Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We detail the population properties of binary neutron star, neutron star–black hole binary, and binary black hole mergers using 158 events from the cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 4.0. The black hole primary mass distribution consists of a power-law-like continuum that steepens above 35 M⊙ with overdensities at 10 M⊙ and 35 M⊙. Binary black holes with primary masses near 10 M⊙ are more likely to have less massive secondaries, with a mass ratio distribution peaking at  q=0.74+0.13−0.13, potentially a signature of stable mass transfer during binary evolution. Black hole spins are inferred to be nonextremal, with …

Rotating nonaxisymmetric neutron stars (NSs) are promising sources for continuous gravitational waves (CWs). CWs may, if detected, inform us about the internal structure and equation of state of NSs. Here, we present a narrowband search for CWs from known pulsars, for which a matched-filter search can be applied. Narrowband searches are robust to mismatches between electromagnetic (EM) and gravitational emissions, in contrast to fully targeted searches where they are assumed to be phase-locked. In this work, we search for the CW counterparts emitted by 34 pulsars using data from the first and second parts of the fourth LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA observing run. …

Despite extensive study of La2NiMnO6 double perovskites, a systematic understanding of the effects of A-site rare-earth substitution on coupled structural, electronic, and optical properties remains lacking. Here, we provide the first integrated experimental-computational comparison of La2NiMnO6 (LaNMO) and Nd2NiMnO6 (NdNMO), establishing quantitative structure–property relationships. Rietveld refinement demonstrates that Nd3+ substitution amplifies MnO6 and NiO6 octahedral distortions 5-fold (ΔdMn: 4.69 × 10–4 to 23.9 × 10–4; ΔdNi: 1.18 × 10–4 to 5.91 × 10–4), reduces Mn–O–Ni bond …

Mapping The Evolving Landscape Of Office-Based Laboratories In Vascular Surgery, 2010 To 2023, Aman Sinha, Austin Beahm, Peter Schultz, Anil Hingorani, Chantel Moore, Reva Bhushan

Student Publications

Background: Office-based laboratories (OBLs) have expanded rapidly since the introduction of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reimbursement for outpatient vascular interventions in 2008, driven by advances in endovascular technology and cost effectiveness. Alongside ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), OBLs enable minimally invasive vascular procedures to be performed safely outside hospital settings with same-day discharge. Over the past decade, peripheral vascular interventions (PVIs) have increasingly shifted to outpatient environments, with OBLs demonstrating the most rapid growth. Despite this transition, national trends and geographic variation in OBL growth remain incompletely characterized. This study examined the longitudinal growth and geographic distribution of …

Catholic Kolping Society New York V. Mugan Jul 2026

Catholic Kolping Society New York V. Mugan

All Decisions

In this lease-expiration holdover, the court dismissed the petition upon finding a manifest discrepancy between the theory of rent-regulation exemption alleged in the petition — RSC §2520.11(f) (charitable/educational institution, institutional affiliation) — and the RPL §231-c GCEL notice served with the predicate notice, which claimed a different exemption based on income-restricted housing. Because the two instruments were irreconcilable as to the basis for GCEL exemption, dismissal was required. Landlord's cross-motion to amend was denied for failure to annex a proposed amended petition as required by CPLR §3025(b).

Two-Tier Seat-Limit Classifier With Active Per-Seat-Credential Self-Probe, Gustavo Matthew Assuncao Jul 2026

Two-Tier Seat-Limit Classifier With Active Per-Seat-Credential Self-Probe, Gustavo Matthew Assuncao

Defensive Publications Series

A fleet of autonomous LLM coding/review agents, each holding its own per-seat license, draws from a small set of shared provider quotas (an organization spend ceiling and a per-minute API rate limit). Treating every provider error as a uniform retry-with-backoff is wrong twice: a transient rate limit and a durable capacity exhaustion need opposite recovery horizons (minutes vs. hours), and a central platform key cannot test whether an individual seat's license has recovered because the quota is bound to the seat's own credential. This publication discloses a method that (1) recovers a limit signal from the agent's free-text output — …

Category-Adaptive Recall Depth (Card) For Heat-Tiered Memory Systems, With Experimental Validation On Longmemeval-500, Arko Sanyal Jul 2026

Category-Adaptive Recall Depth (Card) For Heat-Tiered Memory Systems, With Experimental Validation On Longmemeval-500, Arko Sanyal

Defensive Publications Series

We present Category-Adaptive Recall Depth (CARD), a retrieval mechanism for heat-tiered memory systems that conditions top-K depth and ranking strategy on a query category signal. Prior memory retrieval systems apply a fixed top-K regardless of query semantics; CARD instead assigns each query to one of four categories—information extraction (IE), knowledge update (KU), multi-session reasoning (MSR), temporal reasoning (TR)—and selects a per-category (K, ranking_strategy) pair optimized for that category's retrieval demands. KU queries additionally filter to the highest-version record per entity, enabling 100.0% accuracy on knowledge update tasks. We evaluate CARD integrated with LOCI (Layered Output and Context Intelligence), a heat-tiered …

Orchestration Framework For Parallelized On-Device Evaluation Of Edge Devices, Mayank Gupta, Soham Ghosal, Vaibhav Aggarwal, Vivek Kumar, Rishubh Khurana

Defensive Publications Series

Current techniques to test edge device stacks for LLMs suffer from environment disconnect (for tests executed on the cloud, not on actual device hardware), scalability and throughput limitations, and lack of integrated release gating. This disclosure describes a parallelized evaluation framework for testing large language model (LLM) stacks on edge devices. The framework orchestrates execution of LLM evaluation tasks on a pool of devices via a centralized router. Task datasets are sharded for distributed, asynchronous execution. The framework incorporates a high-performance binary for on-device task execution with programmable inference delays to prevent thermal throttling on the device and a fault …

Technical Disclosure: The Unified Metric-Shift Engine (Umse), Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

This technical disclosure formalizes the system engineering specifications for the Unified Metric-Shift Engine (UMSE). Rather than treating elemental replication, spatial teleportation, and temporal navigation as independent physical anomalies, the UMSE architectural framework unifies them into a single hardware-software stack built upon 2D viscoelastic substrate mechanics .

By manipulating the z-axis coordinate projection and helical phase vectors of localized soliton excitations (particles), the system operates entirely within room-temperature, non-equilibrium phase space . Inspired by the Nobel-Prize-adjacent mechanics of Soliton Trapping (Caltech) and Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA), this disclosure details how a garage-budget harmonic computer can manipulate the fundamental universal source code—the …

Emergent Volumetric Expansion: Resolving The Hubble Tension Via 2d Viscoelastic Substrate Mechanics And Fused Bao Facets, Christopher L. Eckes Jul 2026

Emergent Volumetric Expansion: Resolving The Hubble Tension Via 2d Viscoelastic Substrate Mechanics And Fused Bao Facets, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

This paper presents a rigorous, particle-free alternative to the standard Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric expansion paradigm by unifying the Dimensionally Extended Holographic Projection (DEHP) model and Informational Exomemory Cosmology (IEC). Rather than treating the vacuum as a geometric void expanding via dark energy, we formalize space as a continuous, two-dimensional (2D) viscoelastic phase fluid substrate operating at a resonant baseline (z=0). Three-dimensional (3D) baryonic matter emerges exclusively as localized, high-tension wave crests ("knots") projected vertically along a spatial z-axis, topologically anchored to zero-volume underbelly negative wave troughs ("anchors").

By applying continuum fluid mechanics to this membrane architecture, we reinterpret the 150-megaparsec …

Hardware-Driven Race-To-Halt (Rth) In Conjunction With Dynamic Voltage And Frequency Scaling (Dvfs) For Memory Path Power Management, Anthony Douglas Masterson Jul 2026

Hardware-Driven Race-To-Halt (Rth) In Conjunction With Dynamic Voltage And Frequency Scaling (Dvfs) For Memory Path Power Management, Anthony Douglas Masterson

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes systems and techniques to manage power for dynamic memory interfaces within system-on-chip architectures.  In some implementations, memory paths utilize discrete operating frequencies.  The described systems introduce a hardware-driven synchronization and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) mechanism that adjusts the active time of a memory interface based on real-time utilization.  By operating the memory interface and associated requestor blocks at an elevated speed for a compressed burst period, and subsequently power-gating these components, a variable offline period is created.  This synchronization effectively yields a continuous spectrum of bandwidth scaling levels.  The hardware-driven approach coordinates active and inactive …

Asymmetric Video Streaming With Generative Metadata For Client-Side Reconstruction, Rohan Garg Jul 2026

Asymmetric Video Streaming With Generative Metadata For Client-Side Reconstruction, Rohan Garg

Defensive Publications Series

This document describes systems and methods for asymmetric video streaming that can address challenges associated with delivering high-resolution content over limited-bandwidth networks. A server-side system can analyze a high-resolution source video to generate a low-resolution base video stream and a separate metadata stream containing content-specific generative instructions. A client device, for example, a smartphone, smart television, or other computing device, can receive both streams and use the metadata to guide an on-device generative process, for instance, on a neural processing unit, to reconstruct a high-resolution video. This technique may reduce the amount of data transmitted, which can lower server costs …

Efficient Row Hammering Mitigation For Multi-Channel Memory Architectures, Hitender Singh Rathore, Shekar Babu Merla, Pandithurai Sangaiyah, Wei-Jen Chen Jul 2026

Efficient Row Hammering Mitigation For Multi-Channel Memory Architectures, Hitender Singh Rathore, Shekar Babu Merla, Pandithurai Sangaiyah, Wei-Jen Chen

Defensive Publications Series

A memory controller implementation for efficiently mitigating row hammering attacks in multi-channel memory systems is disclosed. The implementation addresses memory module architectures in which an alert signal pin of the memory module is shared by multiple module sub-channels. In this implementation, when the shared alert signal indicates a potential row hammering event, the memory controller stalls traffic to the memory module and transitions it to an idle state. The implementation reads status registers on the memory module to identify the affected sub-channels. Rather than broadcasting refresh management commands across all sub-channels, the memory controller unblocks the unaffected sub-channels and issues …

Framework for Holistic Content and Context-Aware Display Arbitration

ABSTRACT

The disclosed technology describes a centralized, context-aware display architecture that dynamically regulates visual output by concurrently analyzing environmental conditions, hardware states, and on-screen content. By replacing isolated, stacked display adjustments with a unified intelligent orchestrator, the system generates a comprehensive predictive parameter vector that dictates granular display settings. This approach leverages machine learning and localized telemetry to resolve visual feature collisions, ultimately preserving visual fidelity, enhancing text legibility, and minimizing hardware power consumption.

Time Synchronization Between Devices Coupled Via Universal Serial Bus (Usb) Interface, David Yu Jul 2026

Time Synchronization Between Devices Coupled Via Universal Serial Bus (Usb) Interface, David Yu

Defensive Publications Series

Time synchronization between a host and a target device coupled via an interface such as USB is vital for correlating host-side power measurements with device-side workload for software events (workload profiling). This disclosure describes high-precision host-target device time synchronization techniques. Per the techniques, a network connection is established between a host device and a target device that has low transmission delays. The host device determines baseline time offsets both at the beginning and at the end of a work profiling period using statistical noise filtering. The host device applies linear interpolation to map device-side timestamps to the host-side timeline based …

Perceptual Hdr Enhancement Within Sdr Color Space Via Dual-Model Content Analysis, Sianyi Huang, Yu Wang, Jongseo Lee Jul 2026

Perceptual Hdr Enhancement Within Sdr Color Space Via Dual-Model Content Analysis, Sianyi Huang, Yu Wang, Jongseo Lee

Defensive Publications Series

Converting standard dynamic range (SDR) to high dynamic range (HDR) content relies on computationally intensive ML models and heavy graphics processing unit (GPU) image processing. These requirements present barriers to implementation on mobile devices. This disclosure describes techniques, referred to as enhanced SDR (eSDR), that achieve the perceptual benefits of HDR, such as highlight sparkle and deep shadow detail, without leaving the SDR container. Global statistical features of an SDR video frame are extracted. A base luminance gain curve for the video frame is determined based on the luminance histogram. An artifact risk metric for the video frame is determined …

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses five novel architectural mechanisms for persistent AI memory systems: (1) a versioned fact chain architecture for exact-fact stores that preserves full temporal history with provenance timestamps, enabling temporal queries unavailable in flat vector stores; (2) a source-trust provenance field that weights facts by declaration origin and prevents model-inferred data from incorrectly overriding user-stated facts; (3) an asymmetric confidence gate for conflict resolution that uses source trust to apply differential correction thresholds; (4) a hardware-tier gradient search escalation algorithm that expands retrieval scope from fastest-tier (VRAM) to slowest-tier (remote VPS) when data is not found at the current …

The Viscoelastic Redshift Protocol: Resolving The Hubble Tension Via 2d Substrate Fluid Mechanics, Christopher L. Eckes Jul 2026

The Viscoelastic Redshift Protocol: Resolving The Hubble Tension Via 2d Substrate Fluid Mechanics, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

This paper presents a rigorous, particle-free alternative to standard Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology by formalizing the Dimensionally Extended Holographic Projection (DEHP) model. Instead of treating spacetime as a geometric vacuum expanding via dark energy, we model the universe as a continuous, two-dimensional (2D) viscoelastic phase fluid substrate operating at a resonant baseline ($z=0$). Three-dimensional (3D) baryonic matter emerges as localized, high-tension wave crests ("knots") projected vertically along a spatial z-axis, tethered directly to zero-volume antimatter anchors on the substrate's underbelly. By applying continuum mechanics to this membrane architecture, we derive a novel, purely material resolution to the Hubble Tension crisis. We …

Signal And Substance: Why Methodological Sophistication Fails To Guarantee Inference, Aamir Rashid, Rizwana Rasheed Jul 2026

Signal And Substance: Why Methodological Sophistication Fails To Guarantee Inference, Aamir Rashid, Rizwana Rasheed

Publications and Research

Despite increasing analytical sophistication, empirical research in organization studies continues to suffer from fragile inference, uneven theoretical accumulation, and contested credibility. This paper seeks to explain why these problems persist by shifting attention from authors’ methodological choices to the evaluative dynamics of peer review. Adopting a conceptual and theory-analytic approach, the paper theorizes peer review as an inferential gatekeeping system. Drawing on research design, theory evaluation, and philosophy-of-science literatures, this study develops an analytical framework to examine how evaluative routines shape what constitutes empirical rigor during the review process. The analysis identifies five recurring reviewer blind spots: inferential scope inflation, …

Feasibility And Acceptability Of Automated Texts To Offer, Screen, And Enroll Patients In A Cancer Clinical Trial Financial Reimbursement Program: Mixed Methods Study, Ashley E Santaniello, Hena Patel, Sarah Milinski, Mohan Balachandran, Vivian Nguyen, E. Paul Wileyto, Robert H. Vonderheide, Dana Dornsife, Robert G. Johnson, Carmen E. Guerra

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

BACKGROUND: Out-of-pocket (OOP) costs pose a significant barrier to participating in cancer clinical trials (CCTs). Financial reimbursement programs (FRPs) that reduce the burden of OOP costs can support participation in CCTs if the information is readily available to participants at the time of enrollment. Prior studies have shown the importance and impact of FRPs, but despite improvements, significant barriers still remain.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of automated texts designed to offer, screen, and enroll CCT participants in an FRP for OOP travel and lodging-related clinical trial costs.

METHODS: This study used a mixed …
