"In the early morning of September 20, 1564, the Spanish attacked Fort Caroline, a French stronghold on the eastern Florida coastline near present day Jacksonville. Sparing approximately 60 women and children, the Spanish transported these captives to Puerto Rico. Eventually some returned to France where a petition, penned by an anonymous hand, appealed to King Charles IX for retaliation against the Spanish. The petitioners condemned the injustice and barbarity of the Spanish, pleaded for the king to intervene, and implored the restorative French right to the Florida province."

"Registered and printed around July of 1563, this English broadside ballad is the only work attributed to the author, Robert Seall, and it focuses on Thomas Stukeley. A man steeped in controversy since birth, Stukeley (Stucley, Stukely, Stutely–scholars have collected up to 24 spellings) was rumored to be a bastard child of Henry VIII and led a long life of piracy. The ballad was a public relations move to improve Stukeley’s image after a long life of alleged piracy and his revealing plans of an Anglo-Huguenot venture to Florida to a Spanish ambassador in London."

"After his death, Jean Ribault’s account was found and purchased in 1563 by Thomas Hacket, an Englishman who used the French document for his writing over French occupation. Only a few copies of the document were issued and printed in English. In 1875 the title was changed to Histoire de l’Expedition Francaise en Florida by Paul Gaffarfel. Finally in 1875 The Whole and True Account, a reprint of the 1563 London edition was published in New York."

Rare Books Finding Aids

Thomas Dow, DDS was a dentist in Michigan who collected books on dentistry and records of dental society during the first half of the 20th century. His collection was international and, while focused on late 19th century and early 20th century works, contains some manuscripts dating to the 1600s. In the early 1960’s the University of Texas Dental Branch (UTDB) Library purchased his collection. In 2010, Dr. Dow’s collection and other historical books on dentistry were transferred to The TMC Library. See more at RB 003.

"Upon reaching safety in Mexico, Cabeza de Vaca, Castillo, and Dorantes co-authored an account of their trials and triumphs as they trudged from the shores of the Gulf of Mexico in Florida through [...] North America, before reaching the colonized New Spain on the western coast of the continent. Their account, dubbed 'Joint Report,' chronicled their eight year journey resulting from the failed Narváez expedition. No record exists of the original 'Joint Report,' save a version of the text provided by Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo, in his Historia general y natural de las Indias.

In June, 2003, the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library became the owner of the Menninger Foundation’s Library of Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis. This fine gift included their clinical library of books and journals, the historical and rare book collections, and complete runs of the Menninger publications. This is a wide-ranging rare book collection of more than 3000 titles pertaining to psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis in both adults and children. The Burbank/Fraser Collection contains over 3,600 volumes, including books, pamphlets, bound reprints, and translations. With publications ranging from a sixteenth century manuscript to the modern works of John Talbott and Charles Short, this collection documents the changing regimens for rheumatic diseases and the foundations of the modern specialty of rheumatology. With publications from over 20 countries, the collection offers innumerable opportunities for research on the history of the rheumatic diseases and the cross-cultural transference of medical information. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–75), born in Certaldo, Tuscany, is best remembered today as the Father of Italian Prose owing to the immense popularity of his Decameron (c.1349–51), a collection of one hundred short stories (written in Italian prose) that are embedded in a narrative frame of a storytelling game undertaken by seven young women and three young men who fled Florence for Friesole in hopes of escaping the Black Death. During the Renaissance (1400–1600), however, Boccaccio was best remembered for his De casibus virorum illustrium [On the Downfalls of Famous Men] (c.1360). …

At the Abbey of Saint Denis-en-France, the Benedictine monk and chronicler Guillaume de Nangis (d. 1300) wrote a Latin World Chronicle from Creation to AD 1300. The text contains an account of the reign of King Arthur of Britain that includes the celebrated Sword in the Stone Episode. This iconic scene was not traditionally part of the ‘historical’ account of King Arthur’s biography.
