The first, from Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos en las Islas y Tierrafirme del Mar Océano, provides an overview account of the Indies, and includes a brief selection on De las Indias del Norte. The chapters “De la demarcación y division de las Indias occidentales” and “De las India del Norte” promote nationalistic pride for the Spanish crown and reflect the reverence held for conquistadors, even as they show restraint and objectivity in voice. James Harrison updates his wife on the status of their fellow Friends, including one Friend who hopes that he will not lose his land while in prison. Due to their unwillingness to swear oaths, Quakers often could not conduct business with non-Friends. As a result, Quaker business and social networks were often very connected.
