Pollination by beetles has evolved multiple times in flowering plants but with relatively few plant species adapted specifically to pollination by scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). However, some plant species may produce floral scents and offer floral rewards that attract scarabs alongside other pollinator functional groups. In Banksia attenuata (Proteaceae), nocturnal observations led to the discovery of extensive floral visitation by beetles, alongside birds, mammals and diurnal insects. Given the distinctive melon-like floral scent of B. attenuata, we predicted long-distance attraction of beetles by chemical cues. We undertook floral visitor surveys aided by camera traps and video recordings, and quantified insect …

Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) schemes are increasingly used to enhance water security, yet infiltration schemes are susceptible to clogging which consequently reduces operational efficiency. This study examines two full-scale Australian case studies: Jurien Bay (JB, Western Australia) and Lockyer Valley (LV, Queensland), representing treated wastewater (TWW) and surface water recharge, respectively. Recharge water at JB exhibited high clogging potential in relation to literature values proposed to manage clogging: total suspended solids (TSS) ranged from 100 to 176 mg/L (target ≤2 mg/L), turbidity 70–100 NTU (target ≤3 NTU), and total nitrogen (TN) 5–16 mg/L (target ≤10 mg/L). LV showed lower clogging …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study addresses how the aviation sector can create value by fostering innovation in collaboration with start-ups. A novel ‘Key-Success Factors in Aviation-Start-up Collaboration Framework’ is proposed to explain the innovation process, identify key success factors, and generate valuable insights into the aviation sector and start-up partnerships. Drawing on 31 of 80 consolidated key success factors selected from the literature and validated through ten interviews with managers of aviation innovation programs and start-up founders, the proposed framework is structured into three dimensions: (i) antecedents, (ii) governance, support, and development, and (iii) innovation and value creation, and 13 related categories. The …

Musical Training Increases Anticipatory Responding And Predictive Control In Sequence Learning, Li Ann Leow, Jarrad Lum, Sara Johnson, Emily Corti, Welber Marinovic
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Musicians demonstrate advantages in acquiring motor sequences, showing faster learning and better explicit sequence knowledge than non-musicians. However, it is unclear whether this advantage extends beyond acquisition to the consolidation phase, which is when newly learned skills stabilize and become resistant to interference. Additionally, while interference from executing competing motor tasks is well-established, less is known about whether purely sensory information presented after learning can disrupt consolidation of a bimodal motor sequence. We investigated how post-acquisition sensory interference affects performance of a learned audio-visual sequence, and whether musical training moderates this vulnerability. Participants first learned an explicit sequence in a …

Background and aims: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) has been proposed as a risk factor for cognitive impairment. Yet evidence is inconsistent and often limited by heterogeneous definitions and lack of longitudinal assessments. This study aimed to examine associations of SO with all-cause and subtype-specific dementia, and to assess dose–response patterns and how longitudinal changes in body composition and muscle strength relate to dementia risk. Methods: We included 489,972 adults (mean age 56.5 ± 8.1 years) followed for a median of 13.6 years. SO was defined using the Sarcopenic Obesity Global Leadership Initiative (SOGLI) criteria. Cox models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for …

Background and Objectives The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews (ScRs) (PRISMA-ScR) was published in 2018 to provide reporting guidance. A substantial increase in published ScRs in recent years coupled with the omission or lack of engagement of interest-holders, including patients and public partners, as research partners throughout its development necessitate updating PRISMA-ScR. Important methodological advancements have emerged since PRISMA-ScR 2018, including automation and data extraction, which need to be incorporated into this update and reflected in new reporting items. Aligned with PRISMA 2020, this ScR underpins the update by identifying potential new …

A Review Of Blue Carbon Credit Projects' Socio-Economic Activities, Nata Tavonvunchai, Holly J. Niner, Abigail Mcquatters-Gollop, Siân E. Rees
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Coastal ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems (mangroves, seagrasses and saltmarshes) are critical for climate regulation and biodiversity, yet significant funding gaps persist in marine conservation. While blue carbon credits are increasingly used to bridge these gaps, concerns remain regarding their efficacy in delivering socio-economic benefits. Based on lessons from terrestrial carbon markets, failing to prioritise local community needs can lead to inequitable outcomes and externally mandated constraints, which undermine the legitimacy of nature-based solutions. This research seeks to add to the centralised understanding of the social dimension of blue carbon by delivering a comprehensive review of 77 publicly listed projects from global …

The Ambivalent Wisdom Of Moral Disgust, Brandon Yip
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper has two aims. First, to provide a positive account of moral disgust. I suggest that moral disgust is a response to acts that are socially corrosive, namely, acts that undermine the normative structure to which an agent is attuned. I support this analysis with two lines of evidence: (1) moral disgust serves the important function of guarding normative structures from socially corrosive actions and (2) the analysis provides an illuminating explanation of moral disgust in a wide variety of cases. The secondary aim of this paper is to probe the normative implications of my positive account. I suggest …

This project investigates the impact of writing-to-learn practices on the critical thinking skills of first-year students in a graduate teacher preparation program in the Kyrgyz Republic. For this purpose, multiple writing-to-learn strategies (such as Focused Freewriting, Loop Writing, Private Freewriting, Writing in the Zones, Dialectical Notebooks, and others) were integrated into the academic writing course instruction. The analysis of student responses at the beginning and end of the course demonstrated a movement from general statements towards richer responses with evidence of perspective taking, metacognitive reflection, and synthesis. Additionally, student reflections revealed that writing-to-learn practices provided space to overcome writing anxiety, …

Quaking Aspen On Cedar Mountain, Utah: Status And Update, Jaycee Cappaert, Larissa L. Yocom, Paul C. Rogers, Darren J. Mcavoy, R. Justin Derose
Wildland Resources Student Research
Quaking aspen forests are important communities in the western United States where they provide preferential food and habitat for animals, limit wildfires from spreading, and have favorable aesthetics, among other things. Their putative decline is an issue for ecology and management. We remeasured the aspen population on Cedar Mountain, Utah, to assess changes to its condition since it was originally measured in 2008 and laid the groundwork for continued aspen monitoring on Cedar Mountain. Our objectives were to compare current metrics of stand structure and composition, mortality, crown dieback, bole damage, regeneration, and recruitment, to those of the original inventory. …

My God Is My Mercy: A Philological And Exegetical Study Of The Use Of Hesed In The Old Testament And Its Echoes In The New Testament, Sister Mary Agatha Hester, O.P.
Theology Graduate Theses
One little word can have a mighty impact. This is the case with the Hebrew word hesed. Having encountered hesed in Scripture scholarship, pursuit of its nature and nuance has become a quest that has resulted in this thesis. What follows is a philological and exegetical study of the meaning and use of hesed in the Old Testament, its intertextual echoes in the New Testament, and its implications for right living. First, the use of hesed is analyzed in the context of the Old Testament, focusing on Exodus 34:6-7, which serves as the exemplar text. Using the work of …

Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–75), born in Certaldo, Tuscany, is one of the tre corone (Three Crowns) of Italian Literature. He shares this distinction with Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), about whose life and literary works he wrote treatises and delivered lectures, and Francesco Petrarch (1304–74), with whom he formed a lasting friendship (beginning in 1350). All three wrote widely acclaimed literature in the Florentine-Tuscan dialect of Italian, enabling it to become the basis for standard Italian. In addition to elevating the Italian vernacular as a literary language, they prioritized Classical Studies and were forerunners of the Italian humanist movement (c.1400–1600). Today, Boccaccio is …

Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) is an ectoparasitic flea whose adult females cause tungiasis by embedding into the host’s skin. Environmental, social and financial challenges in tungiasis endemic areas have left this disease neglected and lacking locally available control measures. One possible approach for controlling T. penetrans targets its off-host stages; however, surveillance tools for adult fleas are still lacking. Moreover, host-seeking cues and behaviour of adult T. penetrans remain largely unknown. In this study, we show that visual cues are attractive to adult T. penetrans. Newly emerged T.penetrans responded to light stimuli across a broad spectrum, ranging from …

Purpose Cancer care capacity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is constrained by late diagnosis and limited treatment access. Few funding mechanisms support innovative, locally led programs to address these challenges. A collaborative initiative was developed to strengthen oncology care through quality improvement (QI) projects.
Materials and Methods The program was developed by Global Bridges Oncology (GBO) at Mayo Clinic, Pfizer Global Medical Grants, and the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer. A committee composed primarily of African oncology experts guided the process. An RFP was disseminated across SSA in English, French, and Portuguese, inviting applications to improve diagnostic and …
