educational experience for students …

Reproducing And Analyzing The “Lost In The Middle” And “The Power Of Noise” Phenomenon In Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Kousik Samanta Jun 2026

Reproducing And Analyzing The “Lost In The Middle” And “The Power Of Noise” Phenomenon In Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Kousik Samanta

Master’s Dissertations

Retrieval-Augmented Generation has become the way to improve Large Language Models. They help with problems like knowledge and hallucinations. Recent studies show that these models still have limitations. One big problem is the “Lost in the Middle” phenomenon. Models can’t access information in the middle of contexts properly. Another counterintuitive observation is the “Power of Noise” paradigm, which suggests adding unrelated documents can actually make the generation better. We know these happen in extractive QA tasks, but we don’t know if they happen in tasks that need complex reasoning. This dissertation looks into how position and noise affect Long-Form Question …

Learning To See Lesions, Not Skin Tone: Counterfactual Multimodal Learning For Fair, Trustworthy, And Text-Free Dermatology Ai, Shivam Jangid Jun 2026

Learning To See Lesions, Not Skin Tone: Counterfactual Multimodal Learning For Fair, Trustworthy, And Text-Free Dermatology Ai, Shivam Jangid

Master’s Dissertations

Recent advances in deep learning have significantly improved the performance of automated skin lesion classification systems, enabling accurate detection of various dermatological conditions from medical images. Despite these achievements, concerns regarding fairness and generalization remain a major challenge for the deployment of such systems in real-world clinical settings. A key factor contributing to these challenges is the presence of bias in training datasets, particularly with respect to skin-tone representation. Most publicly available skin lesion datasets contain a disproportionate number of samples from individuals with lighter skin tones. As a result, deep learning models trained on these datasets often learn representations …

Adaptive Spectral Trust Gate For Physics- Constrained Operator Learning, Soham Chakraborty Jun 2026

Adaptive Spectral Trust Gate For Physics- Constrained Operator Learning, Soham Chakraborty

Master’s Dissertations

Physics-informed machine learning improves the plausibility, data-efficiency and generalization of surrogate models by injecting prior physical knowledge into the learning process. The current approaches can be broadly divided into two main categories: soft constraints, which add a physics residual to the training loss but guarantee nothing at inference time, and hard constraints, which project the model output onto the constraint set exactly but apply the projection uniformly to every part of the signal — including parts that are dominated by noise, discretization error, or model mismatch, where the idealized physics is not actually trustworthy. This dissertation proposes the Adaptive Spectral …

Deep Reinforcement Learning With Directed Asymmetry And Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks For Dismantling Interdependent Multiplex Networks, Soumyajit Dev Jun 2026

Deep Reinforcement Learning With Directed Asymmetry And Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks For Dismantling Interdependent Multiplex Networks, Soumyajit Dev

Master’s Dissertations

Identifying the minimum-cost node-removal sequence that fragments a complex network - the network dismantling problem is NP-hard and central to infrastructure resilience. In interdependent multiplex networks, this difficulty is compounded by cascading cross-layer failures. While deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agents utilizing graph neural network (GNN) encoders achieve near-optimal dismantling, current state-of-the-art architectures suffer from two critical limitations. Topologically, existing agents strictly assume undirected edges, rendering them inapplicable to directed systems - such as supply chains or gene regulatory cascades - where failure propagation is fundamentally asymmetric. To resolve this, we propose Disassembling Directed Interdependent Networks (DDIN). DDIN introduces an asymmetric …

Adding 3,4-Methylenedioxy-Α-Cyclohexylaminopropiophenone To A Standard Operating Procedure (Sop) For Identifying Synthetic Cathinones Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Napassawon Timpratoom Jun 2026

Adding 3,4-Methylenedioxy-Α-Cyclohexylaminopropiophenone To A Standard Operating Procedure (Sop) For Identifying Synthetic Cathinones Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Napassawon Timpratoom

ETDs from 2020-2029

Synthetic cathinones were identified as new psychoactive substances (NPS) in the early warning advisory system by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Synthetic cathinones have been commonly referred to as bath salts, which offered “legal highs” because they were not explicitly scheduled. These compounds were detected dur-ing the screening process in casework and required internal validation for confirmation. 3,4-methylenedioxy-α-cyclohexylaminopropiophenone was the target analyte for this study. It was alternatively named N-cyclohexyl methylone and “cyputylone." The aim of the study was to validate 3,4-methylenedioxy-α-cyclohexylaminopropiophenone into a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for identifying synthetic cathinones using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry …

Topological Tools For The Analysis Of Complex Networks And Higher-Order Networks, Jason P. Laruez Jun 2026

Topological Tools For The Analysis Of Complex Networks And Higher-Order Networks, Jason P. Laruez

Theses

This dissertation investigates the intersection of topological data analysis and network science, applying and extending persistent homology, Betti numbers, and simpliciality measures to study temporal, evolving, and coevolving networked systems. We introduce a multi-layer zigzag persistent homology framework for analyzing temporal hypergraphs across multiple timescales simultaneously, and validate it on the DARPA Operationally Transparent Cyber dataset, where it produces topological signatures that distinguish malicious from benign network activity by source IP. We then apply topological tools to classical generative network models and their hypergraph extensions, characterizing how Betti numbers, filling efficiencies, and simpliciality measures evolve as these models grow or …

New Studies In Lattice-Based Cryptography, Quantum Algorithms, And Privacy-Preserving Computation, Hansraj Jangir Jun 2026

New Studies In Lattice-Based Cryptography, Quantum Algorithms, And Privacy-Preserving Computation, Hansraj Jangir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Classical public-key cryptographic schemes primarily rely on the presumed hardness of the integer factorization and discrete logarithm problems. However, Shor’s algorithm demonstrates that both problems can be solved efficiently on a sufficiently powerful quantum computer. This breakthrough motivated the search for quantum-resistant hard assumptions. The assumptions based on lattices are one of the primary candidates in post-quantum cryptography due to their strong theoretical foundations and well-established hardness against both classical and quantum attacks. In this thesis, we explore several directions of lattice based cryptology and quantum algorithms.

On the construction side, we propose two compact encryption schemes based on the …

Process Development Of C63000 Nickel Aluminum Bronze For Cold Spray, Trent Lamont Jun 2026

Process Development Of C63000 Nickel Aluminum Bronze For Cold Spray, Trent Lamont

Dissertations and Theses

Nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB) is widely used for maritime components but is traditionally limited to casting due to its complex microstructure. Fine β′ phase formation in NAB is governed by the solid-state transformation of the high-temperature β phase during cooling. This ordered martensitic β′ forms via diffusionless transformation, contributing to brittleness. Conventional metal additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion and Directed Energy Deposition, experience high in-process cooling rates that promote fine β′ formation, compromising mechanical performance. Powder production similarly suffers from β′ formation, often requiring additional processing. Cold Mechanically Derived (CMD) powders, produced from wrought feedstocks, retain …

Comparative Effectiveness Of Olmesartan Medoxomil In Monotherapy And Combination Therapy With Other Arb Medications: Literature Review, Deepika Saini

University Honors Theses

Hypertension remains one of the leading health issues; however, the awareness and control remain limited, with approximately 1.4 billion people affected by hypertension, yet only one in five has the condition effectively controlled. Despite the availability of effective treatments, knowledge and awareness remain limited. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are widely used antihypertensive medications because of their efficacy and safety profiles. Among these, Olmesartan Medoxomil has emerged as a prominent option, demonstrating strong efficacy in lowering blood pressure, both as monotherapy and in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

This thesis examines the comparative effectiveness of Olmesartan Medoxomil versus other ARBs …

Perception And Identity Through The Deconstruction Of Images, Ember Gulden Jun 2026

Perception And Identity Through The Deconstruction Of Images, Ember Gulden

University Honors Theses

Human lives are informed by images, which allow us to understand a moment from the past while transforming the way we remember it. A photograph is a representation of what was physically in front of a camera. However, the image after its capture holds no singular identity and is malleable, similar to memory. I use photography and mixed-media collage in my artistic practice to explore how perception and identity is affected by the images we consume. My BFA project "This Doesn't Have To Be The End" examines the complex nature of identity through the transformation of personal photographs into pixel-like …

A Switch-Point-Aware Contrastive Approach To Sentiment Analysis Of Hinglish Code-Mixed Text, Prasant Kumar Sahoo Jun 2026

A Switch-Point-Aware Contrastive Approach To Sentiment Analysis Of Hinglish Code-Mixed Text, Prasant Kumar Sahoo

Master’s Dissertations

With the increasing use of social media in non-English-speaking regions, especially in India, people often use Romanized Hindi and English together in their online communication. In a single sentence, they frequently mix Romanized Hindi and English, creating code-mixed text. However, most multilingual transformer models are pre-trained primarily on monolingual data. As a result, NLP systems face challenges when processing code-mixed text, as a single word may be fragmented into meaningless subword pieces, making it difficult for the model to capture its semantic meaning accurately. In this dissertation, we propose a parameter efficient neural architecture consisting of three main components to …

The European Union As A Blueprint: Can Its Success Guide Southern Africa’S Trade Bloc Integration?, Karen Francisca Makasi Jun 2026

The European Union As A Blueprint: Can Its Success Guide Southern Africa’S Trade Bloc Integration?, Karen Francisca Makasi

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines whether the European Union’s experience with regional integration can serve as a useful guide for strengthening the Southern African Development Community (SADC). While the EU is often viewed as one of the most successful models of regional cooperation, this paper argues that it should not be treated as a direct template for Southern Africa. Instead, the EU offers lessons that must be adapted to SADC’s political, economic, and institutional realities. Through comparative analysis, the thesis explores how the EU developed stronger supranational institutions, enforceable legal mechanisms, shared market rules, and funding structures that supported deeper integration among …

Bias Before Generation: Attention-Based Preemptive Fairness Signals In Large Language Models, Aniket Das Jun 2026

Bias Before Generation: Attention-Based Preemptive Fairness Signals In Large Language Models, Aniket Das

Master’s Dissertations

Warning: This paper includes examples of language that may be perceived as inappropriate or offensive. Large language models (LLMs) are known to propagate social biases embedded in their training corpora, producing outputs that disproportionately disadvantage individuals based on sensitive attributes such as gender, religion, race, sexual orientation and nationality. Existing mitigation strategies are either computationally prohibitive, require access to model parameters, or apply corrections only after biased content has already been generated. This work addresses a different question: can the model’s own internal attention dynamics, observed at inference time, serve as a reliable early-warning signal for bias, enabling intervention before …

Extending Unibreak: Semantic Retrieval And Harmful-Intent Direction Suppression For Token-Level Llm Jailbreaking, Sanket Saha Jun 2026

Extending Unibreak: Semantic Retrieval And Harmful-Intent Direction Suppression For Token-Level Llm Jailbreaking, Sanket Saha

Master’s Dissertations

Token-level adversarial perturbations remain one of the most efficient known attacks against the safety alignment of instruction-tuned large language models (LLMs). Among recent works, the UniBreak framework (You et al., 2026) stands out for unifying gradient-based optimization with an evolutionary perturbation repository. However, its repository relies solely on accumulated success frequency without utilizing query content, and its fitness function implicitly assumes that suppressing refusal tokens is sufficient to elicit harmful responses. In this dissertation, we extend UniBreak along both axes and re-evaluates the framework under stricter generalization and judgment protocols. Specifically, we introduce a semantic perturbation repository that replaces frequency-only …

Parental Gender Bias In Youth Employment Standards: Evidence From Upper Egypt, Mahmoud Saeed Jun 2026

Parental Gender Bias In Youth Employment Standards: Evidence From Upper Egypt, Mahmoud Saeed

Theses and Dissertations

Youth unemployment remains a critical challenge in Egypt, with female labor force participation among the lowest globally. While structural factors such as limited job creation and public sector contraction are well-documented, the role of family-level decision-making in constraining women's labor market entry has received limited quantitative attention. This thesis examines parental gender bias in employment standards in Upper Egypt, investigating whether and how parents impose systematically different job requirements for daughters compared to sons. Using primary survey data from 17,284 unemployed youth aged 18-35 across six governorates, paired with responses from their parents, this study analyzes parental preferences across six …

Air-Writing Recognition, Gaurang Shukla Jun 2026

Air-Writing Recognition, Gaurang Shukla

Master’s Dissertations

Air-writing is the act of tracing characters or words in free space with a fingertip, recorded by a camera, giving a touch-free input modality for smart displays, augmented and virtual reality, and assistive interfaces. It is difficult because the finger never lifts: connecting strokes join adjacent letters with no pen-up signal to mark boundaries, and the same word varies widely in scale, position, and slant across writers. The WiTA benchmark of Kim et al. provides a large, person-disjoint dataset and a baseline that treats each clip as RGB video, recognised by a spatio-temporal 3D residual network trained with a CTC …

Simultaneous Tumor Delineation And Report Generation From Brain Mr Images, Adish Mallik Jun 2026

Simultaneous Tumor Delineation And Report Generation From Brain Mr Images, Adish Mallik

Master’s Dissertations

Brain tumor analysis is an important application of medical image computing, where accurate segmentation and interpretation of tumor regions can support diagnosis and treatment planning. However, existing methods often address tumor segmentation and radiology report generation as separate tasks. Moreover, one of the major challenges in report generation tasks from MRI is accurate tumor localization. Most models fail to locate the lobe and hemisphere in which the tumor is located, causing incorrect report generation. In this regard, a unified 3D vision-language framework is proposed for simultaneous brain tumor segmentation and report generation from multi-modal MRI. Given T1, T2, T1C, and …

(Re)Claiming Homeplace: Dance As Embodied Resistance & Healing For Health & Spatial Justice, Preeya G. Kannan Jun 2026

(Re)Claiming Homeplace: Dance As Embodied Resistance & Healing For Health & Spatial Justice, Preeya G. Kannan

University Honors Theses

This thesis argues that dance functions as both an upstream public health intervention and a form of radical spatial resistance; creating healing, agency, and belonging among historically marginalized communities. Drawing on bell hooks' concept of homeplace, Jasbir Puar's assemblage theory, Nancy Krieger's eco-social theory, and Katherine McKittrick's Black geographies, I position the body as both an ecological and political landscape shaped by histories of colonialism, racial capitalism, displacement, and resilience.

Through this community-based participatory research study, Homeplace, I explore dance as a form of social prescription that centers liberation rather than pathology. Movement is often reduced in public health discourse …

From Aspiration To Obligation: A Contractual Sustainability Framework For The Egyptian Construction Industry, Salma Ali Jun 2026

From Aspiration To Obligation: A Contractual Sustainability Framework For The Egyptian Construction Industry, Salma Ali

Theses and Dissertations

The construction industry is responsible for approximately 40% of global energy consumption and 35% of total waste generation, making it one of the most significant contributors to the global sustainability challenge. In Egypt, that challenge takes a specific contractual form. Egypt’s construction sector contributes approximately 23% of national energy consumption, yet the survey findings reveal that 63.5% of construction professionals report that sustainability clauses rarely or never appear in contracts, and only 11.5% confirm the presence of enforceable provisions with measurable targets. This gap is structural rather than attitudinal. Competitive procurement penalises voluntary sustainability investment, and without contractual obligation, awareness …

The Human Side Of Humanitarian Work: Well-Being And Performance Among Aid Workers In Egypt, Mai Osama Kenawy Jun 2026

The Human Side Of Humanitarian Work: Well-Being And Performance Among Aid Workers In Egypt, Mai Osama Kenawy

Theses and Dissertations

Well-being and productivity are widely recognized as central to the work performance of humanitarian aid workers. Despite increasing attention to staff well-being, performance within the humanitarian sector in Egypt remains stagnant or, in some cases, declining. This study examines why expanded well-being initiatives have not yielded sustained performance improvements by examining how actors' external roles, organizational factors, and individual factors affect humanitarian workers’ well-being and work performance. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining ten in-depth interviews with humanitarian workers from international organizations, INGOs, and local NGOs, as well as a survey of eighty workers operating in the same context. The …
