Variational Multiscale Models For Charge Transport, Guo-Wei Wei, Qiong Zheng, Zhan Chen, Kelin Xia Nov 2012

Variational Multiscale Models For Charge Transport, Guo-Wei Wei, Qiong Zheng, Zhan Chen, Kelin Xia

Zhan Chen

This work presents a few variational multiscale models for charge transport in complex physical, chemical, and biological systems and engineering devices, such as fuel cells, solar cells, battery cells, nanofluidics, transistors, and ion channels. An essential ingredient of the present models, introduced in an earlier paper [Bull. Math. Biol., 72 (2010), pp. 1562--1622], is the use of the differential geometry theory of surfaces as a natural means to geometrically separate the macroscopic domain from the microscopic domain, while dynamically coupling discrete and continuum descriptions. Our main strategy is to construct the total energy functional of a charge transport system to …

Expression Of Fused In Sarcoma Mutations In Mice Recapitulates The Neuropathology Of Fus Proteinopathies And Provides Insight Into Disease Pathogenesis, Christophe Verbeeck, Mariely Dejesus-Hernandez, Carolina Ceballos-Diaz, Jannet Kocerha, Todd Golde, Pritam Das, Rosa Rademakers, Dennis W. Dickson, Thomas Kukar

Jannet Kocerha

Background: Mutations in the gene encoding the RNA-binding protein fused in sarcoma (FUS) can cause familial and sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and rarely frontotemproal dementia (FTD). FUS accumulates in neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions (NCIs) in ALS patients with FUS mutations. FUS is also a major pathologic marker for a group of less common forms of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), which includes atypical FTLD with ubiquitinated inclusions (aFTLD-U), neuronal intermediate filament inclusion disease (NIFID) and basophilic inclusion body disease (BIBD). These diseases are now called FUS proteinopathies, because they share this disease marker. It is unknown how FUS mutations cause disease …

Heterogeneous Transport Costs And Spatial Sorting In A Model Of New Economic Geography, Corey Lang Oct 2012

Heterogeneous Transport Costs And Spatial Sorting In A Model Of New Economic Geography, Corey Lang

Corey Lang

Transportation costs are of central importance in the New Economic Geography literature, though assumptions about transportation costs continue to be simplistic. This paper begins to address these simplifications by assuming that transportation costs for manufactured goods are heterogeneous. Basic results are consistent with standard models showing dispersion of economic activity for high transport costs and eventual agglomeration as transport costs decline. However, several novel features arise too. Many unstable, dispersed equilibria exist for high average transport costs, but converge to a stable equilibrium path as transport costs decrease. Equilibrium paths smoothly transition from dispersion to agglomeration and do so at …

Foreign Language Exposure, Cultural Threat, And Opposition To Immigration, Benjamin J. Newman, Todd K. Hartman, Charles S. Taber Oct 2012

Foreign Language Exposure, Cultural Threat, And Opposition To Immigration, Benjamin J. Newman, Todd K. Hartman, Charles S. Taber

Todd K. Hartman

In the present article, we extend the notion of cultural threat posed by immigrants beyond its current conceptualization as symbolic, collective-level threats to American culture and identity. Instead, we argue that routine encounters with non-English-speaking immigrants cause many individuals to feel threatened because of real barriers to interpersonal communication and exchange. We draw upon survey and experimental data to demonstrate that local contact with immigrants who speak little to no English, as well as incidental exposure to the Spanish language, heighten feelings of cultural threat, which increases anti-immigrant sentiment and policy preferences.

Targeting Maps: An Asset-Based Approach To Geographic Targeting, Corey Lang, Christopher B. Barrett, Felix Naschold Sep 2012

Targeting Maps: An Asset-Based Approach To Geographic Targeting, Corey Lang, Christopher B. Barrett, Felix Naschold

Corey Lang

Proper targeting of policy interventions requires reasonable estimates of the benefits of the alternative options. To inform such decisions, we develop an integrated approach stemming from the small-area estimation literature that estimates the marginal returns to a range of assets across geographically defined subpopulations. We create a series of maps that can be overlaid with traditional poverty maps to identify strong candidate areas for intervention, though an efficiency/equity tradeoff sometimes exists. We apply our method using recent Ugandan data. Results are consistent with independent empirical findings and suggest asset specific transfer schemes would improve with a spatially targeted strategy.

Fundamental Sizing Implications Of Constant Or Increasing Weight Aircraft, Robert A. Mcdonald Sep 2012

Fundamental Sizing Implications Of Constant Or Increasing Weight Aircraft, Robert A. Mcdonald

Robert A. McDonald

As the energy storage capabilities of batteries and fuel cells advance, these technologies are increasingly being considered for aircraft primary propulsion. In addition to other fundamental differences from conventional systems, these concepts may have constant or even increasing mass throughout the mission. In this paper, the implications of constant or increasing mass on aircraft sizing are considered with the aim of generating insight for the design of these systems.

G00-1778 Field Windbreaks, James Brandle, Laurie Hodges Sep 2012

G00-1778 Field Windbreaks, James Brandle, Laurie Hodges

Laurie Hodges

gricultural producers face many challenges as they try to balance efficient production systems with increasing environmental demands. For these systems to be successful, they must optimize the balance between inputs and final production. Field windbreaks are one way to increase yields while at the same time reducing inputs and improving both environmental quality and production efficiency. Windbreaks reduce wind speed and alter the microclimate in sheltered areas. Field windbreaks reduce wind erosion and the damage to crops caused by wind-blown soil. They improve water use efficiency, reduce risks associated with drought, and manage blowing snow.

Field windbreaks provide positive economic …

Theravada Buddhism And Political Engagement Among The Thai-Lao Of North East Thailand: The Bun Phra Wet Ceremony, Sandra Cate Sep 2012

Theravada Buddhism And Political Engagement Among The Thai-Lao Of North East Thailand: The Bun Phra Wet Ceremony, Sandra Cate

Sandra Cate

The Thai-Lao of North East Thailand (Isan), the major ethnic group in a core area of the Red Shirt movement, have long expressed concern with the well-being of the muang – now nation-state – in which they reside. This paper explores the proposition that the moral foundations for continuing political engagement at the muang level are explicitly stated in the annual Theravada Buddhist festival, the Bun Phra Wet, celebrated in almost every Thai-Lao village. Moreover, these concerns also involve appropriate actions by the people to correct the systems in which they live.

Motivated Reasoning, Political Sophistication, And Associations Between President Obama And Islam, Todd K. Hartman, Adam J. Newmark Jul 2012

Motivated Reasoning, Political Sophistication, And Associations Between President Obama And Islam, Todd K. Hartman, Adam J. Newmark

Todd K. Hartman

Recent polls reveal that between 20% and 25% of Americans erroneously indicate that President Obama is a Muslim. In this article, we compare individuals' explicit responses on a survey about religion and politics with reaction time data from an Implicit Association Test (IAT) to investigate whether individuals truly associate Obama with Islam or are motivated reasoners who simply express negativity about the president when given the opportunity. Our results suggest that predispositions such as ideology, partisanship, and race affect how citizens feel about Obama, which in turn motivates them to accept misinformation about the president. We also find that these …
