Growth With New And Old Technologies, Bernardo S. C. Ribeiro
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper proposes a semi-endogenous growth theory that incorporates technology vintages and the endogenous evolution of multiple technological paradigms through innovation. It provides a characterization of both balanced growth equilibrium and transitional dynamics in an environment where new technologies continuously emerge. From a positive perspective, the model rationalizes two distinct empirical patterns. Using two centuries of US patent data, I first document that the age profile of patents has a pronounced hump shape: most contemporary patents build upon technologies that are between 50 and 100 years old. A Multisystem Presentation Of West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease: Lessons In Diagnostic Complexity, Carrine S. Kogulan, Philip Yusuf, Oluwafemi Ajibola

West Nile virus (WNV) is an uncommon but serious case of encephalitis and meningitis, often presenting with nonspecific symptoms that can mimic a wide range of infectious, metabolic, and endocrine disorders. We present the case of a 61-year-old male with multiple comorbidities who arrived with 5 days of fever, chills, profuse diarrhea, black stools, and worsening confusion. Initial evaluation in the emergency department revealed hyponatremia, transaminitis, and concern for tick-borne illness, prompting empiric doxycycline. However, the patient denied any tick bites. Given his known thyroid nodule and Burch-Wartofsky screening score of 70, he was empirically treated for thyroid storm despite …

Indolent pulmonary adenocarcinoma spectrum lesions can remain radiographically stable for years and often demonstrate little to no fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography (PET), making diagnosis and management challenging. We report the case of a 74-year-old Caucasian woman with a remote five-year smoking history and a strong family history of lung cancer who was followed for a persistent right upper lobe ground-glass pulmonary nodule. Despite gradual enlargement, PET imaging performed seven years later demonstrated no significant FDG uptake. For more than 40 years, scientists have projected future sea‐level change. Documenting how sea‐level projections have evolved is vital for tracking progress, uncertainties, and future research needs. Here, we update and analyze a database of global‐mean sea level (GMSL) projections dating from 1982 to 2025, identifying five key findings. First, GMSL projection generation has been concentrated in a small number of developed countries, with 95% of projections produced in the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, or Australia. Second, while GMSL projections for 2050 and 2100 have been published regularly since the early 1980s, only 30 of 103 studies have …

Helena Foulkes has increased her lead over incumbent Dan McKee in the race for the Democratic nomination for Rhode Island Governor. Foulkes leads in general election scenarios against prospective Republican challengers Elaine Pelino and Aaron Guckian as well as Independent Ken Block, while McKee is statistically tied with Block in general election matchups. Governor Kelly Ayotte has increased her lead in the 2026 New Hampshire gubernatorial election over presumptive Democratic nominee Cinde Warmington. Nearly all Republicans and a plurality of Independents plan to vote for Ayotte while four in five Democrats plan to vote for Warmington. Approval of Ayotte's job performance has also increased since July. Housing remains the most important problem facing New Hampshire, but the proportion of state residents who say taxes are the most important problem is at its highest point in more than two decades.

There are persistent national calls to advance evidence-based instructional practices to increase the number of students graduating with science degrees. Evolving the Culture of Biology is a program designed to improve undergraduate education by prioritizing graduate teaching assistant teaching professional development (TA-TPD). Guided by the Teacher-Centered Systemic Reform (TCSR) model, this study examined how TA TPD practitioners’ (participants) attitudes, personal factors, institutional contexts, and instructional practices shape TA-TPD reform outcomes. Using a pre-program survey and end-of-year semi-structured interviews, we gained insight into participants’ experiences as they developed and implemented reformed TA-TPD.
