Supporting Graduate Student Flourishing: Development Of A Whole-Person Framework Through A University-Wide Task Force, Elisa Greene, Amanda Grieme-Bradley, Maren Bishop

Posters

How do whole persons form for lives of character and flourishing within graduate schooling years? What steps could an institution take to move toward that end? This work describes the process of one institution’s use of a task force examining these questions using a combination of literature review and structured interviews with key stakeholders across campus. The context of the institution’s unique mission, vision, and virtue framework provided a foundation out of which four areas of focus emerged: 1) infrastructure and representation, 2) belonging and community, 3) communication, and 4) professional identity formation. Investment in these institutional themes supports formation …

Terahertz Electromagnetic Effects And Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity In Dna, F. Matthew Mihelic Md Aug 2026

Terahertz Electromagnetic Effects And Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity In Dna, F. Matthew Mihelic Md

Faculty Publications

The effects of terahertz electromagnetic stimulation of the DNA molecule can be understood through modeling of the quantum logical mechanics of the DNA molecule.  Coherent conduction of electron spin states along the aromatic nucleotide base pairs and chirality-induced spin selectivity are two characteristics of the DNA molecule that are involved in the precise separation of the double-stranded DNA molecule at a specific location.  Such modeling can inform predictions of DNA strand separation and has significant implications for understanding DNA transcription bubble formation.

Emergency Reinfusion Of Vaginally Salvaged Red Cells After Vacuum-Assisted Vaginal Delivery In A Jehovah's Witness: A Case Report, William Hughes Aug 2026

Emergency Reinfusion Of Vaginally Salvaged Red Cells After Vacuum-Assisted Vaginal Delivery In A Jehovah's Witness: A Case Report, William Hughes

Peninsula Medical School

Perinatal blood management is critical for all obstetric patients as peripartum haemorrhage is common, unpredictable, and consequences can be severe. Patients who do not consent to allogeneic transfusion of blood products introduce additional complexity and are at greater risk of morbidity and mortality. There is growing evidence that reinfusion of autologous blood salvaged from vaginal deliveries is safe and can be lifesaving. Delivering this potentially lifesaving care requires that staff well trained in intraoperative cell salvage are always resident on the delivery suite, and that the delivery suite multidisciplinary team is familiar with the procedure. Here we present a case …

Strings Attached: Science Regulation By Science Funders, Nicholson W. Price Ii

Reviews

Who regulates the physical and informational risks of scientific research? Who makes sure that researchers keep intensely personal data secret, or lock their dangerous chemicals away safely, or don't haphazardly create superviruses that could kill us all? You could be forgiven for assuming it was, well, a regulator—OSHA or the CDC or some similar entity that can promulgate binding rules and enforce them. But as Doni Bloomfield shows in the fascinating How Science Grantmakers Govern, you’d be (mostly) wrong. Instead, a key substantive and procedural regulator of the risky business of scientific research is, in fact, the funder of that …

Perceived Trustworthiness As A Pathway Linking Adhd Traits To Large Language Models Dependency: Evidence From Uk And Chinese Samples, Ala Yankouskaya, Mohammad Amin Kuhail, Haibo Yang, Xiaokun Wang, Jiaojiao Chen, Tina Yunsi Ma, Sameha Alshakhsi, Guandong Xu, Raian Ali

All Works

Large language models (LLMs) create contexts in which individual differences may shape reliance on digital systems. Drawing on neurodiversity, this study examined whether perceived trustworthiness of user’s primary LLM mediates associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits and LMM dependencyinstrumental and relationship LLM dependency. Adults in the UK (n = 567) and China (n = 577) reported ADHD traits, perceived LLM trustworthiness of LLM, and both types of dependency. Across samples, higher ADHD traits were associated with lower trustworthiness, whereas greater trustworthiness was associated with greater instrumental and relationship dependency, yielding negative indirect effects. In the UK, direct ADHD-dependency associations were …

McNair Summer Research Program

In many parts of the United States, Day Laborers, people who work for a daily wage, congregate in front of home improvement stores in the hopes that the customers buying materials are also in need of labor. Day laborers, who are mostly Latino men, experience a plethora of adversities (e.g., wage theft, discrimination based on status or race, on-site injuries). However, it is also important to understand day laborers’ experiences within the current sociopolitical climate (Fernandez-Esquer et al., 2022; Ramirez, 2011; Ordoñez, 2015; Walter et al., 2004). At times the stories and humanity of these individuals outside of their labor …

The human brain has the remarkable ability to comprehend and express similar concepts in multiple languages. To understand how it does so, we examined responses of hippocampal neurons during passive listening, directed speaking, and spontaneous conversation in both English and Spanish in a small group of balanced bilinguals. We found a small number of putative "cross-language neurons," whose responses to equivalent words (e.g., "tierra" and "earth") are correlated. However, neurons' semantic tunings differed substantially by language, suggesting language-specific neural implementations. Instead, the crucial driver of translation was a preserved geometric organization of neural responses between the two languages, one that …

A Comprehensive In-Silico Pipeline For The Discovery Of Non-Toxic, Stable Antimicrobial Peptides From Databases For Targeting Multi-Drug Resistant K. Pneumoniae, Pranab D. Sharma, Abdullah A. Noman, Al Hafiz

Faculty Articles

The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae has significantly reduced the effectiveness of conventional antibiotics, highlighting the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. This study employed a comprehensive in silico pipeline to identify antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) targeting the essential DNA replication initiator protein DnaA. A total of 28,361 peptide sequences were collected from publicly available AMP databases and sequentially filtered based on peptide length, net charge, GRAVY score, instability index, antimicrobial activity, toxicity, hemolytic potential, aggregation propensity, sequence similarity and favorable amphipathic properties. Four peptides satisfied all selection criteria and were subjected to structural prediction, membrane-binding analysis, protein–DNA docking, protein–peptide docking, …

Non-Linear Semantic Navigation In Large Language Models Via Matrix Operators, John Chang Aug 2026

Non-Linear Semantic Navigation In Large Language Models Via Matrix Operators, John Chang

Defensive Publications Series

Current conversational interfaces for large language models rely on linear interactions. This linear approach restricts information retrieval and causes navigational context to be lost. Lengthy text inputs are required to refine search spaces, leading to semantic pollution. To address these limitations, a non-linear semantic navigation method is disclosed. User intent is captured through a visual query tree and mapped directly to projection matrices. Specific matrix transformations are applied to local vector regions within a high-dimensional embedding space. These operations rotate, scale, and project the semantic space to amplify specific latent dimensions without requiring lengthy text inputs. Irrelevant branches are mathematically …
