safety and your companions also preserved. I hope nothing in your experiences will ever again approach it. I am just a little distrustful. Before coming to Berkshire I passed five weeks among relatives in N.W. Pennsylvania. There I rejoiced in beautiful views – long drives and rambles, and many days on beautiful sheets of water. Heart, mind, and body, have been repressed. it is time almost I was turning home-ward, but from …

Dear Strentzels.

All goes well in camp [ some?] that [ bag?] of grapes you so kindly sent. I telegraphed for it on arriving at this place to be sent by Wells Fargo but it has not come & we leave here tomorrow. We had hoped to have been in Eureka by the middle of last month but the unknown factors so abundant in our work have pushed us so far southward we will not now be likely to go there at all. Nevertheless I have enjoyed your kindness even in this lost grape expression …

General is so interested in the collection of plants …

In camp near Belmont Nevada Aug’ 28th 1878 —

[in margin: 668]

Dear Strentzels.

I sent you a note from Austin. Thence we traveled southward down the Big Smoky Valley, crossing & recrossing it between the [Toryabet?] & Toquima ranges, the [illegible] summits of which we ascended. Thence still southward towards death valley to Lone Mountain thence Northeastward to this little [ mining?] town — From the summit of a huge volcanic table mountain in the Toquima range I observed a truly glorious spet[illegible] – a dozen Nevada “Cloud bursts” falling at once While we were cordially pelted with …
