Belonging And Whole Person Formation In Graduate Education: A Conceptual Framework For Student Flourishing, Cynthia Hickman Aug 2026

Belonging And Whole Person Formation In Graduate Education: A Conceptual Framework For Student Flourishing, Cynthia Hickman

Papers

Graduate students experience substantial academic, personal, and professional demands that can negatively affect well-being and persistence. For students enrolled in professional programs, belonging may develop within two overlapping communities: the academic institution and the emerging profession. Institutional and professional belonging can provide connection, support, engagement, and opportunities for identity and professional development. This paper synthesizes literature on these two forms of belonging and proposes a conceptual framework describing their potential relationship with whole-person formation and flourishing. Whole-person formation extends graduate education beyond knowledge acquisition and professional competence to include development across interconnected dimensions of the person. Within the proposed framework, …

Through Her Lens: The Card-Based Storytelling, Daisy Elizabeth Morales-Zaragoza

McNair Summer Research Program

Women in male-dominated roles in military environments navigate complex institutional, cultural, and interpersonal barriers throughout their military careers. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of women serving in the United States Navy. We can accomplish this by examining how institutional culture, power dynamics, and traditional leadership definitions shape their service and career progression. The inquiry is grounded in Eagly’s Role Congruity Theory of Prejudice Towards Female Leaders, Crenshaw’s Intersectionality, and hooks’ ethics of active care and behavior. Utilizing a qualitative design, data were gathered through a novel, interactive card-based interview method designed to transfer agency to participants and cultivate …

From Burnout To Belonging: Reintroducing Joy Through Collaborative Library Culture Change, Jason D. Phillips, Chereeka Garner, Cindy Dancel

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Libraries are often expected to create joy for others, yet many library workers continue to experience burnout, dissatisfaction, and disconnection. This session explores how one academic library implemented a staff-led, administration-supported approach to rebuilding workplace culture through collective, low-cost, and capacity-aware strategies. Centered on the work of an internal advisory group, this model creates structured opportunities for feedback, collaboration, and shared decision-making while introducing small, intentional interventions that foster connection, recognition, and belonging. Rather than relying on individual resilience or one-time morale boosts, this approach emphasizes sustainable, iterative practices that respond to staff needs and organizational realities. Attendees will leave …

Deporting Disability, Tania Valdez

Faculty Publications

Since the enactment of the earliest migration laws in the United States, people with disabilities have been targeted for exclusion and expulsion based on stereotypes that they are either dangerous or not productive. Although some of the pejorative language regarding disability in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) has changed over time, certain statutory provisions and the very structure of the INA still allow ableism to operate broadly in immigration adjudications. This Article focuses on the subtle, but pervasive, ways that immigration law disfavors noncitizens with disabilities. In particular, this Article examines ableism in the context of removal (commonly known …

All Decisions

Court dismissed holdover petition because landlord's GCEL notice under RPL § 231-c was defective: it indicated the apartment is exempt from GCEL but failed to check the applicable exemption provision box, instead checking the nonpayment box. As predicate notices are unamendable and the defective notice hindered respondent's ability to defend, the proceeding is dismissed.

Contribution Of Indoor Air And Dust To Children’S Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure In The Faroe Islands, Melissa Woodward, Jitka Becanova, Simon Vojta, Pál Weihe, Philippe Grandjean, Rainer Lohmann Aug 2026

Contribution Of Indoor Air And Dust To Children’S Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure In The Faroe Islands, Melissa Woodward, Jitka Becanova, Simon Vojta, Pál Weihe, Philippe Grandjean, Rainer Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The people of the Faroe Islands are uniquely exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs); despite no local production of these compounds or manufacturing of consumer products, residents exhibit elevated serum concentrations of PFASs. Consumption of pilot whales, a traditional part of the Faroese diet, contributes to exposure but does not fully account for observed trends in serum, suggesting the importance of additional exposure pathways. This research assessed the significance of indoor exposure pathways through measuring air and dust concentrations of a broad scope of PFAS nonvolatile precursors, volatile neutral precursors, and legacy ionic PFASs, and determining the estimated daily …

Redefining Just Cause For Contract Termination In Fifa's Rstp: Striking A Fair Balance Between Player Rights And Club Interests In Light Of The Interim Regulatory Framework, Walid Ben Salah, Nayel Alomran, Noor Alhendi, Zouhaier Nouri

All Works

Introduction This article examines the concept of just cause for the unilateral termination of professional football employment contracts under FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP). It pays particular attention to the changes introduced by FIFA's 2025 Interim Regulatory Framework. The RSTP aims to protect contractual stability while safeguarding the rights of both players and clubs. However, the meaning and application of just cause continue to raise important legal questions. Methods The article uses a doctrinal legal approach. It examines the RSTP, the 2025 Interim Regulatory Framework, the FIFA Commentary on the RSTP, decisions of the FIFA Dispute …

Comparing Non-Invasive Survey Methods For Southern Flying Squirrels (Glaucomys Volans) At The Western Edge Of Their Range, Jay E. Winfield, Jeremy A. White

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) is a threatened species in Nebraska that occurs along the Missouri River in the southeastern corner of the state. Recently, a population was discovered in the city of Lincoln, but it is unknown whether this population represents a natural range expansion from the Missouri River population or whether it is isolated and results from a human-assisted movement. A survey of southern flying squirrels in Nebraska is needed, but surveys of this elusive species are challenging. This study investigated and compared two noninvasive survey techniques for rapid detection of flying squirrels: acoustic detectors …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections cause neuropsychiatric complications in children, but the mechanisms linking peripheral infection to brain dysfunction remain unclear. Using mouse genetics, single-cell RNA sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics, we show that GAS infections induce inflammatory transcriptional programs in microglia and brain endothelial cells (BECs), accompanied by loss of blood-brain barrier (BBB) gene expression in female mice. Spatial transcriptomic analyses reveal that GAS-responsive microglia localize near infiltrating CD4+ T cells. Several microglial chemokines induced in mice are elevated in sera from affected patients. Deletion of GM-CSF in CD4⁺ T cells partially reduces microglial chemokine gene expression, without restoring BBB …

Comparison Of Training Background And Characteristics Between Osteopathic And Allopathic Team Physicians In Professional Sports Leagues., Brandon D Rust, Ambika Singh, Matthew T Mckinley, Joseph Imler, Mackenzie Elting, Ryan Callahan, Christopher L Rennie, Leighann C Krasney

Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research

CONTEXT: Team physicians (TPs) play a critical role in professional sports, providing medical care for athletes under high-pressure conditions. These positions are highly competitive, influenced by previous affiliations, training pedigree, and institutional connections, with fellowship training increasingly essential. Although the number of osteopathic (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine [DO]) physicians in the United States has grown substantially, TPs in professional sports remain predominantly filled by allopathic (Doctor of Medicine [MD]) physicians, and the training pathways of DO TPs are not well characterized.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to compare the training and demographic characteristics of DO and MD TPs …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Studying life in the deep, rocky subseafloor involves many layers of technological and methodological challenges, and each drilling project or expedition must make a series of choices to address these challenges. We report on the workflow for sampling hard rock cores for microbiological and biogeochemical research that was developed and optimized during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 399. All steps of the workflow, including selection of the sample and its shipboard homogenization and subsampling for specific analyses, were designed to maximize the potential for interdisciplinary collaborations and syntheses of results. Furthermore, multiple strategies to minimize and detect potential microbial …

Closing The Gap In Offshore Wind Environmental Evidence Chains: A Workshop-Derived White Paper, Jiaxin Chen, Lilian Lieber, Matthew Palmer, Dan Lear, Deborah Greaves

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Offshore wind development is accelerating at a time when environmental assessment is increasingly required to support timely consenting, cumulative-effects understanding, nature recovery, regional planning, floating offshore wind deployment and public trust. The workshop underpinning this White Paper was convened in recognition that the sector's central challenge is no longer simply a lack of data, but the weak connection between data, monitoring approaches, models, uncertainty, governance and decision-making.Environmental monitoring often remains project-specific and receptor-focused, while models remain component-specific or scenario-specific. Data systems are similarly fragmented across owners, repositories, formats, access arrangements and project lifecycle stages. Yet regulators and statutory advisers require …

Prostate cancer is one of the major health concerns, with increasing incidence and persistent therapeutic resistance worldwide. Despite various available treatments (radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, cryotherapy, biological therapy, and high-intensity focused ultrasound), patients still show treatment-related side effects over many years. These challenges highlight the urgent need for novel and safe therapeutic strategies. In the present study, we repurposed five FDA-approved antifungal agents, namely natamycin (NM), terbinafine hydrochloride (TH), ketoconazole (KZ), miconazole (MZ), and clotrimazole (CZ), as they can modulate conserved cellular processes, including sterol metabolism and mitochondrial function, which are increasingly recognized as critical determinants of cancer cell …

Toward A Standard Of Identity In Ai Interaction, Brian Harber Aug 2026

Toward A Standard Of Identity In Ai Interaction, Brian Harber

Defensive Publications Series

Systems are increasingly capable of producing outputs that appear complete and actionable. These outputs are frequently evaluated as though they fully represent the processes that produced them. This paper argues that where identity is not explicit at the interaction boundary, interpretation necessarily relies on inference. Inference enables interaction but leaves residual uncertainty regarding what participated in producing that interaction.

The paper proposes identity as a structural property of interaction rather than an inferred property of behavior or presentation. It defines the interaction-boundary condition under which identity becomes relevant and examines the implications of that condition for evaluation. The contribution is …
