Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery Nicholas
Rights, Individualism, Community: Aristotle And The Communitarian-Liberalism Debate, Jeffery Nicholas
Jeffery Nicholas
I argue that Aristotle could not be a fore-runner to liberalism, because his view of humanity is that human beings are constituted by a community and achieve self-fulfillment only as so constituted. Thus, Aristotle endorses a unique position that defends the freedom and self-development of the individual within the parameters of a social order.

Bail Agents And Bounty Hunters: Adversaries Or Allies Of The Justice System?, Brian Johnson, Greg Warchol
Bail Agents And Bounty Hunters: Adversaries Or Allies Of The Justice System?, Brian Johnson, Greg Warchol
Greg Warchol
Bounty hunters are employed by the bail industry to locate and apprehend criminal defendants who “skip” bail and, subsequently, fail to appear for court appointments. While some scholars have examined bounty hunters, this work is concerned primarily with the origins, history, and legal challenges to the industry and its practices. Popular literature on this subject has created the “myth” of the bounty hunter, but it has failed to provide an accurate portrayal of the activities these individuals perform. Through the use of field research methods, this study provides a better understanding of the role that bail agents and bounty hunters …

This article presents a complex analysis of the impact of the technology of continuous casting of steel (CCS) on the rate of the air pollutant emissions from one of the Polish steel and iron plants. The emission sources occurring in the production process have been identified and their rate has been determined. The implementation of CCS has brought about significant changes in the production cycle of the steel plant and it also has caused an increase of the production effectiveness of steel products. The calculated environment effects have shown a considerable emission decrease of all pollutants in the scale of …

Geobacter Sulfurreducens Can Grow With Oxygen As A Terminal Electron Acceptor, W. C. Lin, Maddalena V. Coppi, Derek Lovley
Derek Lovley
Geobacter sulfurreducens, previously classified as a strict anaerobe, tolerated exposure to atmospheric oxygen for at least 24 h and grew with oxygen as the sole electron acceptor at concentrations of 10% or less in the headspace. These results help explain how Geobacter species may survive in oxic subsurface environments, being poised to rapidly take advantage of the development of anoxic conditions.

The Zebrafish Iguana Locus Encodes Dzip1, A Novel Zinc Finger Protein Required For Proper Regulation Of Hedgehog Signaling, Kohshin Sekimizu, Noriyuki Nishioka, Hiroshi Sasaki, Hiroyuki Takeda, Rolf O. Karlstrom, Atsushi Kawakami
Rolf O Karlstrom
Members of the Hedgehog (Hh) family of intercellular signaling molecules play crucial roles in animal development. Aberrant regulation of Hh signaling in humans causes developmental defects, and leads to various genetic disorders and cancers. We have characterized a novel regulator of Hh signaling through the analysis of the zebrafish midline mutant iguana (igu). Mutations in igu lead to reduced expression of Hh target genes in the ventral neural tube, similar to the phenotype seen in zebrafish mutants known to affect Hh signaling. Contradictory at first sight, igu mutations lead to expanded Hh target gene expression in somites. Genetic and pharmacological …

This research aims to prove that sound economic policies are nothing more that basic conditions for the foreign public debt problem. In fact, by studying the factors of public debt issues in Peru, Latin America and the emerging economies it’s clear that some implicit economic and non-economic factors have to be considered because of the social complexity and variable characteristics in emerging economies. This causes failures in economic policies assumptions, inefficiencies, distorted causality and nonrational behavior. This paper proposes, first, to perform a deep and comparative analysis of the foreign debt determinants in emerging economies, then, to allocate financial resources, …

Prediction Of Dopant Ionization Energies In Silicon: The Importance Of Strain, A. Rockett, Duane D. Johnson, S. V. Khare, B. R. Tuttle

Based on a hydrogenic state and strain changes upon defect charging, we propose a simple, parameter-free model that agrees well with the observed group III and V monovalent-impurity ionization energies in Si, revealing the importance of such strain effects. Changes in lattice strain upon defect charging are obtained via superposition and elasticity theory using atomic relaxations from density functional theory.

Magnetic And Transport Properties Of The V2– Vi3 Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Sb2_Xmnxte3, Jeffrey Dyck, P. Svanda, P. Lostak, J. Horak, W. Chen, C. Uher
Jeffrey Dyck
We have measured electrical and magnetic properties of single crystals of Sb2_xMnxTe3 with x =0 – 0.045 at temperatures of 2 K to 300 K. Hall effect measurements indicate that each manganese atom donates approximately one hole to the valence band. The magnetic susceptibility is paramagnetic down to 2 K, and both Curie–Weiss and Brillouin analyses show that manganese substitutes for Sb and takes the Mn2+ state with S=5/2. Contrary to the case of III–V host matrices, manganese does not stimulate ferromagnetic order in the family of bulk layered V2– VI3 diluted magnetic semiconductors, at least in the range of …

Facilitating Conversations Among Web Services As Speech-Act Based Discourses, Karthikeyan Umapathy, Sandeep Purao, Vijayan Sugumaran
Karthikeyan Umapathy
Web services composition is an emerging paradigm for enabling application deployment and integration within and across organizational boundaries. A landscape of languages and techniques for web services composition has emerged and is continuously being enriched. The ability to support conversations taking place between Web Services is an important area that is not yet fully addressed by the emerging standards. We suggest an approach to derive speech-act based message structures for conversation support that can complement existing standards.
Microstructure And Interface Characteristics Of B4c, Sic And Al2o3 Reinforced Al Matrix Composites: A Comparative Study
A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb
Three aluminium metal matrix composites containing reinforcing particles of B4C, SiC and Al2O3 (0-20vol.%) were processed. The stir-casting manufacturing route followed by hot extrusion was utilized, being one of the cost-effective industrial methods. A clear interfacial reaction product/layer was found at Al-SiC interface for composites held for a relatively long processing time (>30 min). No reaction product was observed at Al-B4C and Al-Al2O3 interfaces at the resolution limit of the SEM used. On the other hand, two secondary phases (alumina and another phase containing aluminium, boron and carbon) were found in the aluminum matrix away from the interface in …

Jerry Evensky
This paper introduces Concurrent Enrollment Programs (CEPs), within the context of Syracuse University Project Advance (PA) Economics, as a way to improve economic literacy. We describe measures implemented to operate PA Economics as a high-quality CEP, as well as the National Alliance of Concurrent Education Partnerships to establish national standards. This study also contains results from administering to high school students taking PA Economics the nationally normed Test of Economic Literacy (TEL). PA students average nearly one percentage point higher than the AP/Honors Economics Group, and score considerably better than AP/Honors Economics in fundamentals and international economics. By cognitive level, …
Ica Using Spacings Estimates Of Entropy, Erik Learned-Miller, John Fisher
Ica Using Spacings Estimates Of Entropy, Erik Learned-Miller, John Fisher
Erik G Learned-Miller
This paper presents a new algorithm for the independent components analysis (ICA) problem based on an efficient entropy estimator. Like many previous methods, this algorithm directly minimizes the measure of departure from independence according to the estimated Kullback-Leibler divergence between the joint distribution and the product of the marginal distributions. We pair this approach with efficient entropy estimators from the statistics literature. In particular, the entropy estimator we use is consistent and exhibits rapid convergence. The algorithm based on this estimator is simple, computationally efficient, intuitively appealing, and outperforms other well known algorithms. In addition, the estimator’s relative insensitivity to …
Ann-Based Technique For Predicting Voltage Collapse In Power Systems, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
Ann-Based Technique For Predicting Voltage Collapse In Power Systems, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
Voltage stability problems have been one of the major concerns for electric utilities as a result of heavy loading of power system. This paper reports on an investigation on the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in voltage stability assessment using the energy function technique. A multi-layer feed-forward ANN with error back-propagation learning algorithm is proposed for calculation of Voltage Stability Margins (VSM). Extensive testing of the proposed ANN based approach indicates its validity for determination of power system voltage collapse. Simulation results on two test systems are reported in the paper.

The Relation Of Dietary Patterns To Future Survival, Health, And Cardiovascular Events In Older Adults, Paula Diehr
Paula Diehr
BACKGROUND: There have been few long-term follow-up studies of older adults who follow different dietary patterns. METHODS: We cluster-analyzed data on dietary fat, fiber, protein, carbohydrate, and calorie consumption from the U.S. Cardiovascular Health Study (mean age=73), and examined the relationship of the dietary clusters to outcomes 10 years later. RESULTS: The five clusters were named "Healthy diet" (relatively high in fiber and carbohydrate and low in fat), "Unhealthy diet" (relatively high in protein and fat, relatively low in carbohydrates and fiber); "High Calorie," "Low Calorie," and "Low 4," which was distinguished by higher alcohol consumption. The clusters were strongly …

The Camel's Nose Is In The Tent: Rules, Theories And Slippery Slopes, Mario Rizzo, Glen Whitman
Mario Rizzo
The authors provide a general theory for understanding and evaluating slippery slope arguments (SSAs) and their associated slippery slope events (SSEs). The central feature of the theory is a structure of discussion within which all arguments take place. The structure is multi-layered, consisting of decisions, rules, theories, and research programs. Each layer influences and shapes the layer beneath: rules influences decisions, theories influence the choice of rules, and research programs influence the choice of theories. In this structure, SSAs take the form of meta-arguments, as they purport to predict the future development of arguments in this structure. Evaluating such arguments requires …

Parental Influences Towards Chinese Children’S Physical Activity Participation, Patrick, W. C. Lau, Beeto W. C. Leung
Patrick W.C. Lau
This study attempted to investigate a link between parents’ physical activity and their children’s physical activity participation. Psychological factors of both parents and children were examined to determine how parental factors affected children’s corresponding constructs. Seven hundred and forty-eight children (430 girls, 318 boys) and their parents were examined. The questionnaire was designed in two parts, one for the parent and one for the children. Correlations and path analysis were conducted. Results suggested that parental experiences and attitudes towards physical activity were significantly but weakly associated with children’s physical activity involvement. In the final model, child-perceived family environment and gender …
