Providing An Escape For Inner-City Children: Creating A Federal Remedy For Educational Ills Of Poor Urban Schools, Amy J. Schmitz

Faculty Publications

Children in impoverished, urban areas attend dangerous and decrepit schools, where they receive low quality education which fails to prepare them for meaningful participation in the community. Many states, however, provide no legislative or judicial remedy for these children, who desperately need vocational and educational skills to enable them to escape from the deprivation of their urban landscape. Meanwhile, federal officials speak

Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon Jun 1994

Teaching Parallel Computing To Freshmen, Donald Johnson, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Parallelism is the future of computing and computer science and should therefore be at the heart of the CS curriculum. Instead of continuing along the evolutionary path by introducing parallel computation “top down” (first in special junior-senior level courses), we are taking a radical approach and introducing parallelism at the earliest possible stages of instruction. Specifically, we are developing a completely new freshman-level course on data structures that integrates parallel computation naturally, and retains the emphasis on laboratory instruction. This will help to steer our curriculum as expeditiously as possible toward parallel computing.

Our approach is novel in three distinct …

Using Student-Managed Interventions To Increase Homework Completion And Accuracy, Daniel E. Olympia, Susan M. Sheridan, William R. Jenson, Debra Andrews

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

We examined the effectiveness of self-managed individual and group contingency procedures in improving the completion and accuracy rates of daily mathematics homework assignments. A group of sixth-grade students having homework difficulties in mathematics were selected for the study. There was substantial improvement in the amount of homework completed over baseline for a majority of the students, whereas the results for accuracy were mixed. Students who participated in the self-management training made significant gains on standardized measures of academic achievement and curriculum-based measures of classroom performance. Parents also reported significantly fewer problems associated with homework completion following the intervention. Students who …

Issues In Primary Mathematics Education Computers: Classroom Practice And Curriculum Reform, Lorraine Kershaw, Kevin Jones, Len Sparrow Jan 1994

Issues In Primary Mathematics Education Computers: Classroom Practice And Curriculum Reform, Lorraine Kershaw, Kevin Jones, Len Sparrow

Research outputs pre 2011

The advent of an interactive multimedia approach in teaching and learning has opened up yet another horizon to be explored in search of the perceived potential of the computer in primary mathematics education. Benefits promoted have included its use as a motivational aid, the developing of content knowledge and problem solving skills of children of varying abilities, its capacity to support an integrated curriculum, and to assist children in controlling their own learning. Many have doubts about the veracity of these assertions and disagree about the types of appropriate uses of the computer. For classroom teachers, software and hardware availability, …

Effects Of Curriculum Discourse Style On Eighth Graders' Recall And Problem Solving In Earth Science, John Woodward Jan 1994

Effects Of Curriculum Discourse Style On Eighth Graders' Recall And Problem Solving In Earth Science, John Woodward

All Faculty Scholarship

This study investigated the effects of science curricula organized around topical (a collection of concepts or descriptions) and causal (superordinate principles directly related to underlying concepts) styles of discourse. The curricula were revised to control for number of concepts and amount of vocabulary, and numerous audiovisual materials (videodisc, films, and slides) were used throughout the study. This research attempted to extend prior work on discourse styles by substantially lengthening the intervention and controlling for students' background knowledge. The intervention involved 6 weeks of earth science materials. 46 eighth graders and 2 teachers participated in the study. All students were taught …

Computer Education: New Perspectives, Martyn Wild (Ed.) Jan 1994

Computer Education: New Perspectives, Martyn Wild (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Computer technologies were introduced into educational contexts over two decades ago and while there is some argument about the extent to which computers have realised their potential, they have undoubtedly had a significant impact on education. A look into any school will reveal computers being used widely by clerical staff, teachers and children.

It is clear that computers are here to stay, but it is less clear as to how effectively they are being used in the learning process. Teachers not only need to use computers but they need to use them well, and in order to do this they …

Issues In Primary Mathematics Education: Calculators: Research And Curriculum Implications, Len Sparrow, Lorraine Kershaw, Kevin Jones

Research outputs pre 2011

Calculators: Research and curriculum implications is one of a series of monographs on issues in primary mathematics education. It has been written to support initiatives in the development of student-centred learning programs at Edith Cowan University - programs designed to accommodate current views on effective adult learning strategies, as wells as the development of professional and generic (key) competencies. Irrespective of the nature of individual learning programs, students and teachers working at undergraduate and postgraduate levels will find the series useful- either as a synthesis of currently available research findings and reference material, to identify potentially significant initiatives and developments …

Telematics In Rural Education : An Investigation Of The Use Of Telematics For The Delivery Of Specialist Programmes For Students In Rural Schools, Ron Oliver, Tom Reeves Jan 1994

Telematics In Rural Education : An Investigation Of The Use Of Telematics For The Delivery Of Specialist Programmes For Students In Rural Schools, Ron Oliver, Tom Reeves

Research outputs pre 2011

Rural students face many problems that do not necessarily confront their city counterparts. Education is a process that carries strong economies of scale. It is economical in instances where resources and facilities can be shared. It is very much resource based and much of the quality of educational programmes is derived from the resources and facilities that support the teaching/learning programme. This type of scenario makes it possible for a strong distinctions to emerge in the quality of the educational programmes received by rural and metropolitan students...
