Teenage parents face the unique challenge of simultaneously navigating adolescence and parenthood. Rising adolescent pregnancy rates in the Philippines necessitate urgent efforts to better understand and support them. Using Photovoice, Filipino teenage parents captured their lived experiences through photographs, resulting in eight themes: (1) Managing stresses and conflicts in partner relationships, (2) Peers as a source of emotional support, (3) Support and strain in family relationships, (4) Shifts in normative adolescent experiences and priorities, (5) Strain and agency in balancing roles, (6) Desire to enhance parenting knowledge and skills, (7) Environmental drivers of early sexual exposure, (8) Sexual knowledge from …

High Biochar Rate Improves Water Retention In Some Environmentally Sensitive Soils, Samundra Sigdel
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Improving water retention and other hydraulic properties is key to managing soil water and sustaining crop production under fluctuating and extreme weather events. We assessed how wood biochar (836 g C kg-1) applied at 0, 6.25, 12.5, 25, and 50 Mg ha-1 affected: i) soil hydraulic properties after 5 years and ii) corn and soybean yield, and biomass production of cereal rye cover crop (CC) and CC mix (cereal rye, radish, and winter pea) in sandy, sloping, and semi-arid soils in the central U.S. Great Plains over 6 years. Biochar affected field saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat …

Graph Perturbation Analysis For Subgraph Counting, Hanhua Xiao, Yuchen Li, Kyriakos Mouratidis
Graph Perturbation Analysis For Subgraph Counting, Hanhua Xiao, Yuchen Li, Kyriakos Mouratidis
PhD Student’s Publications Collection
Subgraph counting, which involves determining the frequency of a query graph within a data graph, has numerous applications such as query optimization, fraud detection, and evaluating the expressiveness of graph neural networks. Despite its importance, there has been no systematic study on the impact of adversarial graph perturbations on subgraph counts. In this work, we examine the kSub problem, which aims to identify k edge additions that maximize the count of a query graph. We prove that kSub is intractable due to its NP-hardness, even for constant approximation. To address this, we relax the problem into a top-k selection, termed …

Three Decades Of Supreme Court Copyright Decisions: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band
Three Decades Of Supreme Court Copyright Decisions: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
This article discusses the revelations in the case files of eight Supreme Court Justices concerning eighteen copyright-related decisions issued by the Court between 1973 and 2005. The papers show the Court as a profoundly human institution, with the Justices often struggling to craft opinions that could gain the support of a majority. The Justices clearly cared about the copyright merits, but they were also willing to compromise to achieve a certain result. In several cases, the final opinion was anything but inevitable. This was particularly so with Sony Corporation of America v. Universal City Studios, 464 U.S. 417 (1984), …

The Role Of Local Winds And A Semi-Persistent Coastal Front On The Diurnal Heat Budget In An Upwelling Bay, April P. Thibodeau, Ryan K. Walter, Piero L.F. Mazzini, Thomas P. Connolly, Christopher A. Edwards, Ian C. Robbins
Physics
Coastal embayments in nearshore upwelling systems (“upwelling bays”) play a disproportionately large role in regional oceanography. In these systems, local diurnal wind forcing and thermal gradients associated with an upwelling shadow front that forms between warmer sheltered waters inside the bay and colder recently upwelled waters outside the bay strongly influence local temperature dynamics. Despite their importance to local ecosystems, there are no long-term studies that assess the heat budget inside upwelling bays. In this study, we analyzed approximately two years of water temperature throughout the water column using an autonomous profiler in a small upwelling bay in central California …

Attrition Of The Midwifery Workforce: Understanding Factors Associated With Leaving The Profession, E. Brie Thumm, Amy H. Goh, Elizabeth G. Phillips, Zachary Giano
College of Health Professions Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVE: To understand why advanced practice midwives (certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives) leave the workforce.
STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN: A multi-method, multi-source investigation included secondary analysis of certification data of advanced practice midwives and a cross-sectional online survey with closed- and open-ended items. Advanced practice midwives' active certification data were used to compare self-reported demographic characteristics of advanced practice midwives who reported working in the discipline of midwifery to those who did not (n = 9704). A survey was conducted in 2022 with individuals who allowed their certification to lapse between 2017 and 2021 (n = 303) and individuals who …

Harmonizing Human Touch And Ai Precision In Customer Service, Zhenbin Ding, Yali Zhang, Jun Sun, Mark Goh, Zhaojun Yang
Information Systems Faculty Publications
Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbots offer a cost-effective solution for customer service, but often fall short in delivering personalized or complex interactions. In response, many merchants invest in AI training and explore human–AI collaboration to leverage the strengths of both automation and human touch. However, this introduces a strategic tradeoff between service quality and operational efficiency. Using a game-theoretic framework, this study examines how merchants can optimally choose service strategies with AI involvement. Our analysis reveals a critical collaboration trap. Contrary to the prevailing belief that increased collaboration consistently enhances service, consumers’ sensitivity to the identity of the service agent erodes …

What Drives Blockchain Technology Adoption? A Meta-Analysis Across Tam, Tpb, And Utaut Frameworks, Amir Rahmani, Roohollah Ahmadi, Tugrul Unsal Daim, Mehdi Zamani, Dilek Ozdemir
Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Research on blockchain adoption has expanded rapidly, with most studies conceptualizing adoption as behavioural intention. Technology adoption models, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), are commonly applied to explore blockchain technology adoption (BTA). However, empirical results from the 12 hypotheses associated with these models remain fragmented and, at times, inconsistent, with limited comprehensive quantitative integration. To address this gap, the present study performs a meta-analysis to evaluate the degree and direction of these hypotheses systematically. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, 149 quantitative …

Impact Of Climate Change On Extreme Windstorms And Implications For Structural Design In The United States, Teng Wu, Reda Snaiki, Frank Lombardo, Sihan Li, Michele Barbato, Guirong Yan, Robert J. Trapp
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Climate change impacts various extreme windstorms associated with specific meteorological phenomena in different ways. Because various windstorms contribute to the design wind speeds, this study systematically reviewed the state-of-the-art understanding of climate change effects on wind events that collectively contribute to structural wind design in North America, particularly the US, including extratropical cyclones (as well as nor'easters), tropical cyclones, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. For each windstorm type, the general evidence of climate change impacts on storm activities (e.g., occurrence frequency and intensity) are summarized, followed by the introduction of existing simulation frameworks for yearly (or subyearly) maximum storm winds under changing …
When Does Emigration Reduce Domestic Economic Activities? Evidence On The Loss Of Management Capacity From A Visa Lottery, Marup Hossain, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
When Does Emigration Reduce Domestic Economic Activities? Evidence On The Loss Of Management Capacity From A Visa Lottery, Marup Hossain, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Economic development is often conceived as structural transformation and migration out of rural agriculture (Lewis, 1954; Fei & Ranis, 1964). Understanding development therefore requires us to identify how rural economies transform in response to emigration. We study how international migration reshapes domestic economic activity in origin households using a randomized visa lottery that gave Bangladeshi men job opportunities in Malaysia. Winning the lottery raises total household income through remittances, but income earned in Bangladesh declines due to contractions in nonfarm business activity. In contrast, crop income remains stable despite large reductions in agricultural input expenditures, because farming gets delegated through …
Deemed Acceptance, Not Deemed Consent: Nonvoting Stakeholders And A Uniform Conspicuousness Standard For Opt-Out Third-Party Releases, Zach Cavagnaro
Deemed Acceptance, Not Deemed Consent: Nonvoting Stakeholders And A Uniform Conspicuousness Standard For Opt-Out Third-Party Releases, Zach Cavagnaro
Student Scholarship
After Harrington v. Purdue Pharma, the fight over third-party opt-out releases has shifted from whether consent is necessary to what consent means. The Supreme Court held that the Bankruptcy Code does not authorize non-consensual nondebtor releases outside 11 U.S.C § 524(g), and—critically—left out what exactly counts as consent. The fight over consent is expected to command a lot of litigation, so a simple, uniform conspicuousness standard for nonvoting stakeholders’ opt-out releases can help alleviate litigation costs and focus on the definition of consent. This Comment argues that courts should evaluate consent through a unified, contract-law-grounded conspicuousness standard calibrated to the …

Not A Pretty Picture: Race, Gender, And Inequality In The Legal Profession And Legal Education, Tanina Rostain
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Responding to renewed interest in law school as a path to a career “to do well and do good,” this essay examines Nelson, Dinovitzer, Garth, Sterling, Wilkins, Dawe, and Michelson’s The Making of Lawyers’ Careers and its account of inequality and opportunity in the American legal profession. Based on a 20-year study of more than 2,000 lawyers, the book traces how credentials, race, gender, class, and law school selectivity profoundly shape career trajectories. The essay situates those findings within the divide in private practice between corporate practice and people law and interrogates the professional ideology—rooted in the lawyer’s traditional role …

Introduction: Access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) varies across racial and ethnic groups. As the largest payer for MOUD, Medicaid has potential to ensure access for all enrollees. We aimed to quantify recent trends and state variation in MOUD use by race and ethnicity in Medicaid. Methods: Using a distributed research network, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 11 states' Medicaid data from 2016 to 2020. Among enrollees diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD), we measured the percent receiving MOUD (overall; and methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, separately), continuity of MOUD for ≥180 days, and claims-based overdose event rates. We …
