Transforming The Managerial Class: Binary And Dialectical Thinking In Counseling, Thomas Harrison, Troyann I. Gentile, Terianne Harrison
Troyann I. Gentile
Many counselor conceptualizations of client issues as well as interventions with clients are replete with binary thinking. The subtle result can be a type of management of clients which serves to both create change on some levels and to thwart change on other levels. Clearly, this is in direct opposition to the fundamental tenets of professional counseling. Dialectical thought is defined as the "developmental movement through forms." Dialectical thought is a type of "both/and" thinking that includes binary thought as a subset of advanced systems theory. In essence, dialectical thought puts motion into the binary thought process. This article will …

Soldiers returning from deployment are presenting with a plethora of serious mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disturbances, and substance abuse issues. This paper will describe the journey of one soldier following his deployment to Iraq and the difficulties he faced during reintegration. Clinicians representing five approaches – dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), group systems theory, and motivational interviewing (MI) will provide perspectives on the development of traumatic response symptomology, as well as suggestions for understanding and treating the soldier profiled in the case study.

The purpose of this article is to provide readers an account of the challenges and opportunities presented in a multi-faceted service-learning program in Romania. Developed in 2010, this endeavor involved an exploratory visit to assess the needs of social service agencies in Romania, and partnership with an American non-profit agency providing services to at-risk children. The mission of this program was to expose students to counseling as an emerging field in a developing post-communist community. In collaboration with the National Board of Certified Counselors-International (NBCC-I) Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) program, the authors were trained as Master Trainers in order to …

Cargo Bikes As A Growth Area For Bicycle Vs. Auto Trips: Exploring The Potential For Mode Substitution Behavior, William W. Riggs
Cargo Bikes As A Growth Area For Bicycle Vs. Auto Trips: Exploring The Potential For Mode Substitution Behavior, William W. Riggs
William W. Riggs
Cargo bikes are increasing in availability in the United States. While a large body of research has continued to investigate traditional bike transportation, cargo bikes offer the potential to capture trips for those that might otherwise be made by car. To investigate this, data from a survey of cargo bike users are evaluated using descriptive and inferential statistics. The survey queried how use and travel dynamics of characteristics with the hypothesis that cargo bike ownership has the potential to contribute to mode substitution behavior. From a descriptive standpoint, 68.9% of those surveyed changed their travel behavior after purchasing a cargo …

Becoming a student means learning to interpret and construct the multiple demands for interaction in distinctive classroom events. For an increasing number of children, the preschool provides the setting for the first encounter with these complex and dynamic classroom communicative environments. This article presents an interactional analysis of preschool circle time from an ethnographic perspective. The social participation structure for conducting these events is uncovered using Green's conversational mapping system. Findings suggest that the rules and guidelines, expectations, and roles within the event change over time. The focus of learning within the event, evident in social action rules (Erickson, …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Biofield Treatment On Physical And Thermal Properties Of Casein Enzyme Hydrolysate And Casein Yeas T Peptone, Mahendra Kumar Trivedi
Mahendra Kumar Trivedi
In the present study, the influence of biofield treatment on physical and thermal properties of Casein Enzyme Hydrolysate (CEH) and Casein Yeast Peptone (CYP) were investigated. The control and treated samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), particle size and surface area analysis. The FTIR results revealed that biofield treatment has caused reduction of amide group (amide-I and amide-II) stretching vibration peak that is associated with strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding in treated CEH as compared to control. However, no significant changes were observed in FTIR spectrum of treated CYP. The …

Government Insurance, Information, And Asset Prices, Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
Danilo Lopomo Beteto Wegner
An investment decision problem is studied, in a framework where the government offers insurance against the possibility of the price of a risky asset falling drastically. The problem is considered under different informational scenarios, i.e., information quality, under which agents have to infer the state of fundamentals of the economy. Changes in information quality is shown to affect equilibrium prices despite no concomitant changes in the fundamentals, creating excess volatility. The possibility of government intervention is shown to increase equilibrium prices, which can be ordered as a function of information quality. Empirical evidence supporting the model is presented.

Redistributing Power In Mississippi: The Reversal Of Section 4 Of The Voting Rights Act, Gloria J. Billingsley, Sylvester Murray
Sylvester Murray
Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 unconstitutional, essentially defanging preclearance requirements of Section 5 and leaving racial and other previously disenfranchised minorities unprotected. Using social contract theory as the theoretical framework, empirical field study research was used to examine whether the Voting Rights Act has achieved the results in Mississippi that the Supreme Court’s decision to revoke Section 4 has assumed. Data were collected on race-specific voter registration and voting data, measures of vote discrimination, litigations and Mississippi legislative activity regarding voting rights. Findings indicate that the gap between minority and …

Erica Matheny
This paper presents new knowledge about the current status of training on the economic value of stewardship practices in the Ohio Lake Erie basin. Local decision-makers shape coastal and watershed conditions but often do not appreciate the economic, fiscal, and ecological benefits that could be gained from sound stewardship practices. This study investigated the information and training about economic benefits available in the Ohio Lake Erie basin. Training providers and technical assistance professionals helped identify key training needs and challenges to decision-maker awareness of benefits. We found relatively few organizations offering training that incorporate economic or fiscal benefits into their …

Assessing Urban Freeway Deconstruction : A Survey Of 21 Cities With Case Studies Of San Francisco And Milwaukee., Doddy Aditya Iskandar 1973-
Doddy Iskandar
This study evaluates the effect of urban freeway deconstruction on the local economy. Scholars for years debated the role of urban freeway on the local economy. Those who found a positive effect of urban freeway use national data to support their finding. However, other scholars found the effect of urban freeway on the local economy mixed. Four major questions are raised in this study: What are the key factors of the city that affect the decision to remove urban freeways? What are the similarities and differences between cities that choose to remove their urban freeways? Does freeway deconstruction bring about …
The Dynamics Of House Price Responsiveness And Locational Sorting: Evidence From Air Quality Changes, Corey Lang
The Dynamics Of House Price Responsiveness And Locational Sorting: Evidence From Air Quality Changes, Corey Lang
Corey Lang
Despite extensive use of housing data to reveal valuation of non-market goods, the process of house price adjustment remains vague. Using the restricted access American Housing Survey, a high-frequency panel of prices, turnover, and occupant characteristics, this paper examines the time path of prices and preference-based sorting in response to air quality changes caused by differential regulatory pressure from the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. The results suggest that owner-occupied units capitalize changes quickly, whereas rent prices lag behind amenity levels. The delayed but sharp rent response temporally coincides with evidence of sorting, indicating a strong link between location choices …
