The following copy of the Letter of Thomas Dudley to the Countess of Lincoln, written in March 1631, is the earliest complete printing of the text. It appeared in the New Hampshire Historical Collections, volume 4 (1834), pages 224-249. It was also issued separately in Concord, N.H., by Marsh, Capen and Lyon that same year.

Approximately three-quarters of the letter had previously appeared in 1696, in the volume published in Boston titled Massachusetts, or The First Planters, possibly compiled and edited by Joshua Scottow.

The work reprinted here, in an online electronic text edition, is Cotton’s famous farewell sermon preached at the departure of the Winthrop fleet in Southampton in 1630. Gods Promise to His Plantation (1630)—courtesy of the American Antiquarian Society—is an ideological justification for engaging in such a risky venture, a promotional tract to encourage emigration, and a typological argument for possessing the wilderness. Like Winthrop’s famous A Model of Christian Charity (1630), John Cotton’s sermon is central to the Puritan experiment in the New World.

Identified by cataloger as possibly being the miniature version of the map of Asia by Jodocus Hondius, engraved by Pieter Van Den Keere, as it appeared in Johannes Cloppenburg's edition of Gerhard Mercator's Atlas Minor, engraved in a slightly larger format than the standard Dutch pocket atlases of the time. This version of the map was first published in 1630 and appearing in editions until 1636, then not appearing in print again …

This text, a Latin poem in dactylic hexameter with an accompanying English translation in heroic verse stands as the earliest surviving work of poetry about New England and the second oldest poem whose origins can be traced directly to the British American colonies. Only two copies of the original 1625 edition are known to survive; one is held at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, and the other is housed at the British Museum. Luis Geronimo de Oré's 1619 account of the 1597 "Juanillo's Revolt" "relies heavily on the captivity narrative of Florida Franciscan mission Fray Francisco de Ávila. The only friar left alive after the revolt, the narrative takes place during Ávila's ten-month imprisonment in Florida's interior pueblo of Tulufine."

John Smith (1580-1631) made one voyage to the coast of Massachusetts and Maine in 1614, and attempted a second one the following year, only to be captured by French pirates and detained for several months near the Azores before escaping and making his way back to England. Judges tells the stories of the heroes (judges) who restore the Israelites after they have fallen. The pattern of fall and rise is the pattern of Anodos’s experiences in Phantastes.

John Fletcher (1579-1625) was a contemporary of William Shakespeare and followed him as main playwright for the King’s Men. The Faithful Shepherdess (produced in 1608, probably published in 1609) is also important for Fletcher’s definition of tragicomedy, which highlights the importance of near-death to the genre.

Cyril Tourneur (1575-1626) was an English dramatist, a contemporary of Shakespeare; Tourneur was also a soldier and politician. The Revenger’s Tragedy (1607), as its name implies, is a revenge tragedy, and comments on the battle to avenge the destruction by the giants that lead to the brothers’ deaths. Literary critics now believe that the play was written by Thomas Middleton (1580-1627).

Following his time at Oxford, Baxter held several posts in the church, including warden of St. Mary's College, Youghal, Ireland, where he probably knew Edmund Spenser. ... In 1606 Baxter published his most notable work, excerpted here, Sir Philip Sydneys Ourania, That Is, Endimions Song and Tragedie Containing All Philosophie (1606).
