Religious Change In The Context Of Modernity: Innovation, Restoration, And Decline, Feyza Akova, Amy Lawton, Diane Winston Sep 2026

Religious Change In The Context Of Modernity: Innovation, Restoration, And Decline, Feyza Akova, Amy Lawton, Diane Winston

Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this paper we examine how the modern conditions of the twenty-first century and the contemporary United States context shape religious change and religious life. Rather than treating modernity as a force that only weakens religion, as classical secularization accounts have largely argued (Berger 1963; Chaves 1994; Wallis and Bruce 1992), or as a context that promotes vitality primarily through pluralism and competition, as the religious economy paradigm suggests (Finke and Iannaccone 1993; Finke and Stark 1992, 2000; Iannaccone 1994), we show how it can also shape and produce broad patterns of religious change with particular attention to various characteristics …

What Matters For Bar Success: Doctrinal Performance, Coursework Exposure, And First-Time Bar Passage, Jason Scott, Rob Hunter, Andrea Pals Sep 2026

What Matters For Bar Success: Doctrinal Performance, Coursework Exposure, And First-Time Bar Passage, Jason Scott, Rob Hunter, Andrea Pals

AccessLex Institute Research

This study examines how enrollment and academic performance in doctrinal law courses relate to first-time bar passage. Drawing on a large, multi-institutional data set, we estimate the associations between doctrinal GPA, course completion, credit accumulation, and first-time bar passage using regression adjustment and doubly robust methods designed to reduce selection bias. Across all models, performance in doctrinal coursework emerges as the strongest and most consistent predictor of first-time bar passage, far outweighing the influence of credit accumulation or course completion. Although greater exposure to doctrinal and skills-based coursework is positively associated with bar passage, these effects are comparatively modest, reinforcing …

Trustworthy And Explainable Malware Threat Intelligence Through Social Media Analytics And Nature-Inspired Optimization, Feras Al-Obeidat, Muhammad Saad Rashad, Muhammad Amin, Waqas Ali, Bilal Khan, Sajid Anwar

All Works

The convergence of media analytics, Cyber threat Intelligence (CTI) and trustworthy artificial intelligence has become essential for modern cybersecurity systems operating over large-scale, heterogenous data sources. In particular, Social Media Intelligence (SOCMINT) and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) provide high-volume, real-time signals that complement structured CTI frameworks for early-stage malware and adversarial threat detection. However, integrating these unstructured and dynamic sources with Structured Threat Information Expression (STIX) remains challenging due to its hierarchical complexity, semantic redundancy, and computational overhead in resource-constrained environments. This paper proposes an explainable and optimized intelligence pipeline (BERT-STIX) that unifies SOCMINT, OSINT, and STIX-based CTI using deep …

Dustmambanet: A Hybrid Inceptionv3–State-Space Network For Robust Solar Panel Dust Detection, Kadhim Hayawi, Sakib Shahriar

All Works

To develop a robust, scalable vision-based model for automatic detection and quantification of dust accumulation on solar photovoltaic panels, overcoming limitations of existing convolutional and attention-based methods and supporting proactive maintenance. We propose DustMambaNet, a hybrid model that consists of a pretrained InceptionV3 convolutional neural network as a feature extractor and two selective state space sequence modules. The state space modules use gated depthwise convolutions to represent long-range spatial dependencies that are of linear complexity, after rearranging spatial features to form sequences. The network provides a binary classification of dust with a severity index (DSI) and a continuous one. All …

Temporal Changes In Mechanical Pin Prick Sensitivity Following High Frequency Induced Sensitisation Of Central Nociceptive Pathways: A Test Re-Test Reliability Study, Samuel Mugglestone, Giorgio Ganis, Sam W. Hughes

School of Psychology

High-frequency stimulation (HFS) is a human surrogate model of secondary hyperalgesia and a key experimental tool for understanding the mechanisms and modulation of central nociceptive pathways. An emerging area of research focuses on the role of top-down endogenous analgesic systems during secondary hyperalgesia development. However, the test-retest reliability of the early temporal changes in sensitivity are poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the between-session reliability of the early temporal dynamics and late-phase expression of HFS-induced changes in mechanical pinprick sensitivity in a heterotopic area on the forearm in 28 healthy participants across five time points relative to HFS …

Rothman Institute Papers

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) encompasses a spectrum of genetic hematologic disorders characterized by erythrocyte sickling. Patients may experience musculoskeletal manifestations, such as osteonecrosis, which may warrant consideration for total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). While prior literature suggests patients with SCD more frequently suffer complications after orthopaedic procedures, this is not well characterized for TSA.

METHODS: Adult TSA patients (older than 18 years) were identified in the 2010 to 2023 PearlDiver M170 database. Patients with SCD were matched 1:4 to patients without SCD based on age, sex, and Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI). Ninety-day postoperative complications, emergency department (ED) visits, and readmissions …

Braids On The Stranded Cellular Automata Model, Alexa Renner Sep 2026

Braids On The Stranded Cellular Automata Model, Alexa Renner

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

The Stranded Cellular Automata (SCA) model is a grid of cells such that each cell can contain 0, 1, or 2 strands, together with two cellular automata that control when and how strands turn and cross. It was developed to study patterns occurring in fiber arts. We define a notion of what it means for a braid, in the sense of an element of a braid group, to be represented by an SCA pattern, and provide several algorithms to determine when a braid has an SCA representation with certain additional properties.

Rothman Institute Papers

INTRODUCTION: Isotretinoin (ITN) is widely prescribed for severe acne in adolescents and young adults, a population where anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is commonly performed. Long-standing concerns about impaired wound healing have prompted many surgeons to delay procedures, despite limited orthopaedic-specific evidence. This retrospective case series evaluates early postoperative clinical complications in patients with documented ITN exposure undergoing ACLR.

METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed primary ACLR cases from 2015 to 2025 at a multisite orthopaedic practice with documented ITN exposure within 12 months of surgery and at least 3 months of follow-up. ITN exposure was categorized as perioperative (≤10 days), recent …

Curiosity In Tourism: A Review And Future Directions, Sten Langmann, Pieter Jan Bezemer, Eerang Park, Sangkyun Kim

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Curiosity increasingly attracts attention in tourism research. However, the field remains conceptually fragmented around what curiosity is and how it works, often pointing to related yet different understandings of the concept. Drawing on an in-depth analysis of 61 peer-reviewed articles, we aim to build a more coherent agenda for future research by answering two core questions: how has curiosity been conceptualised and studied in tourism research, and what gaps and directions emerge from the literature? The analysis reveals that curiosity has been studied in four primary ways in tourism research: an innate motivational driver, a situational mediating state, an outcome …

What Makes An Analogy Effective For Students’ Learning Of Mathematics? Conceptualising Analogy Effectiveness For Teaching Mathematics, Vesife Hatisaru, Steven Richardson

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Analogies are commonly used in mathematics teaching as a means to promote understanding of new potentially abstract concepts, by linking them to well-understood contexts. Despite strong intuition that analogies are helpful in supporting students’ learning of mathematics, there is a lack of agreement on how to objectively judge the utility or conceptual affordances of these analogies. In this paper, we aim to conceptualise how to assess the effectiveness of an analogy by employing Gentner’s structure-mapping theory to analogies and explore two teacher-made analogies (the ‘child-mother’ and the ‘machine’) for learning the formal definition of a function as illustrative examples. By …
