Mathematical Modeling To Support Public Health Officials With Evaluating Immunization And Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention Strategies During And Outside Periods Of Outbreak Response, Gabriel Rainisch
Public Health Dissertations
A growing number of public health officials rely on mathematical modeling to aid in making decisions, especially during outbreak responses. Math models simulate health phenomenon with equations and are useful for forecasting a disease’s progression in a population and evaluating the potential effects of interventions. We generated three models to aid practicing health officials with addressing real-world issues.
The first model estimates the impact of immunization strategies on RSV-associated lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) among infants <12 months. Users input RSV burden and seasonality and examine the influence of altering product efficacy and uptake assumptions. We used the model to evaluate anticipated immunization products among a US birth cohort. We estimated without immunization, 339,650 – 475,980 LRTIs are attended annually in outpatient clinics, 126,070 – 168,510 in emergency departments (EDs), and 24,760 – 42,900 in hospitals. A passive antibody candidate given to all infants prevented the most LRTIs: 48% of outpatient visits without immunization, 51% of ED visits, and 55% of hospitalizations.
Our second model creates projections of healthcare demand during the early phase of the COVID19 pandemic and evaluates the impacts of social-distancing interventions. Users …

Diabetes And Virtual Care: How Covid-19 Impacted On A Digital Transformation, Gideon Meyerowitz-Katz
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+
Mobile phone applications and other virtual care interventions such as telehealth present both a big problem and a big opportunity for improving the health of people with chronic diseases, in particular type 2 diabetes. These diseases have become more common in recent years, and with this increasing prevalence despite prevention efforts one thing is clear: we must adapt our healthcare methods to meet this growing pressure. The advent of COVID-19 has only made this problem worse, as people’s care has been fragmented and fractured during the outbreak of a global pandemic.
The downside to apps and other virtual care interventions …

Towards A Pedagogy Of Human Connection : Understanding Teachers’ Experiences Of Connection During A Pandemic, Michael Diamond
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools shuttered quickly and re-opened slowly. These decisions impacted the well-being of teachers and students. Upon re-opening, schools in New Jersey adopted a range of instructional approaches—including virtual and hybrid models—that prioritized safety and diminished human connections. This came at a time when rates of isolation and loneliness were increasing and the US was already experiencing a crisis of connection. To understand teachers’ experiences with human connection during the winter and second spring of the COVID-19 pandemic, this dissertation study recruited nine high school teachers from one school in New Jersey who …

Original methods for analyzing and reviewing articles were developed and used. A case study is included aside from the review which focuses specifically on trends in fact-check reporting during the pandemic.
Exploring Teachers’ Views Of The Nature Of Science And Their Beliefs And Understanding About Viruses And Covid-19: A Multiple Case Study Of Three Secondary Science Teachers At A Rural High School In The Southeastern United States, Jeffrey Chalfant
Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education
Over the past several decades, science education reforms have called for students to develop appropriate views of the nature of science and have a comprehensive understanding of subject matter. Additionally, education research has demonstrated that teachers must have appropriate views of the nature of science and strong content knowledge as necessary conditions for appropriate instruction on the nature of science. However, research has consistently shown that teachers hold naïve or inadequate views of the nature of science. This is problematic as teachers are tasked with teaching science to students that is aligned with current education standards. Therefore, teachers need to …

Accessibility To Women’S Healthcare Services In Rural Vermont And The Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Leola F. Amblo
UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses
Closures of non-urgent healthcare services at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic greatly reduced accessibility to an already shrinking field of women’s healthcare in rural Vermont. This study aims to assess various barriers individuals currently face in accessing women’s healthcare services in rural areas of Vermont and how they are navigating a post-pandemic healthcare system. My research consisted of anonymous surveys for patients as well as interviews among healthcare providers asking about their experiences utilizing and providing services. Findings showed that there are considerable pre-existing barriers to accessing women’s healthcare in rural areas that were greatly exacerbated by the pandemic.

CMC Senior Theses
Due to the hardships that small businesses were facing from the onset of COVID-19 in March 2020, the government created the Payment Protection Program (PPP). This program used banks as the initial lenders for small business loans to facilitate loans from the government to small businesses. In this article, I study how participation in the PPP lending program contributes to the Bank Distress of 2023 by using a bank-level quarterly panel data set from 2019-2023. Estimation of difference-in-difference specifications reveals banks that opted into the PPP program experienced an increase in held-to-maturity securities relative to non PPP banks. The mechanism …
"Shut Down And Closed Off": A Routine Activity Approach To Investigating The Relationship Between Covid-19 School Closures And Child Sexual Abuse Report Characteristics In Georgia, Spencer E. Riner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 created a public health crisis that led to an unprecedented number of school closures. A major concern raised by child advocates, law enforcement, and social service providers was the possible increase in undetected child abuse and maltreatment. Undergirding this concern was the belief that this mitigation effort might place child abuse victims and offenders within proximity for extended periods of time. While this was a significant concern, it has rarely been analyzed empirically. To address this gap in the literature, this thesis investigates how school closures impacted the characteristics of child sexual abuse (CSA) reports …
