Bring Me My Harp, William Vincent Walllace, Edward Fitzball Jan 1856

Bring Me My Harp, William Vincent Walllace, Edward Fitzball

Historic Sheet Music Collection

Bring me my harp, that I may wake Old chords of byegone hours: My fairy bark upon the lake, The banks of golden flow'rs; The cheerful fire that burnt so bright Upon my father's hearth, Affection's look of starry light Which beam'd upon my birth. Affection's look of starry light Which beam'd upon my birth. Aid me my harp, that I may sing The strain she lov'd to hear, Altho' from out this heart it wring At ev'ry note a tear; Those tears so sweet, oh, do not chide Nor offer joys relief, For know to calm sad mem'ry's tide, …

Captain Jinks, T Maclagan Jan 1856

Captain Jinks, T Maclagan

Historic Sheet Music Collection

1. I am Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines,

I often live beyond my means,

I sport young ladies in their teens,

To cut a swell in the army.

I teach the ladies how to dance,

how to dance, how to dance,

I teach the ladies how to dance,

For I'm their pet in the army.

I'm Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines,

I give my horse good corn and beans;

Of course its quite beyond my means,

Tho a Captain in the army.

2. I join'd my corps when twenty-one,

Of course I thought it capital fun;

When the …

Little May, R.H. Stoddard Esq., August Mignon Jan 1856

Little May, R.H. Stoddard Esq., August Mignon

Historic Sheet Music Collection

[Verse 1]

I’ve lost my little May at last!
She perished in the spring,
When earliest flow’rs began to bud,
And earliest birds to sing;
I laid her in a country grave,
A rural, soft, retreat,
A marble tablet at her head,
And violets at her feet.

[Verse 2]

I would that she was back again,
In all her childish bloom;
My joy and hope have followed her,
My heart is in the tomb!
I know that she is gone away,
I know that she is fled!
I miss her everywhere, and yet
I cannot make her dead!

[Verse 3] …

Dissent In Dred Scott V. Sandford (1856), John Mclean Jan 1856

Dissent In Dred Scott V. Sandford (1856), John Mclean

Electronic Texts in American Studies

The majority opinion written by Chief Justice Roger Taney ran over 150 pages. There were two dissenting opinions, including this one by associate justice John McLean. It draws upon a long …
