Deep Neural Networks: A Formulation Via Non-Archimedean Analysis, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo Jul 2026

Deep Neural Networks: A Formulation Via Non-Archimedean Analysis, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We introduce a new class of deep neural networks (DNNs) with multilayered tree-like architectures. The architectures are codified by using numbers in the ring of integers of non-Archimedean local fields. These rings have a natural hierarchical organization as infinite rooted trees. Natural morphisms on these rings allow us to construct finite multilayered architectures. The new DNNs are robust universal approximators of real-valued functions defined on the mentioned rings. We also show that the DNNs are robust universal approximators of real-valued square-integrable functions defined in the unit interval.

Application Of Machine Learning For Correcting Defect-Induced Neuromorphic Circuit Inference Errors, Vedant V. Sawal, Hiu Yung Wong

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This paper presents a machine learning-based approach to correct inference errors caused by stuck-at faults in fully analog ReRAM-based neuromorphic circuits. Using a Design-Technology Co-Optimization (DTCO) simulation framework, the study models and analyzes six spatial defect types - circular, circular-complement, ring, row, column, and checkerboard - across multiple layers of a multi-array neuromorphic architecture for handwritten digit recognition tasks. It is demonstrated that the proposed correction method, which employs a lightweight neural network trained on the circuit's 10 output voltages, can improve inference accuracy from 55% to 90% (+ 35 percentage points) in highly degraded defective scenarios. Results show that …

The nonheme Fe(II)/2-oxoglutarate (2OG)-dependent histone demethylase KDM6B (JMJD3) has demonstrated a capacity for diversity in the oxidative transformations of Nε-alkylated lysine residues in histone H3 peptides; however, the mechanisms of such dealkylations, compared with standard KDM-catalyzed demethylations, remain unexplored. We implemented molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics to investigate the catalytic strategies for the sequential oxidation reactions of KDM6B with different N-alkylated forms of lysine K27 in the H3 peptide chain, that is Nε, Nε-methyl ethyl lysine (Lys(Me/Eth)) and Nε-isopropyl lysine (Lys(iPr)). The results for sequential oxidations, which yield alcohol, aldehyde, and …

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), the latter of which often originates from DVT and can be fatal.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify causal genetic factors that alter risk of PE among those with a presumed DVT.

Methods: Using a case-only design of VTE, we conducted meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in the International Network Against Venous Thrombosis Consortium. Among participants diagnosed with VTE, each study identified those who had a clinically reported PE, with or without a clinically reported DVT; those remaining had isolated DVT. Logistic regression …

Most Praise Maine As Place To Live But Many Find It Unaffordable, Prefer Lower Cost Of Living & Taxes Elsewhere 7/27/2026, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Nearly three-quarters of Maine residents rate the state as a very good or good place to live with Republicans and Northern Mainers more downbeat. Only a quarter of Mainers describe the state as affordable. Three in ten say they are likely to move out of Maine within the next five years, including half of Republicans, with lower housing costs, cost of living, and taxes frequently sought after, along with a different political or social environment. If they were to leave the state, Mainers are most likely to say they would move to New Hampshire or Massachusetts.

Hybrid Microbial-Enzymatic Electrosynthesis For De Novo Decanoic Acid Production From Co2, Yongze Wang, Wenjin Dong, Meijing Wei, Su Song, Zhiqing Huang, Yaojie Liu, Shelley D. Minteer, Hui Chen Jul 2026

Hybrid Microbial-Enzymatic Electrosynthesis For De Novo Decanoic Acid Production From Co2, Yongze Wang, Wenjin Dong, Meijing Wei, Su Song, Zhiqing Huang, Yaojie Liu, Shelley D. Minteer, Hui Chen

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The steady increase in atmospheric CO2 levels is a key driver of anthropogenic climate change, prompting widespread global concern. In this context, the sustainable conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals represents an attractive route toward carbon-neutral manufacturing and green chemistry. Here, we developed a proof-of-concept hybrid microbial-enzymatic electrosynthesis system that combines microbial electrosynthesis (MES) and enzymatic electrosynthesis (EES) to convert CO2 into decanoic acid under ambient conditions, using electrical energy. In the MES module, CO2 was converted to acetate via the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway of Clostridium ljungdahlii, using H2 produced by electrochemical water splitting as the electron …

Reskilling And Retraining The Water Technology Workforce: An Agentic Generative Ai Framework For Water Purification, Nano‑Mems, And Curriculum Development, Satyadhar Joshi, Noor Zulfiqar

Harrisburg University Other Works

The rapid digitalization of water infrastructure is bringing artificial intelligence, advanced sensing, and membrane materials science into routine water treatment practice. At the same time, utilities, regulators, and training institutions face a persistent workforce challenge: many operators, engineers, and managers are being asked to adopt data-driven tools without a coherent educational pathway that links AI literacy to real treatment workflows. This article synthesizes recent literature on agentic generative AI, reinforcement learning, smart sensing, nano-enabled membranes, and digital twins for water systems, then translates those developments into a structured reskilling model for the water sector. The proposed framework is organized around …

Construct Overlap Inflates Apparent Economic-Capacity Alignment: Evidence From A Hebei City Panel, 2014–2023, Shuo Pang, Jianguang Hou, Danlin Yu

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Index-based urban sustainability studies often ask whether urban resilience and economic development evolve harmoniously, but the answer is unreliable when the two constructs contain the same economic indicators. A targeted audit of recent Chinese coupling studies shows that economic variables are commonly embedded in urban-resilience systems without a reported construct-overlap weight check. Using Hebei, China, as a measurement-validity test rather than as another provincial economic-growth case, this study analyzes a balanced 2014–2023 panel of 11 prefecture-level cities. Duplicated economic concepts account for 44.4% of the baseline resilience-index entropy weight and 88.2% of the baseline economic-index weight, indicating substantial mechanical exposure …

A Tropically Hot Late Jurassic North American Sundance Sea: Evidence For The Oxfordian Warm Interval, R. W. Reynolds, R. Jerrett, A. Marca, M. Davies, S. M. Bernasconi, R. B. Paxton, G. Nowell, P. Dennis, U. Balthasar, G. D. Price

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Late Jurassic greenhouse climate was characterized by elevated atmospheric CO2 (pCO2) at 600–1,000 ppm and sea-surface temperatures substantially warmer than today. These conditions peaked during the Oxfordian, when extensive epicontinental seaways, including the North American Sundance Sea, dominated mid-latitude paleoceanography. We present clumped isotope (Δ47) and 87Sr/86Sr analyses of Oxfordian belemnite and Gryphaea fossils from the Sundance Sea to reconstruct paleotemperatures (tΔ47) and assess the balance between open ocean and terrestrial inputs. The data reveal (a) a mean tΔ47 of 30.6°C (±1.6 1SE), or 27.6°C (±1.6 1SE) if …

Purpose: Lateral electrical surface stimulation (LESS), commercially known as the ScoliTron™, emerged in the late 1970s as a noninvasive alternative to bracing for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Early clinical reports generated considerable enthusiasm and adoption, but the technique was ultimately abandoned. This study examined the rise and fall of LESS through a combined analysis of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) archives and published literature, with the goal of understanding factors that influence the adoption, evaluation, and abandonment of innovation in scoliosis care.

Methods: A structured historical review was conducted using archival materials from the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), including meeting abstracts, …

397 E 49th St Llc V. Branford Jul 2026

397 E 49th St Llc V. Branford

All Decisions

This superintendent holdover was dismissed for a defective notice of petition containing outdated COVID-19 pandemic-era language informing the respondent that the case would be on hold until further notice and that settlement conferences required both sides to have attorneys. The court found this language contrary to the spirit and intent of the mandatory form required by 22 NYCRR § 208.42(b) and Administrative Order 163/19, and prejudicial to the respondent.

352-54 W. 48th St. Hous. Dev. Fund Corp. V. Tineo

All Decisions

In this HDFC holdover for nonprimary residence and illegal sublet, court granted respondent's motion for spoliation sanctions under CPLR § 3126, finding petitioner's duty to preserve building security camera footage arose when the notice to cure was served in October 2015. Court declined drastic sanctions but precluded petitioner from introducing any testimony about the destroyed footage or any surviving footage (which had been selectively preserved), finding ordinary negligence sufficient to trigger spoliation sanctions.

Sternberger V. Tesoriero Jul 2026

Sternberger V. Tesoriero

All Decisions

In this holdover proceeding, Petitioner served Respondents with a 90-Day Notice of Termination. Respondents moved to dismiss on multiple grounds under CPLR § 3211. The court granted the motion to dismiss, finding, among other things, that the predicate notice was defective and could not be amended. The court noted that Petitioner's intermingling of funds negated her claim that rental payments were not negotiated.

Novel Integrative Mobilizable Elements (Imes) In Vibrio Chromosomes Linked To Translucent Post-Larvae Disease (Tpd), Ruyi Hao, Yan Fang, Yang Yang, Mingshu Yang

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Translucent post-larvae disease (TPD), caused by specific Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains, poses a global threat to shrimp aquaculture. A key virulence factor in these strains is the vhv gene cluster, which encodes toxins central to TPD pathogenesis. While plasmid-borne vhv genes have been extensively studied, the chromosome-borne vhv genes in TPD-associated strains remain poorly characterized. In this study, we systematically analyzed integrative mobilizable elements (IMEs) on the small secondary chromosomes of TPD-associated V. parahaemolyticus. Seven nearly identical novel IMEs harboring full-length vhv clusters were identified from seven independent strains. These IMEs encode a tyrosine recombinase for site-specific chromosomal integration, yet lack …

Rethinking Learning From Incidents In Healthcare: A Safety-Ii Model Integrating Work-As-Imagined, Work-As-Done, And Work-As-Experienced, Nawal Khattabi, Axel Ros, Matt Carey, Aled Jones Jul 2026

Rethinking Learning From Incidents In Healthcare: A Safety-Ii Model Integrating Work-As-Imagined, Work-As-Done, And Work-As-Experienced, Nawal Khattabi, Axel Ros, Matt Carey, Aled Jones

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Healthcare organizations increasingly investigate patient safety incidents using systems thinking. However, even investigations that claim to adopt a systems approach frequently revert to linear, event-focused reasoning concluding on deviations and recommending further training. A foundational question remains unresolved: when an incident review identifies a "deviation", does this represent exceptional behavior or the system's typical mode of operation that generally succeeds under varying conditions but occasionally fails? Without this distinction, explanations for incidents tend to focus on individual non-compliance rather than understanding the everyday adaptations that enable care delivery in a complex adaptive system. Consequently, incident reviews that promote system learning …

GRETA is a recently-completed Department of Energy-funded project to construct an array of 120 gamma-ray detectors for use in nuclear physics experiments. The Gretina Array was the successful pilot project to construct 48 of the eventual 120 detectors that would be used in the array. UCGretina is a program that is used to simulate the GRETA array for the purposes of planning experiments and analyzing measurements. My job for this summer, with the advent of the full GRETA system, was to implement the new modular mounting structure for the full GRETA array in the simulation code. This involves creating the …

The Possibilities Of Constitutional Education, Mark Jia Jul 2026

The Possibilities Of Constitutional Education, Mark Jia

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Constitutional scholarship has traditionally focused on formal constitutional actors: courts, legislatures, and executives. These actors are often regarded as primary sources of constitutional law, or in some cases, as final arbiters of constitutional meaning. More peripheral in this literature are actors thought to transmit what courts and high officials have established. These constitutional educators, including law professors, legal journalists, and civics planners, are often overlooked for defensible reasons: They lack the normative authorities of formal institutional actors, and they do not exercise power as it is often understood in public law.

This Article advances a general theory of constitutional education …

Extracellular matrix (ECM) dysregulation plays a significant role in the development of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The ECM around the chondrocytes in the nucleus pulposus (NP) is unique in that it contains ColVI. While linked to chondrocyte proliferation in cartilage, ColVI's specific role in IVD degeneration is less clear. Our aim was to determine the expression of ColVI in NP cells from degenerative IVDs, along with the effects of soluble ColVI on NP cells. Thus, we compared the expression levels of ColVI in human degenerated IVD samples, along with the effect of soluble ColVI on primary human NP cells. A …
