Performance Evaluation Of Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search On Nvidia Bluefield-3 Dpu, Sophia Bhoria, Nathan Tibbetts, Arjun Kirubakaran, Alima Subedi, Satish Puri

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Advanced SmartNICs known as Data Processing Units (DPU) enable in-network data analytics, being equipped with standard processors and accelerators capable of doing custom computation on-NIC. These SmartNICs are advantageous because the host CPU can delegate simpler data analytics tasks, like filtering, to the NIC where the data first arrives. Only data needing further refinement must be passed on to the host CPU. Our benchmarks focus on NVIDIA's commercially available Bluefield-3 DPU. Similarity search, particularly Approximate Nearest Neighbor (ANN) search, is an important domain with wide usage across numerous applications. We explore ANN search on SmartNICs, providing insight into the performance …

Regularization-Based Crystallite Size Distribution Analysis Of Pt/C Catalysts From X-Ray Diffraction, Chenglong Ma, Weiyu Shi, Zhongjun Hou

Online First

Accurate determination of the platinum (Pt) crystallite size distribution in carbon-supported Pt/C catalysts is critical for evaluating both the initial performance and long-term durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Conventional characterization approaches—including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and the Scherrer equation—are limited by restricted statistical sampling, sensitivity to support interference, or the inability to resolve the full breadth of the size distribution. In this work, we present a regularization-based inversion framework that extracts the volume-weighted crystallite size distribution directly from X-ray diffraction (XRD) line profiles, without requiring any a priori assumption regarding the functional form …

All Decisions

In this GCEL holdover proceeding, landlord claimed the small landlord exemption under RPL §214(1) and served a 90-day no-grounds termination notice (RPL §231-c). The petition alleged the apartment was not subject to rent control or stabilization. Tenant moved pursuant to CPLR 3211(a)(7) to dismiss for failure to state a cause of action, arguing landlord failed to incorporate the required small landlord ownership information into the GCEL notice accompanying the predicate notice. The court granted dismissal, holding that failure to include small landlord ownership information in the GCEL notice is a fatal defect and that the predicate notice is unamendable. Landlord's …

Challenges In Scaling R-Tree Spatial Search On Processing-In-Memory, Tasmia Jannat, Michael Gowanlock, Satish Puri Jul 2026

Challenges In Scaling R-Tree Spatial Search On Processing-In-Memory, Tasmia Jannat, Michael Gowanlock, Satish Puri

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Spatial query processing is important in scientific, geospatial, and data-intensive applications. R-trees are widely used to index spatial objects, but their query-dependent traversal creates irregular work across different regions. This poster studies the challenges of scaling R-tree spatial search on a commercial Processing-in-Memory (PIM) system. Although PIM reduces CPU to memory data movement by executing search near memory, it does not remove full-pipeline overheads: the host still manages data placement, query batching, kernel launches, result retrieval, and aggregation. Our results show strong DPU-side search acceleration, with PIM kernel speedup ranging from about 20 x to 73 x, but end-to-end speedup …

As the building sector shifts toward community-led energy efficiency (EE) initiatives to mitigate the climate crisis, scaling adoption requires understanding behavioral drivers. This study examines key drivers of EE measure adoption: perceived non-energy benefits, trusted advisors, and behavioral signaling. This research contributes to the energy policy and social science literature by empirically linking social trust with signaling preferences. It extends existing EE adoption decision theories by identifying distinct clusters of “expert” versus “close” advisors across demographic groups. Data from an experimental survey (n = 238) in Portland, Oregon, were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and multivariate regression modeling. Results …

Extending Premerger Notification To Labor Markets, Eric A. Posner, Elena Prager Jul 2026

Extending Premerger Notification To Labor Markets, Eric A. Posner, Elena Prager

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

US antitrust law requires mergers above a certain size to be reported to the federal antitrust agencies for review prior to consummation. For decades, this premerger notification process and subsequent merger review focused nearly exclusively on product markets. In the last few years, the agencies have also begun to challenge mergers on their effects on labor markets. But the agencies’ ability to detect potential labor market harms is hampered by an absence of labor market information at the premerger notification stage. This article proposes specific types of information that the agencies could collect about labor markets in order to put …

Isolated Transverse Colon Perforation During Corticosteroid Tapering In Quiescent Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Histopathology-Supported Diagnosis Of Exclusion, Ridwan A. Lawal, Nestor Malaga, Nida Asif, Fatimah Bello, Juliana Yang Jul 2026

Isolated Transverse Colon Perforation During Corticosteroid Tapering In Quiescent Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Histopathology-Supported Diagnosis Of Exclusion, Ridwan A. Lawal, Nestor Malaga, Nida Asif, Fatimah Bello, Juliana Yang

School of Medicine Publications

Gastrointestinal perforation in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is uncommon but potentially fatal, and attribution is clinically consequential because perforation may reflect lupus enteritis with mesenteric vasculitis, infection, diverticular or stercoral disease, malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), medication-related injury, or a combination of mechanisms. Corticosteroid-associated perforation is therefore best treated as a diagnosis of exclusion rather than as an isolated novel observation. We report a 62-year-old woman with SLE who developed sudden severe right-sided abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, leukocytosis, lactic acidosis, and radiographic pneumoperitoneum while tapering prednisone from 60 mg/day to 10 mg/day over three months, with 10 mg/day documented at …

Slc Transporter-Mediated Functional Imaging In Cancer Diagnosis, Lumeng Zhang, Jun He

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Functional imaging has become an important approach for evaluating tumor physiology in vivo beyond morphologic assessment. Radiotracers used for cancer imaging are designed to mimic endogenous substrates or substrate analogues, and their accumulation can depend on membrane transport, intracellular metabolism, and clearance from normal tissues. Specifically, SLC transporters contribute to tracer uptake and signal formation, linking transporter activity with measurable imaging signals in cancer. While [18F]FDG PET/CT remains the most widely used example of transporter-associated metabolic imaging, SLC transporter-mediated imaging strategies have been developed to assess amino acid transport, sodium-dependent glucose uptake, redox metabolism, lactate exchange, nucleoside metabolism, choline metabolism, …
