Increased Backbone Rigidity Of Artificial Transcription Factors, Jasmine Glover, Emma Otey, Joanna K. Kwao, Nicholas Truex
Increased Backbone Rigidity Of Artificial Transcription Factors, Jasmine Glover, Emma Otey, Joanna K. Kwao, Nicholas Truex
Senior Theses
Programming DNA-binding proteins is an effective strategy for developing therapeutics that regulate gene expression. These proteins can directly bind to DNA to activate or repress transcription of specific genes. Zinc finger proteins are a class of DNA-binding proteins commonly found in eukaryotic organisms. Their DNA-binding function is derived from unique amino acid sequences within each domain that recognizes specific nucleotides, allowing each finger to selectively recognize three DNA base pairs. Adjoining of multiple domains in tandem allows recognition of a specific DNA sequence. Artificial transcription factors can be made of multiple zinc finger domains arranged in tandem and engineered to …
Voices Of Motherhood: A Comparative Analysis Of Feminist Commentary On Law In Margaret Atwood’S The Handmaid’S Tale And Celeste Ng’S Little Fires Everywhere, Addison Elaine Scott
Voices Of Motherhood: A Comparative Analysis Of Feminist Commentary On Law In Margaret Atwood’S The Handmaid’S Tale And Celeste Ng’S Little Fires Everywhere, Addison Elaine Scott
Senior Theses
This South Carolina Honors College senior thesis provides a detailed comparative literary analysis of the depiction of motherhood and the legal system in two selected novels: Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere (2017). Feminist women writers have used narratives to articulate and represent marginalized experiences suppressed by systems of power. By reading these narratives, readers can emotionally connect with the perspectives shared while engaging with the underlying feminist commentary. This explores how Atwood and Ng illustrate the failure of American legal and social systems to understand or fully protect motherhood and fertility—complicating, confounding, and …
Expanding Traditional Literacy Frameworks: A Multiliteracies Approach In Elementary Classrooms, Caroline Cuenca
Expanding Traditional Literacy Frameworks: A Multiliteracies Approach In Elementary Classrooms, Caroline Cuenca
Doctoral Dissertations
Teaching literacy in elementary schools can provide students with a rich, meaningful, and engaging learning experience. Furthermore, cultivating a culturally responsive approach to teaching and learning can promote feelings of acceptance and belonging in young children (Comber, 2018). However, elementary educators are feeling increased pressure to emphasize literacy instruction with a sole focus on foundational literacy skills, standardized curriculum, and accountability measures (Unadkat & Ochoa, 2026). Unfortunately, these instructional practices often limit students' opportunities to engage in creative, collaborative, multimodal, and meaningful learning (Unadkat & Cuenca, 2025). This mixed-methods study examined how a critical multiliteracies curriculum was implemented in a …
Exchange Rate Volatility And Colombian Export Performance: A Comparative Product-Level Time-Series Analysis, Sebastian Pedraza
Exchange Rate Volatility And Colombian Export Performance: A Comparative Product-Level Time-Series Analysis, Sebastian Pedraza
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the effects of nominal exchange rate volatility on Colombia’s export volumes to the United States, with emphasis on sectoral heterogeneity across agricultural and energy products. While exchange rate movements are widely recognized as an important determinant of trade performance, empirical evidence on the role of exchange rate volatility remains mixed, particularly for developing economies. This study contributes to the literature by distinguishing between exchange rate uncertainty and exchange rate level effects and by adopting a product-level time-series approach. Using monthly data from 2016 to 2024, the analysis focuses on four major Colombian exports: coffee, cut flowers, crude …

Staging Technological Change: Media Ecology, Cultural Memory, And Fantasy Theme Analysis In The Tesla Cybertruck Unveiling, John Rodgers
Communication Theses
This thesis examines contemporary product launches as communicative events, arguing that they help shape how technological change is publicly interpreted and remembered. Drawing on media ecology and cultural memory, and using Fantasy Theme Analysis as the primary method, the study analyzes Tesla’s 2019 Cybertruck unveiling as a case of symbolic meaning-making at the moment of introduction and in its immediate circulation. The analysis identifies four dominant fantasy themes that organize the launch’s symbolic world and cohere into a rhetorical vision presenting Tesla as a disruptive actor introducing a resilient technology for an already arriving future. It then traces how that …
Testing The Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis On Anthropogenic Pressure In Central Alabama, Gavin Terrell
Testing The Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis On Anthropogenic Pressure In Central Alabama, Gavin Terrell
Theses
Biodiversity is fundamental to maintaining ecosystem structure and function globally. Prior to the late 20th century, ecological theory generally predicted that biodiversity would be highest in systems experiencing minimal disturbance. However, Joseph H. Connell challenged this view with the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH), which posits that species diversity peaks at intermediate levels of disturbance and declines under conditions of both low and high disturbance. Although widely cited, the applicability of the IDH to natural systems remains debated, particularly in the context of anthropogenic disturbances and when diversity is measured beyond species richness alone.
This study evaluated the predictions of the …

Assessing The Role Of Fisheries In The Decline Of Seabird Populations Off The Coast Of Chile, Karen Robertson
Theses & ETDs
Seabirds have been in decline globally with an overall decrease of nearly 70% between 1950 and 2010 highlighting pressure on these systems. Seabirds are important due to the ecosystem functions and services they provide, nutrient transfer, population regulation, ecotourism attraction and overall indicators of ecosystem health. The coast of Chile is a leading area in productivity, resulting in high numbers of seabird species inhabiting its coastal areas. Additionally, it is a leading country in the fishing community, leading to an overlap between fisheries and seabird communities. While there are other threats such as invasive species and climate change contributing to …

Secondary Dual Language And Immersion Content Teachers And Their Instructional Materials, Curtis Larsen
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Secondary dual language and immersion (DLI) teachers who teach content courses, such as social studies or science, balance two central responsibilities: meeting content-area standards and supporting students’ language development (Cammarata & Tedick, 2012). Managing these responsibilities presents challenges when preparing and using instructional materials in languages other than English (Moate, 2014; Morton, 2013; Skinnari, 2020; Sun, 2017). While existing research shows that DLI teachers expend enormous energy seeking and preparing instructional materials for their content-area classes (Mathieu, 2022), little is known about the factors that guide this work or how well existing materials meet teachers’ needs. This dissertation sought to …
What Works In Martial Education: How The Experience Of Martial Educators Defines Living Muay Thai’S Place In An Evolving Martial Community, Justin Markus
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Martial education, particularly Muay Thai, rarely offers formal educator training, and what does exists is rarely backed by research. Educators frequently develop in isolation, within communities lacking evidence-based frameworks. Some practitioners may find their way to pedagogical knowledge, but most do not. Living Muay Thai (LMT) was founded in 2020 to address these gaps. This qualitative phenomenological study evaluated LMT’s impact on martial educators after its first five years (April 2020-July 2025) and identified 11 areas for future development. Seven Muay Thai educators participated in semi-structured interviews and a focus group. An emergent phenomenological analysis generated findings; a reflexive thematic …

What Happens After The Program Ends? Maintenance Of Physical Performance And Resistance Exercise Participation Following Exercise Oncology Interventions, Alexander Matthew Brooks
What Happens After The Program Ends? Maintenance Of Physical Performance And Resistance Exercise Participation Following Exercise Oncology Interventions, Alexander Matthew Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors frequently experience persistent impairments in physical performance that compromise functional independence, quality of life, and long-term health. While supervised exercise programs meaningfully improve physical performance, there is uncertainty regarding the durability of these benefits and the factors that influence long-term participation after programs end. Although exercise oncology programs typically include both aerobic and resistance exercise (RE), participation in RE tends to decline once supervision ends and remains lower than aerobic exercise over time. Therefore, the overarching aims of this dissertation were to: 1) evaluate the sustainability of physical performance improvements following exercise interventions in cancer survivors; 2) …
